Chapter 45 Do you think I'll believe you?
"Mrs. Lancelot just got hit on the head with a baseball bat," Mark blurted out with a serious expression, and the car noticeably slowed down, "I don't know if there's any bleeding."
Upon hearing this, Charles instinctively looked out the window. When his gaze fell on the scene across the empty space, his pupils trembled. Six baseball bats were striking Daphne at the same time, and everyone's face was filled with ferocity, as if they wanted to beat her to death.
Before his brain could process it, he blurted out, "Stop the car!"
"Okay," Mark immediately pulled over to the side of the road.
Charles hastily opened the car door and darted across the highway. Fortunately, there wasn't much traffic at that particular spot, or the situation could have been perilous. Mark, on the other hand, stayed put, not budging from his position.
As a competent personal assistant, he had to learn not to slow down his boss.
He wasn't good at fighting, so it was better for him to just stand here and wait for his boss and Mrs. Lancelot to come over.
Daphne was in the midst of a fierce fight and hadn't noticed the car not too far away. When the six baseball bats came at her together, she didn't hesitate to kick two people down and swung her own baseball bat at the same moment, causing several people to fall down.
Daphne's eyes were filled with coldness as she looked at the remaining individuals standing, and she said, "Are you joining in?"
"I...," the leader took a step back and stuttered, "Let's attack her together."
"We can't," someone said.
"This woman fights too fiercely!"
"But didn't the employer say she couldn't fight?"
"What should we do?"
The rest of the four or five people were frightened. The person who was knocked down and had a bruised and swollen face stumbled to his feet at the back, and if you looked closely, you could see the fear in their eyes.
"What do you mean, 'what should we do'? Even if we can't beat her, we have to fight!" the leader spoke quickly, "Just think about one million dollars, how long would that be enough for you to earn?"
"But we have to stay alive," someone blurted out. With this kind of fighting, they would be crippled if not dead.
"How come I didn't know Kayla had such skills?" Daphne continued to dig a pit for them, scanning everyone's faces. "Or, do you have some leverage on her?"
Everyone had a blank expression, looking at each other, clueless about how they got involved with Kayla. Just as they were about to speak up, suddenly the leader of the group caught on.
"What Kayla? We don't understand what you mean." The leader signaled to the person next to him, and they started acting. The others were quite clever and immediately caught on. One by one, they were eager to speak.
"There's no need to pretend at this point, since she already knows."
"That's right!"
"We slipped up earlier."
"That's right, Miss Baker sent us to get rid of you. Your presence only obstructs Miss Baker's way."
Daphne glanced at the group, amazed at how easily they followed along. Just as she was about to expose them, a deep and solemn voice suddenly rang out, carrying steadiness and seriousness. "It couldn't have been Kayla." Daphne paused.
The gang instinctively looked towards the source of the sound. When they saw who it was, their faces turned pale, and they stumbled over their words, "Mr... Mr. Lancelot..."
Charles still had his black suit on, the buttons on the cuffs had a touch of mystery under the streetlight. That favored face of his carried a cold aura as he focused his gaze on the leader of the group and asked, "Who are you?"
"We... we..." They stumbled over their words.
It wasn't their fault for being timid. It was just that Mr. Lancelot's presence was too, strong!
"Either I send you to jail or I dispose of you," Charles said without any emotion in his voice, "you choose."
"Miss Murphy asked us to accompany her in this act." The man in the white t-shirt who had been standing silently finally spoke up. Daphne's gaze fell on him. With one look, she recognized him as the person who had been filming in the alley with his phone earlier.
The others also woke up from their daze, and started to speak. "That's right!"
"She planned for you to come this way, so we pretend to attack her, and then accuse Miss Baker when you arrive."
"Yes."
"Please see through it, Mr. Lancelot."
At this moment, Daphne still didn't understand the purpose of these people. She thought she would be done for. But with these words, she roughly figured out the kind of person who was after her.
Suddenly, Charles's aura became heavy, and he fixed his cold gaze on Daphne, exuding strong pressure. "Why did you do that?"
"You believe what they said?" Daphne was a little surprised.
Charles pursed his lips into a straight line without saying a word. Why wouldn't he believe them? Each person held a baseball bat, and they were all skilled. Even though Daphne had previously worked as a bodyguard for the Murphy family, it didn't mean she could handle so many people. He couldn't guarantee that what he saw in the car wouldn't cause her any harm.
But in the instant, he opened the car door, Daphne had already defeated the men. As he approached, the man in the white T-shirt glanced at him, and then he heard those words. He couldn't believe this was a coincidence.
"This has nothing to do with me," Daphne disliked being accused. "I went to buy something and was blocked in that alley over there. To avoid trouble, I ran in this direction, but who knew they would catch up."
"Do you think I would believe that?" Charles's aura gradually sank.
Daphne calmly replied, "Whether you believe it or not is up to you. It has nothing to do with me."
She explained only because those people were lying. As for whether Charles believed her or not, it was his own business. In the end, it would prove who the real fool was.
"A normal person would run towards where there are more people when being cornered. Why did you run in the opposite direction, where there are fewer people?" Charles questioned, "It's at least several hundred meters from that alley to here. Did you outrun them?"
