Chapter 315 Daphne Found Out

Charles held her hand, his breath hot.

Daphne stopped moving and let him hold her, but she felt a bit uneasy. "Did you not dress warmly enough when you went out with Mark yesterday?"

Charles replied, "I did."

Daphne was puzzled. "Then why do you have a fever?"

Charles shrugged. "I don't know."

Daphne waited for the doctor. Despite Charles taking fever medicine, his temperature stayed high.

She thought about yesterday but couldn't figure out how Charles got sick.

Charles was usually healthy. Maybe his previous fevers had weakened him?

"Don't leave me, Daphne," Charles said, gripping her hand.

Daphne looked at him. "What's wrong?"

"Can you stay with me?" Charles asked, his voice slow and face pale, making him look vulnerable.

"I'm not leaving," Daphne said calmly. "Just rest and don't talk."

Charles felt awful but stayed quiet. As long as Daphne was there, he was okay.

About twenty minutes later, Benjamin knocked and came in. Seeing Charles still in bed, he asked Daphne, "When are we seeing Brian?"

"Later," Daphne said, glancing at Charles. "He's got a fever. We'll wait until he's better."

"Fever?" Benjamin looked at Charles.

He suspected Charles was faking it.

Benjamin checked Charles's forehead and body, finding he was genuinely hot.

Charles, eyes closed, sensed Benjamin's check. He had made sure his fever was real.

Benjamin asked, "Should we take him to the hospital?"

Daphne replied, "No need, I called a doctor."

Benjamin relaxed.

The doctor arrived, examined Charles, and started treatment.

While the doctor worked, Daphne and Benjamin waited in the living room.

"How did he get the fever?" Benjamin asked, feeling something was off.

"I don't know," Daphne said. "Mark is usually very careful."

"Once he's better, we need to talk to Brian," Benjamin said. "Charles's situation might be more complicated."

Daphne paused. "What do you mean?"

"I'm not sure," Benjamin said. "But since last night, Charles seems different, more mature."

"Are you saying his mental state has grown?" Daphne asked.

"Something like that," Benjamin advised. "But we need to ask Brian."

Daphne thought about it but couldn't pinpoint anything due to her limited understanding of kids' behavior.

After some thought, she called Mark.

Mark had been with Charles all day yesterday and had gone with him to see Brian. Knowing Brian, he might have whimsically given Charles a check-up.

While thinking about this, Mark answered the phone.

After a quick greeting, Daphne got to the point. "When you and Charles went to see Brian yesterday, did you just pick up a cufflink?"

Mark thought, 'Why is she asking this? Did she find out something? What should I say?'

"Yes," Mark decided to stick to Charles's story. "Why?"

"How long were you there?" Daphne asked.

"A few hours," Mark said, knowing Daphne could verify it. "When we arrived, Brian was eating. Mr. Lancelot and I joined him for a bit; then Brian took Mr. Lancelot inside. I don't know what happened after that."

Daphne asked, "You didn't go in?"

Mark replied, "Brian asked me to wait outside."

Daphne felt Brian must have done something with Charles. If it was just a cufflink, why not let Mark in? Charles's place didn't have any confidential items.

"Ms. Murphy, is there a problem?" Mark was nervous.

"Nothing," Daphne decided to ask Brian directly. "Charles has a fever. I'm trying to figure out how it happened."

A fever? Charles couldn't have caught a cold yesterday. How did he get a fever?

Wait! Mark suddenly remembered. Last night, when he called Charles, he heard water sounds. Could Charles have taken a cold bath? Given his current state, it was possible.

"How much did Charles eat at Brian's?" Benjamin suddenly asked.

Mark paused, nervous.

Close call! He almost said Charles had a bowl.

"A little," Mark quickly said, "He didn't have much of an appetite and was listless."

Benjamin's eyes narrowed. It seemed Mark's story about Charles not eating much was a lie.

Daphne noticed, too. She was silent for a moment and then asked, "Did Charles tell you to say this?"

"Huh?" Mark paused, feeling anxious.

Mark thought, 'Has Daphne figured it out?'

Daphne thought about how Charles suddenly squatted down last night, asking Benjamin not to hit him, and a guess emerged. She said to Mark, "I know Charles is your boss; even if his mental state is a bit young now, you still recognize him."

"I have a question for you. If he doesn't want you to answer, just stay silent. If I'm wrong, please tell me," Daphne added.

Mark had already given up. "Go ahead."

"Did Charles have lunch and dinner yesterday?" Daphne asked directly. "Was the last thing you told me something he instructed you to say?"

Mark was silent. Sure enough, nothing could be hidden from Daphne.

After waiting for about half a minute with no response from Mark, Daphne was certain.
