Chapter 598 Kidnapping (5) The Cruel Outcome
Augustus squared off against Alaric, his eyes blazing with determination.
He was shaking, barely keeping himself in check.
His fists were clenched so tight they looked ready to burst.
After a tense moment, Augustus finally let loose, swinging his fist.
In a flash, Alaric was sent sprawling to the ground by Augustus's punch.
Cassius stood nearby, struggling to keep his anger in check.
Alaric was down, and it was hard to tell how badly he was hurt.
Augustus was no ordinary guy; his strength was off the charts.
When someone with that kind of training goes all out, it's like a bomb going off. Cassius was genuinely worried Alaric might not make it.
Cecilia watched too, her emotions all over the place, from disappointment to confusion about what to do next.
As Alaric hit the ground, tears streamed down Cecilia's face.
Alaric had just had surgery and was still weak, barely able to handle Augustus's assault.
She bit her lip, her vision blurring.
In front of her, Alaric struggled to his feet, charging at Augustus again. They went at it, trading punches and kicks with wild fury.
It was intense!
Every move looked deadly, and they fought for what felt like forever.
The quiet night was shattered by the sounds of their fight and their heavy breathing.
After who knows how long, Alaric, bloodied and beaten, tried to get up.
But he eventually collapsed.
"Alaric!" Cecilia cried out.
Her heart broke seeing him like this. She had been so angry at him for not protecting her from Pierce, but now she didn't want him to die.
"Alaric!" she shouted again.
Alaric lay there, twitching, slowly turning his head. His face was a mess, and his eyes were bloodshot.
"Don't cry," Alaric whispered.
His voice was so faint it was almost impossible to hear.
Even his lips barely moved.
"Enough!" Cecilia screamed at Pierce, "What do you want? Alaric's already beaten to a pulp, what more do you want? Why don't you just kill me, kill all of us, and stop torturing us!"
Pierce's face hardened.
But he just stared at Alaric.
Alaric might have been a decent fighter, but against Augustus, he was outmatched. It was clear he wasn't faking it; every move seemed to sap his strength, but it was all brute force. He couldn't even touch Augustus, and when he did, it barely fazed him. He lacked the explosive power of a real fighter.
"What more do you want!" Cecilia screamed again.
Right now, she wanted to kill Pierce herself.
Pierce's throat bobbed, and he looked down. "I'm sorry, Cecilia."
Cecilia was stunned.
Pierce went on, "I lied to you earlier."
"What are you talking about!" Cecilia's tears wouldn't stop.
She hated feeling so weak.
"I got orders that if Alaric's identity was confirmed, then..." Pierce hesitated, looking almost regretful.Pierce wasn't supposed to feel anything.
But right now, he was a bit moved.
"Then, you must die!" Pierce said, each word like a hammer.
Cecilia's eyes went wide, her body shaking uncontrollably.
She knew Pierce wasn't kidding.
"Why!" she screamed.
Why could only one of them survive?
Pierce replied, "This is a test. From the moment Alaric joined the noble family, he had to learn to obey completely. Taking away the most important thing in his life shows his greatest loyalty to the noble family!"
"Are you insane?" Cecilia broke down.
She couldn't help but wonder: was it the same when Dominic tried to kill her back then? Was that his first test after joining the noble family?
So, in the end, she was just a pawn in their power game?
Thinking of this, she said, "Wasn't it already tested? When you fired the gun, Alaric didn't stop you. So, I'm not the most important to him, he chose the noble family!"
"No," Pierce countered. "Based on the current outcome, Alaric didn't choose the noble family. He was powerless because of his innocence, preventing him from revealing any other identity. Therefore, my earlier conclusion was incorrect."
"But at least he chose silence, which means that in his heart, he sees me as just so-so," Cecilia exclaimed, clearly agitated.
Pierce interrupted, "It's not just that. There's also the wealth of the Lockhart family. From the start, the four major families were targets for the noble families. Back then, Dominic was valued because he agreed to leverage the Lockhart Group as a condition for joining their ranks. For Alaric, the bar couldn't be set any lower. Once you die, it would be easy for Alaric to take control of the Lockhart Group."
Pierce said, "In summary, Cecilia, you must die!"
"If you kill me, will Alaric truly be loyal to the noble family? Since the four major families are all targets, if Alaric submits, doesn't he realize what they're really after?" Cecilia pressed on, desperately trying to find a glimmer of hope.
"Of course not. Alaric becoming part of the noble family is the best way to protect the Whitaker family. That's why Dominic fought so hard to get into the noble family. His ambition is substantial, but without it, the Kingsley family would likely be defeated as well. So sometimes, Dominic's ambition was pushed to the edge!"
Hearing this, Cecilia let out a sarcastic laugh. In the end, she realized she was destined to die—no matter who Alaric was, her fate was sealed.
"I thought Alaric wouldn't lose." Pierce was already gently pulling the trigger.
Cecilia's eyes fell on Alaric on the ground.
Seeing his bloody face and him lying there, barely alive, she felt lost. She didn’t know how to say goodbye to Alaric or who to blame for her impending death.
Was it just a twist of fate?
She simply gazed at Alaric, thinking that in this moment of death, her last sight was of him.
At least, this death was different from the last life.
In her past life, she was killed by the one she loved, Dominic. This time, it was different. She could accept this death.
