Chapter 569 Jesse Reports
The butler, Ryder Monroe, didn't recognize Jesse at all. Before he could even ask, Jesse had already introduced himself.
Ryder told him to hang tight and went inside to report.
As luck would have it, Harry and Zara were both home.
Jesse got invited in. They knew Elara had a thing for Jesse, so they were pretty nice to him.
After the servant brought some water, Harry, sitting across from Jesse, asked, "So, what brings you here?"
"Elara's marrying Willie tomorrow," Jesse blurted out.
Harry and Zara were both floored.
Zara even questioned her hearing and asked, "Are you sure she's marrying Willie?"
If she remembered right, Elara liked Jesse.
"Yeah, she told me herself," Jesse replied, looking all serious and handsome. "She's already moved in with Willie."
"Hold on, let me get this straight," Harry said, feeling a bit overwhelmed.
"She confessed to me, and I turned her down for some personal reasons," Jesse admitted, his hands tightening a bit nervously. "So, out of spite, she called Willie and said she wanted to marry him."
"Why'd you turn her down?" Harry was only focused on that.
Jesse pressed his lips together. "For some personal reasons."
"What personal reasons?" Harry pushed.
"He said they were personal, so obviously, he can't talk about them," Zara cut in, knowing this must've been a huge blow to Elara. "Why are you grilling him?"
"He turned down Elara, and I can't ask why?" Harry snapped back, clearly annoyed.
Jesse felt guilty. "I'm sorry."
Harry was at a loss for words, not sure what to say next.
"It's my fault for hurting her, but the main thing now is she can't make a rash decision to get married out of spite," Jesse took the blame. "I hope you can talk her out of it."
"She," Harry started to say.
"Don't worry, we'll talk to her when she gets back," Zara cut him off.
Harry gave Zara a look, wondering why she didn't let him speak.
Zara glanced back, signaling him to shut up.
"She's planning to marry Willie at nine tomorrow morning," Jesse added, checking the time. "You should call her and get her back now."
Zara and Harry exchanged a glance and agreed.
A moment later, Harry and Zara went upstairs, leaving Jesse alone.
Harry glanced downstairs and then quietly said to Zara, "Elara didn't take her driver's license or passport. How's she gonna get married?"
"Call and ask," Zara urged.
"She must be lying to Jesse," Harry said, holding his phone but not calling. "It's pointless to call."
"How do you know what Elara's thinking if you don't call?" Zara said bluntly. "What if she needs us to play along with something?"
Zara knew Elara's personality inside out.
Elara had secretly liked Jesse for ages; there was no way she'd just give up like that. Feelings that deep don't just vanish overnight. There had to be more to the story.
"Should I call her then?" Harry hesitated.
"Forget it," Zara saw his hesitation and pulled out her phone. "I'll do it."
Ten minutes later, Harry and Zara came back downstairs.
Jesse was on edge, his eyes glued to them.
They sat down, and Harry finally spoke, "We talked to Elara, and we agree with her decision. We support her marrying Willie."
Jesse was floored.
He opened his mouth, looking conflicted. "Willie isn't a good match."
"She doesn't care if he's a good match," Harry replied seriously. "She said if she can't have true love, she'll settle for someone suitable, and Willie fits the bill."
"Willie is not suitable," Jesse shot back quickly.
Harry and Zara exchanged a knowing look.
Jesse didn't catch on and continued, "I've looked into him. He's got a bunch of girlfriends and only knows how to have fun. He can't give Elara a happy life."
"Those are just surface-level things," Harry said calmly. "Willie grew up under our watch. He's not a bad guy, just a bit playful."
"It's normal for young people to be playful," Harry added.
"Elara wants a life partner, not just a fling," Jesse kept trying to convince them. "Are you really okay with this?"
Harry glanced at Zara and gave a firm answer, "Yes."
At that moment, Jesse started to doubt if he did the right thing.
For some reasons, Elara's parents had a slight preference for Willie.
"Mr. Thornfield," Harry changed his tone, looking serious. "Since you've already turned Elara down, I hope you won't bother her anymore. She's very emotional. If you go to her, she'll get her hopes up."
"Understood," Jesse's voice was low.
A moment later, he stood up and said goodbye to Harry and Zara.
Before leaving, Jesse added, "I hope you reconsider. Marriage isn't a game."
"Can I ask, what are these special reasons you mentioned?" Harry couldn't help but ask.
Jesse paused and stayed silent.
Seeing Jesse not answering, Harry asked again, "If it's too personal, let me ask another question. Do you like Elara?"
"She's great," Jesse finally said, not revealing his true feelings.
With that, he left.
Ten minutes later, Elara came in, sneaking around like she didn't want to be seen.
"What are you hiding for?" Harry spotted her right away and said irritably, "He's gone."
Elara sighed in relief and walked in, flopping comfortably onto the sofa.
Harry and Zara's eyes were on her.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Elara shifted, trying to look as relaxed as possible.
"If Jesse hadn't told us, we wouldn't have known you were getting married," Harry said, snorting. "Impressive, you didn't tell us about such a big thing."
