Chapter 114 Completely Defenseless

Daphne was silent for a moment, her brow furrowed in distress. Her emotions were a whirlwind, but finally, she conceded. "Understood," she said, her voice barely a whisper. As soon as she ended the call, she attempted to reach Charles. She dialed his number repeatedly, but each time was met with the same automated message: the line was temporarily unavailable. After much deliberation, she decided to send him a message on WhatsApp, assuring him of her safety.Upon completing this task, she recalled what Kayla had mentioned and decided to check in with Mark. When her call connected, Mark was with Charles in a secluded villa. Seeing Daphne's name flash across the screen, he turned to Charles, "Boss, Daphne's calling.""Should I answer?" Mark asked, uncertainty lacing his words."Not now," Charles responded, his eyes reflecting a depth of emotion as he lounged on the living room couch."Alright," Mark complied. They both watched as Daphne's call went unanswered and eventually ended.Seeing the missed call notification, Mark mused, "Daphne is probably just checking in. If we don't pick up, do you think she'll worry?""She won't," Charles responded, his tone cold and detached. And indeed, Daphne wasn't worried.Knowing Charles's methodical nature, she was confident he would look into things thoroughly. She hadn't sensed any danger during her abduction. He probably just didn't have a signal where he was at.Once he learned that Daphne was safe, Charles began his interrogation. In the villa's living room, apart from where he sat and Mark stood behind him, there were two men seated across from them. Both men, white as a sheet and dressed in hospital gowns, looked like the living dead.If Daphne had been there, she would have recognized them as the men she had encountered in the warehouse."Who are you and why did you kidnap Daphne?" Charles asked, his gray suit enhancing his authoritative aura as he sat cross-legged on the couch. His mere presence was enough to set hearts pounding and spines shivering. The two men trembled.Charles! That woman was really with Charles!Seeing their reluctance to speak, Mark adjusted his glasses, a smile playing on his lips, "My boss is not known for his patience. It'd be in your best interest to talk now... otherwise..."His gaze shifted to their most vulnerable spot, where Daphne had struck them. They felt a chill run down their spine and subconsciously covered up!Mark maintained his smile."I... my name's Nick," the man previously dressed in black, now in a hospital gown, began to speak.Another one piped up, "Name's Tommy Weeks.""We had no clue she was one of yours," blurted Eddie, his heart pounding with real fear. "Someone paid us to take her to the warehouse. If we'd known she was connected to you, we wouldn't have touched the job—not for all the money in the world.""Absolutely," Tommy seconded, his panic evident."You think it's okay to snatch others?" Charles's gaze turned icy. They both shivered violently. "Of course not!""Who sent you?" The chill in Charles's tone was palpable, his dark eyes exerting immense pressure. They exchanged glances, debating whether to reveal their secret or remain silent. They had awoken in excruciating pain, finding themselves here without any memory of the events that had transpired."Mark, call the cops. Tell them they can take these two away," Charles said coldy, the indifference in his words hitting like a hammer. "Make sure we gather enough evidence to hand over, aiming for the death penalty when it goes to trial."Both men were aghast.Eddie couldn't contain his panic. "Wait! We'll talk. We'll tell you everything!""It was a woman named Kayla," Tommy rushed out, fearing any hesitation might be met with dire consequences. "She paid us to grab Daphne.""Miss Baker?" Mark glanced at his boss unconsciously. When exes and currents collide. In someone else's world, that might lead to an argument, but with the boss, it meant heading straight into a life of crime."What did she want you to do with Daphne?" Charles's expression deepened.

Eddie and Tommy exchanged a glance, their expressions a mirror of their shared fear. The gravity of their situation was beginning to dawn on them, and they understood the dire consequences that could result from their actions. The atmosphere in the room grew heavier with each passing moment, the tension nearly palpable. The chilling presence of Charles seemed to solidify, his icy demeanor casting a shadow over the room.Eddie broke the silence, his voice trembling as he spoke through clenched teeth. "They wanted us to strip Daphne and... you know," he confessed, "and then record the whole thing.""Right," Tommy confirmed, his voice barely above a whisper.Mark paused, his gaze instinctively falling on his boss, Charles. The question that hung in the air was as cold as the room itself, "Did you touch her?" Charles's tone was chilling, devoid of any warmth.Mark had no doubt that if they admitted to laying a hand on Daphne, Charles would shatter their bones without a hint of mercy. "No!" They protested, their desperation evident in their profuse sweating. "We were just about to follow Miss Baker's orders when... when your wife beat both of us and... and she took us down.""You're saying the both of you couldn't take Daphne?" Mark inquired, a hint of curiosity in his voice. The two men were left speechless. Was it even a question of being outmatched? They hadn't stood a chance at all. "Daphne is pretty lethal – it’s as if she has four arms instead of two. Even four of us couldn't take her down," grumbled Johnny, who had changed his moniker more times than one could count. He was clearly spooked by Daphne's fighting prowess. The mention of her name sparked a thought in Charles's mind, taking him back to that incident where Daphne was surrounded and roughed up. He had been convinced it was all a staged fiasco, but now he wasn't so sure. It appeared to have been the real deal."Boss?" Mark whispered, pulling Charles from his reverie."Hand them over to the police, and run a background check. If there’s any dirt, any illegal activity, we submit the evidence along with them," Charles instructed, his voice devoid of emotion."Got it, boss," Mark affirmed."Mr. Lancelot, we realize our mistake. It won't happen again, please, give us another chance," the two men pleaded. "We never bullied Daphne.”“Mr. Lancelot!”Their pleas echoed in desperation, the fear palpable as they considered the weight of their potential sentences if their past deeds were unveiled."No bullying?" Charles stood, his tailored pants accentuating his long legs. "Would you have left her alone if Daphne was just an ordinary girl, defenseless?"The mere thought of Daphne in danger was enough to unsettle him, and recollections of the previous altercation resurfaced, demanding a thorough look. The two men fell silent before one blurted out defiantly, "If you're settling scores, go after the one who hired us. We were just following orders.""Don't worry, none of you are escaping this," was all Charles said.He didn’t waste another word on them. After instructing Mark to make a call, it wasn’t long before the police arrived to escort the pair away.As they were led out, Mark, with a meaningful look, informed the officer, "The boss says those who’ve done wrong should face their dues. We’ll be sure to get the rest of the evidence to you shortly."
