Chapter 13 Divorcing for Her
He wanted to agree.
Daphne didn't want him to interfere with her divorce, but if she was being bullied, as a friend, he had to help her.
Moreover, Daphne's father asked him to come to let Charles know that Daphne had support.
"Count me in," Daphne misunderstood Evan's gaze, thinking he had a collaboration with Austin. "I'm fine with it."
"Okay," Evan agreed.
Austin's excitement grew in his eyes. After saying a few polite words, he left.
After the door closed, Daphne spoke with Evan, as rational as usual, "You can continue treating people the way you usually do, no need to pay attention to me."
"Okay," Evan didn't explain either.
That's fine.
When he meets Charles later, he won't need to be too polite.
After Austin went back, he stood outside the private room and raised his eyebrows at Charles. "They refused to join the table, didn't want to disturb their dinner."
Charles's gaze deepened. The hand in his pocket paused.
"But they agreed to gather later," Austin said meaningfully, "You didn't see how obedient Evan was to Daphne. If you didn't know, you would have thought they were a couple."
"You should get your eyesight checked," Charles replied and went back to the private room first.
"?"
He nudged Samuel's arm, "What did he mean?"
Samuel exuded a gentle aura and smiled faintly as he replied, "If you thought they were in a romantic relationship, your eyesight is the problem."
Austin clenched his fists in frustration.
Austin asked Charles and Samuel to go up first while he went to pick up Daphne and Evan.
After picking them up, he led them to the upstairs club where they could drink and have fun. It was a special entertainment area set up by the restaurant for their customers.
And behind the restaurant, the boss was none other than Austin.
"Let me introduce you to my friends, Charles Lancelot and Samuel Lowell," Austin noticed Charles cannot take his eyes off Daphne, his lips curling into a slight smile.
"This is Evan Winston from Gedser and his friend," he introduces.
Evan greets them.
Charles and Daphne lock eyes, both wishing they could drill a hole in the other's face with their gazes!
"What are you doing, Charles?" Austin teases. "You're a married man. It's not appropriate to stare at Mr. Winston's friend like that."
"The person you referred to as Mr. Winston's friend is the one on my marriage certificate," Charles responds, knowing Austin asked deliberately. "I wonder if Mr. Winston knows about this."
With a simple sentence, the atmosphere suddenly turns cold.
If there were any unclear relationship between Daphne and Evan, it has now been exposed.
"Evan knows Daffy got married," Evan says casually, sitting on the sofa and adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "But I never expected it to be Mr. Lancelot."
Daphne looks at him from the corner of her eye, almost getting goosebumps when he calls her "Daffy." What is he up to?
Evan looked at her, as if to say ‘Just helping you.’
Daphne didn’t really know how to react. Charles is also sensitive to those two words. Mr. Winston calling her that so intimately.
He has never called her that way before.
"So, it's Mrs. Lancelot," Austin suddenly says, standing up and offering his seat. "My mistake for not recognizing you. Sit here, this is your place."
"No need."
"No need."
Charles and Daphne both say in unison.
One filled with coldness and a distant rejection, the other calm and emotionless.
"What's going on with you two?" Austin enjoys the drama. "Having an argument?"
Charles shoots him a look. Austin pretends not to notice.
"You talk to them," Daphne doesn't want to say another word to Charles. "I'm going to the restroom."
"Okay," Evan lovingly agrees.
This scene provokes Charles. The silent interaction between them gives him a sense of being an outsider.
Austin plays the chatty one. "How do Mr. Winston and Daphne know each other?"
Evan hesitates.
He initially wanted to say they had known each other since childhood and their families were close, but then he remembered Daphne's request to keep her identity a secret.
For a moment, he doesn't know how to answer this question.
Charles observes Evan's reaction and interprets it as their past being unsuitable for disclosure. And what is unsuitable for disclosure, well, nothing can be known by anyone.
The atmosphere in the private room becomes somewhat heavy.
"If it's not convenient to say, then don't," Austin tries to lighten the mood, calling for drinks. "Let's have some drinks."
They continue chatting for a while, and Daphne just came back.
Her arrival became the center of attention, and everyone in the private room shifted their gaze onto her.
She didn't want to stay here for long. After clarifying things with Evan, she bid them farewell with a few words, "I'll head back first, you guys continue chatting."
"Don't be in a hurry." Austin called out to her, "Go back with Charles later."
"No."
"Stay a little longer." Evan also chimed in.
"..." She didn't say anything but still walked over.
The atmosphere in the private room suddenly became gloomy. Charles tightened his grip on the cup, his knuckles turning white. It felt like a heavy stone was crushing his chest.
"So, Daffy says you guys are getting divorced." Evan's unreadable eyes looked at Charles, "Is it true?"
"What, Mr. Winston planning to take someone else's discarded woman?" Charles blurted out with a hint of resentment.
He regretted saying those words as soon as they left his mouth.
Everyone froze.
Even Austin hadn't expected him to say such an extreme remark.
If he really wanted a divorce willingly, was it necessary to be so temperamental?
"Charles."
Daphne didn't want to bother with him, but his words hurt too much, "Does your existence revolve around looking tall?"
Charles's hand on the side froze for a moment. But when his temper flared up, how could he hold back?
"If you don't want me to say these things, then control your actions."
"Psycho." Daphne couldn't be bothered to argue with him.
She picked up the drink on the table and took a sip, genuinely angry.
As she went to pour herself a second glass, Charles's brow furrowed imperceptibly. Just as he was about to stop her, Evan's hand intercepted Daphne before him.
It was Evan.
His eyes were filled with concern for her as he persuaded, "Don't drink anymore, it's bad for your health."
Daphne obediently placed the glass on the table, but her emotions were in turmoil. She had never expected Charles to say such hurtful words.
