Chapter 613 Too Late
After more than an hour, Gavin strolled over with the documents in hand. Jesse took a quick glance and saw everything was in order.
"Daphne said not to stress about this. Just use the HorizonTech Group's official account to post a clarification later," Gavin relayed Daphne's message.
Jesse frowned. "This makes it easy for people to nitpick."
The reason for holding a press conference earlier was because the media's influence was stronger, and many issues could be clarified at that time.
Posting directly on social media made it easy for people to find faults in unconsidered issues, and they couldn't keep clarifying all the time.
"Don't overthink it," Gavin said, pulling out his phone and showing Jesse the already edited content. "Here's the prepared clarification. See if anything needs changing."
Jesse glanced at it.
The clarification truthfully explained the situation, with pictures and evidence for each matter, as well as hotel videos and recordings.
Once this is posted, he could immediately restore his reputation and avoid online harassment. As for his parents and Yasmin, they would face the backlash.
"I want to change this part," Jesse pointed to the section where he was abandoned. "Change it to say they couldn't afford to raise me and had to send me away."
Gavin was taken aback.
Jesse asked, "Is that okay?"
"It's okay, but are you sure you want to change it?" Gavin asked cautiously.
Gavin was surprised now. Before he spoke to Daphne, she had already mentioned this possibility to him. At that time, Gavin thought Daphne was overthinking, believing Jesse wouldn't make such a change. But now, he just thought Daphne was amazing.
"Yes, I'm sure," Jesse had made up his mind. He didn't care about other things, but he wanted to insist on this matter.
"Alright," Gavin agreed. "Is there anything else? If not, I'll have the staff edit it and post it directly."
"No, that's all," Jesse replied.
Gavin immediately had the content re-edited.
Half an hour later, HorizonTech Group posted the clarification. The text, along with the evidence, was enough to prove everything.
The netizens also learned from the surveillance footage that Jesse had never sexually harassed Yasmin. In just ten minutes after posting, the discussion was already very heated.
[Those who criticized Mr. Thornfield must feel awkward now!]
[I checked that streamer's previous videos; they're all just attention-seeking content.]
[HorizonTech Group is too kind, still blurring her face in the surveillance. If it were me, I'd expose her!]
[I just heard that Jesse has been single for years and only recently got back with his high school crush!]
[Really?]
[So, the rumors about him wearing clothes worth tens of thousands of dollars but not buying anything for his father are true?]
[Come on, if your parents sent you away and ignored you for over twenty years, would you care about them? Jesse's achievements are all thanks to the Murphy Family!]
For a while, the online discussion was very high. Some praised Jesse, while others criticized him for being wealthy but not caring for his parents.
Seeing those calling him unfilial, Jesse didn't care. He could clear things up by showing his monthly transfer records. But he knew that even if he posted them, some people would still say he earned so much but only gave his parents a few thousand dollars.
He couldn't stop people from cursing. If they wanted to criticize, they would do it no matter what he did.
Yasmin didn't expect things to happen so quickly, nor did she expect Jesse to post a clarification late at night. Her comment section and private messages were flooded again. Under this pressure, she directly turned off her private messages and comments.
Eugene, on the other hand, remained indifferent. He went to bed right after dinner, unaffected by the online criticism Jesse faced. Even now, with people discussing their issues, he remained unconcerned.
But Rainey, when she saw the clarification posted by HorizonTech Group, her first reaction was fear—fear of being criticized by netizens for abandoning Jesse. However, as she read the content, she was stunned. Unable to hold back her emotions, she covered her face and cried, overwhelmed by deep guilt.
After nine o'clock in the evening, Jesse received a call from Rainey. His first reaction was to ignore it; after all, the three million dollars had already severed their ties.
But this time, Rainey didn't just call once and stop. If Jesse didn't answer, she would call again. By the fourth call, he was still considering whether to pick up.
Elara saw that Jesse wanted to answer but was struggling with his emotions, so she helped him answer the call.
"Jesse," Rainey's voice was choked with sobs.
Jesse pressed his lips together and said nothing.
Elara kissed Jesse on the cheek, giving him strength.
"I'm sorry," Rainey choked, her voice full of tears and regret. "It's my fault."
Jesse's heart was pricked, but he held back his emotions. He had waited a long, long time for her sincere apology.
"I'll return the money to you. Please don't ignore me," Rainey pleaded, her regret palpable.
The clarifications from HorizonTech Group seemed to pull her back to that cold night.
Rainey had heartlessly abandoned Jesse, who was only about four years old, and after having a new family, she never cared about him.
But even though she had failed as a mother, Jesse was still trying to maintain their dignity as parents. She regretted what she had done over the years.
"Jesse, please talk to me," Rainey cried, her guilt overwhelming her. "I regret it."
"Our relationship was made clear last time," Jesse uttered, holding back his emotions. "I wish you and your family happiness and unity."
With that, Jesse hung up the phone. At that moment, he could no longer control the bitterness in his heart and hugged Elara, his eyes red.
No one didn't want to be cared for and loved by their biological parents. But Rainey's love came too late.
Elara let Jesse hold her, gently stroking his back, just quietly accompanying him.
Jesse's life had been too tough. Everyone only saw his success, but they didn't know how many nights he cried himself to sleep, how many times he endured emotional pain and despair.
