Chapter 62 You Only Owe Daphne
Charles felt very uncomfortable listening to these words and only said, "It was me who initiated the divorce, it has nothing to do with her."
"I just don't understand why you want to be with her," Grandfather was both angry and anxious. "What's so good about her? Didn't you break up before?"
"I misunderstood her in the past," Charles explained to him. "I thought she left because I didn't cherish her. Later, I found out that she had a terminal illness and didn't want me to suffer, so she deliberately broke up."
Grandfather was puzzled by this piece of news, leading him to begin doubting things in his mind.
"Six months ago, she called me and told me the truth, that her illness had been cured," Charles couldn't express what he felt in his heart. When it came to love, he didn't know if he truly loved Kayla or not.
When he learned about her situation, he just wanted to give her a home and let her live a carefree life. He hadn't thought much beyond that.
"Grandfather, she left me back then because of me. I can't let her down," Charles said.
"And what about Daphne?" Grandfather was furious. "Have you considered Daphne's feelings? Since the moment you chose to marry her, it is you who should be taking responsibility for your marriage."
Charles remained silent, deep in thought. He had to admit that he was very happy during the time he spent with Daphne. But he couldn't continue this marriage.
"And as for what you said about Kayla, if she says she's cured, then she's cured?" Marcus spoke with clarity. "If curing a terminal illness was that easy, your grandmother wouldn't have passed away so quickly!"
Charles paused, when he heard these words, Grandfather continued, "Throughout all of this, the only person you owe is Daphne! Even if Kayla is as you described, she made her choice. No one will wait forever."
Charles's heart was touched for a moment, his emotions were in turmoil, everything was too complicated for him.
"You're throwing away Daphne while waiting for Kayla. You will live to regret this and then you’ll realize what you’ve thrown away, by that time it will be too late, she'll already be gone," Grandfather made his words clear. "She won't wait for someone who doesn't appreciate her."
"You're not her, how would you know?" Charles blurted out unconsciously.
"Do you think that just because your father hurt your mother's heart, and he was able to win her back that you can win Daphne back the same way?" Grandfather dropped a bombshell. "If that's what you think, then I can only tell you, Daphne is not your mother, she won't take you back."
Just a simple sentence, five words, and suddenly it made Charle’s heart stop. In that moment, a strange emotion suddenly welled up within him, as if something was slipping away from him and he couldn't grasp it.
"I've said what needs to be said. If you still want to win Daphne back, don't rush into getting married after the cooling-off period," Grandfather sighed. "If Daphne becomes anxious, just use my 80th birthday banquet as an excuse to delay."
"That's not necessary," Charles refused, and Grandfather didn't try to persuade him further. Thinking that Daphne had already been taken away by Rex for quite some time, Charles stood up and said, "I'll leave now. I'll come back to visit when I have time."
"Go, go, go!" Grandfather wasn't in a good mood with him and was ready for him to leave.
Leaving the old mansion with long strides, Charles didn't let the driver accompany him and drove away in the car on his own. As soon as he left the old mansion, he dialed Mark's number, thinking about Grandfather's words.
Mark was about to go to sleep, but when he saw that it was his boss calling, he took a deep breath and answered with a smile, "Boss."
"Find out about what illness Kayla had before, I want to know everything." Charles said with a barely noticeable smile.
Mark almost thought he misheard, "Miss Baker?"
"Yes," Charles demanded, as he turned at an intersection.
"Shouldn't we let Miss Murphy look into it?" Mark suggested lazily, hoping to slack off. "Miss Murphy is much better at researching information than us."
After the evidence from the last accident came out, the boss went back and double-checked everything. All the results were true.
He still remembered his boss's complicated reaction at that time, which resembled someone who had wrongly accused another person and couldn't bring themselves to apologize, due to their pride.
"You investigate," Charles only said two words.
Daphne was capable of finding the answer in the shortest amount of time. But he knew his own character well. If the result matched Grandfather's hypothesis, he knew his first reaction would be to accuse Kayla of framing Daphne.
To avoid that from happening, he knew, it would be better to let Mark investigate. Mark reluctantly agreed, "Alright, boss."
If Daphne knew what he was thinking, she would probably respond with, "You're overthinking it. I won't help you investigate."
Meanwhile, Daphne sat in Rex's car, only speaking after they had driven a distance. "You can drop me off by the roadside. I'll take a taxi back."
"What are we going back for?" Rex drove the car, his smile shining with charm. "I haven't even introduced my friend to you yet."
Daphne raised an eyebrow. "Isn't this just an excuse you made to leave?"
"It's an excuse, but it's also a genuine one," Rex replied cheerfully, with a likable personality. "I gave you 1.4 billion from the divorce, don't you want to make that money grow?"
"Are you trying to set me up?" Daphne asked cautiously. She hadn't spent much time with Rex, but their interactions had always been pleasant.
Being pleasant was one thing, not understanding who he really was another. Although she wasn't afraid of being tricked, she still had to ask.
"Do you think I'm Charles?" Rex joked with her. "I can't set up anyone, especially not you, Daphne. Even if we don't consider my parents, just my grandfather alone would give me a good scolding if he found out I tricked you."
Daphne didn't respond, the car drove a distance before she spoke again. "I'm still not going with you today. I have some things to take care of at home."
"Don't you want to annoy Charles a little?" Rex asked.
Daphne questioned, "Annoy him with what?"
"He's using a crush to annoy you, so why don't you find some pursuers to annoy him? That would be fair," Rex said matter-of-factly.
Daphne hardly gave him response, giving him a look that clearly said, ‘childish.’
Rex didn't leave Daphne halfway. He took her directly to the race track in Ivrea City. When he arrived with her, a group of exceptionally good-looking people started teasing him.
"Rex, it's rare to see you with a woman."
"I remember someone saying they're not interested in women."
"Rex, don't you want to introduce her?"
"This is Daphne," Rex introduced her confidently and joked with them, "I heard you three have some good projects lately, how about giving me two?"
The three of them looked confused. "You're not interested in making money, why do you want projects?"
"To let Daphne try her hand at it," Rex said matter-of-factly, a smirk playing on his lips. "You guys, also know that Charles, wants to divorce Daphne. Grandfather is worried that she won't be able to look after herself, after the divorce, so he wants me to help her invest in two profitable projects."
