Chapter 211 Meeting Charles
"I'm not quite sure either." Mark concealed his slight unease, maintaining his usual calm demeanor.
Charles remained silent, his aura reaching its peak at that moment. Mark pushed his glasses, still feeling a bit nervous.
"If you want to know, I can go find out," Mark spoke up at the right moment.
Charles said nothing.
From Mark's reaction just now, he had basically confirmed that Jesse liked Daphne.
Although he had decided not to cause her trouble anymore and quietly helped her out with some difficulties, he still felt uncomfortable after hearing that someone coveted her.
Mark dared not speak again.
He thought, 'What if I said the wrong thing and stirred up trouble for myself?'
"How is Jesse's background?" Charles asked again.
"Not very clear." Mark didn't lie. "He has never mentioned it."
Although they had known each other for a long time, Jesse rarely spoke, and their conversations never touched on family matters, so Mark never asked him about it.
Charles's breath grew heavy.
After a while, he let Mark go out to busy himself, pondering the matter alone.
In the blink of an eye, two more days passed.
During these two days, Daphne had been busy with company matters. As there was nothing urgent at Murphy Group requiring her attention, she focused all her thoughts on HorizonTech Group.
One afternoon.
Jesse came to the office to talk to Daphne about business, "I've already negotiated the price with that person."
Daphne asked, "How much?"
"I wrote nine in the blank space on the check," Jesse answered honestly.
Daphne put down what she was holding, her beautiful eyes fixed on him. "What did he say?"
"He agreed and also gave me these two things," Jesse handed her a room key card and a bottle of pills, saying, "He wants me to find the right time to give you the pill and then take you to that hotel."
Daphne took a look.
It was a bottle of pills that could induce unconsciousness.
"Let's go." Daphne played with the room key card and handed back the pills to Jesse.
Jesse stood there motionless, looking at her.
Daphne raised her gaze and said, "What's wrong?"
"Ms. Murphy, did you forget what I told you last time?" Jesse was very serious, like an elder advising on life philosophies.
Daphne was puzzled as she asked, "What?"
"Don't trust men easily," Jesse placed the pill in her hand and said, "If you encounter someone with ill intentions, giving this to them will put you in danger."
"You're not someone with ill intentions." Daphne knew whom to trust and whom not to. "Investigate this pill, find out where it came from, and report it to the police after you find out."
These things were mostly used to target women.
Such dark industry chains needed to be eradicated.
Jesse agreed, "Okay."
"If you can't find anything, let Kevin help you," Daphne added, "He doesn't have much to do lately."
"Okay." Jesse usually followed Daphne's instructions.
They left the company and went out for dinner.
Daphne intended to expose this person this time. Even if she didn't delve into it before her divorce, she wouldn't tolerate it now.
Unfortunately, she ran into Charles at the hotel.
When Daphne and Jesse entered the private room, Charles happened to be walking towards them with a group of people. Upon seeing them together, he instinctively stopped.
"Mr. Lancelot, what's wrong? Did we say something wrong just now?" Someone asked a couple of questions.
Others began to get nervous, afraid of offending Charles.
Charles blocked out the surrounding noise, his eyes fixed on Daphne, who entered the private room. He didn't look away until the door closed behind them.
Last time, Daphne admitted that she and Jesse were just acting.
But this time, Jesse seemed to be genuinely pursuing her.
"Mr. Lancelot." Mark also noticed Daphne's behavior. He regained his composure and tapped his arm, saying, "We should go in."
Charles exuded a chilly aura, his eyes deep.
When he retracted his gaze, he glanced at the private room where Daphne was before and finally entered with a heavy heart to discuss matters.
Throughout the dinner, Charles hardly spoke.
The atmosphere in the private room was tense, and those who wanted to discuss business with Charles dared not speak out. They were afraid of worsening the already serious mood.
Mark acted as Charles' mouthpiece throughout the meal, responding to questions and remarks from the others.
By the end of the meal, Charles seemed absent-minded.
On the other hand, Daphne was much more at ease. Once in the private room, they ate as usual.
After all, she easily felt hungry after work.
"We should leave early later," Daphne told Jesse, stating the reason, "To prevent Charles from affecting our plans."
She didn't know if Charles would come looking for them later.
To be on the safe side, it was better to avoid any potential interference.
"Okay." Jesse agreed to everything.
Half an hour later, Jesse estimated it was time and let Daphne start acting.
The room key card the person gave Jesse was in this hotel. All they had to do was leave the private room and take the elevator to the corresponding floor.
Just as they were about to leave, Charles received a call.
When Charles saw the caller ID, his gaze darkened. He answered, "Hello."
As soon as he spoke, everyone at the table fell silent, holding their breath, sitting there without daring to make a sound.
"Mr. Lancelot, I just found out some information." a fast-paced male voice came from the other end of the phone. "It is related to Jesse and Daphne."
"Go on." Charles was as concise as ever.
"Jesse was bribed with two hundred million," the person continued, clear and crisp, "He plans to drug Daphne tonight and take her to a hotel room where four highly skilled men are waiting."
Upon hearing this, a surge of pressure enveloped Charles.
His gaze turned sharp, coldly stating, "Address and room number."
"It's at the hotel where you're having your meeting tonight, room 2309," the person on the phone replied.
When Charles intended to hang up and get up, the person on the other end added, "I'm not sure if there's surveillance in the room."
"Got it," Charles said coldly before hanging up, standing up, and heading outside.
Faced with this situation, no one dared to breathe a word.
Even if they were dissatisfied, they could only hold it in. In this circle, Charles held absolute authority, and no one wanted to offend him.
Mark watched Charles leave without a word, feeling helpless.
He had no choice but to follow them out, informing the others that something urgent had come up and they would reschedule.
The others dared not complain but agreed.
