Chapter 68 Then Slap Charles Twice

"I won't accept it," blurted out Daphne.

Rex echoed her sentiment,"Neither will I."

Kayla's eyes brimmed with tears as she looked to Charles, her last hope.

But this time.

Charles didn't indulge her as he had in the past.

If Evan had been with Daphne today, he might have believed half of it.

Evan had the kind of face Daphne could fall for.

Then he would have misunderstood Daphne, leading to a heated argument and a huge mess.

"What will it take for you to accept it?" Kayla, sensing Charles's stance, took the initiative to negotiate with Daphne, "Tell me what to do, and I'll do it."

Daphne glanced at the two of them and said,"From now on, stay away from Charles forever, never show up in front of him again, and I'll forgive you."

"This..." Kayla bit her lip.

Daphne pressed,"Can't do it?"

"Then slap Charles twice," Daphne demanded,"and I'll also forgive you."

Kayla's hand hidden beneath the blanket clenched tightly, her eyes deepening with loathing for Daphne.

But even so.

She had to keep up the act,"Miss Murphy, this was my mistake, it has nothing to do with Charles..."

"I know," Daphne said, blatantly exposing the scheme,"asking you to slap him is just to remind him to manage his mistresses better."

Charles: "..."

Rex raised an eyebrow slightly.

Kayla bit her lip, her eyes red with grievance, as if she had been wronged to the extreme.

"Slap!"

She slapped herself hard, leaving five crimson fingerprints on her fair face.

She knew what she had to do to win Charles's forgiveness, and also how to make Charles despise Daphne.

"What are you doing!" Charles's pupils shrank.

"It was my impulsiveness, my selfishness that caused the mistake," Kayla reproached herself,"I can't bring myself to hit you, nor can I leave you, so I can only slap myself to appease Miss Murphy."

She knew how important Rex was to Charles, so she didn't drag him into this.

But Daphne, she wouldn't be a match for her.

"Enough," Charles said, suppressing his anger, his eyes showing irritation,"Let's put an end to this matter."

"That won't do," Rex spoke up, still in his carefree manner,"If someone can get away with framing others by just shedding some tears, apologizing, and giving themselves a slap, it's like telling certain people that making mistakes only requires a bit of crying and an apology."

"What do you suggest?" Charles's gaze was heavy.

But his look was a clear warning to Rex: don't go too far.

If Rex knew what 'too far' meant, he wouldn't be Rex of the Lancelot family.

"Make her kneel," Rex simply suggested, wanting to vent Daphne's anger,"Not for long, just half a day."

Kayla looked up.

Her heart involuntarily tightened, Charles wouldn't really make her kneel, would he?

"Rex!" Charles warned.

"Seriously, you're too biased," Rex walked over and slung an arm around Charles,"If Daphne had falsely accused Miss Baker, would you have let Daphne off so easily?"

No.

The answer came out without Charles even thinking about it.

Daphne had lost interest in watching this drama unfold. As long as Charles didn't misunderstand her, she would no longer interfere.

As for the discussion among the others, she only said one thing to Rex,"I'm going back first."

"I'll take you."

"No need," Daphne refused.

She didn't even glance at Charles and Kayla, walking out as if they were irrelevant, and her steps carried her outside.

Charles's heart tightened, and without making a decision, his feet followed Daphne.

At the door, he didn't forget to remind Rex,"Keep an eye on Kayla, I'll be out for a bit."

Rex didn't say whether he agreed or not.

When Charles caught up with Daphne, she was already out of the ward.

"Daphne!" Charles caught her arm from behind, his deep voice tinged with a hint of urgency.

Daphne stopped, looking at him indifferently,"What is it?"

"I'm sorry about today," Charles said uncomfortably, the air around him cool,"Kayla isn't usually like this, she must have been traumatized by past bullying, which made her act out."

"On what grounds are you apologizing for her?" Daphne shot back.

Charles paused.

All his words stuck in his throat, unable to come out.

Daphne wasn't in the mood for more nonsense,"Move aside."

She had been wronged, and not only did Charles not seek the truth, but he also readily believed Kayla.

But when Kayla did wrong, he didn't reprimand her; instead, he apologized to Daphne on her behalf.

Rex was right.

Charles's heart was biased, biased towards Kayla.

"Daphne."

"Let me pass."

"Can you calm down and listen to me?" Charles wasn't used to her cold detachment.

Daphne's eyes, clear-cut between black and white, looked at him.

She said nothing.

But Charles read the message she was conveying.

She was saying: When did you listen to me calmly and rationally? What was your reaction?

In that moment.

Charles's heart ached intensely.

He couldn't describe the emotion, as if a massive stone was pressing on his chest.

He pulled out his car keys, not mentioning the previous matter, and changed the subject,"I'll take you home."

"I don't need it," Daphne refused bluntly.

But Charles didn't give her a chance.

His large hand grasped her slender wrist, led her to the parking lot, and forcefully put her in the car, driving her home.

It was now past eleven-thirty at night.

Daphne was so tired she fell asleep in the passenger seat.

She didn't trust Charles with many things, but when it came to personal safety, he was trustworthy.

She usually went to bed around ten o'clock at night, and even if delayed, she would sleep by eleven at the latest. Like today, at half-past eleven and not yet washed up, she was truly exhausted.

"Daphne..." Charles drove, wanting to have a serious talk with her.

But after calling her several times, he realized she was asleep.

He slowed down the car.

Looking at the sleeping girl, Charles's heavy heart suddenly softened, and the suppressed emotions dissipated in that moment.

For a fleeting second, he even felt that continuing like this wouldn't be so bad.

The car headed towards Daphne's neighborhood.

It was nearly one in the morning when Charles finally brought Daphne to her complex. He wanted to wake her and take her upstairs, but after calling her softly and getting no response, he had to park the car and carry her up.
