Chapter 29 Complete and Utter Garbage
She was furious.
How could there be such an annoying guy? How dare he treat her sister like this!
"By the way," Lydia was still a young girl with a strong sense of justice when it came to these matters, "did you make him leave empty-handed during the divorce? Leaving you for another woman is a kind of betrayal too."
Mr. Murphy tried to reason with Daphne, "Lydia is right."
"No," Daphne looked at their emotions and added, "We divided our assets."
"How did you divide them?"
"How much did he give you?"
Both Mr. Murphy and Lydia asked, seemingly extra curious about this question.
Daphne answered.
Just as they had discussed before, the divorce settlement included the most expensive sports car, a suburban villa, and forty percent of his post-marriage earnings.
She thought they would praise her for this result.
But...
"You don't still like him, do you?" Lydia furrowed her brows with some worry. "He let you go for such a small sum?"
"The Lancelot Group's annual net profit amounts to tens of billions of dollars. This amount is too little for you."
"..." Daphne pinched her brow, unsure how to respond to their words.
A couple of billion dollars might indeed be small compared to the Murphy Group's annual net income, but it was still a considerable amount.
"He used most of the money for investment, and I said the investment gains wouldn't be divided." Daphne explained, "Besides, I didn't give him any of mine."
Lydia tried to reach out to Daphne, but Daphne was completely bewildered.
"Daffy, you have to understand, it's him who cheated! It's his fault," Lydia grew angrier and felt a headache coming on. "You're right not to give him anything. With his despicable behavior, if you give in, he'll definitely use the money to spoil his crush."
"No! I can't let you suffer for this."
"I'll call Evan and have him teach Charles a lesson!"
Lydia was about to make the call. Daphne stopped her just in time.
"What's wrong?" Lydia didn't understand.
"This is enough. The divorce agreement has already been submitted," Daphne said calmly. "There are plenty of ways for me to make his life difficult. No need to argue about this matter any further."
Daphne paused for a moment before continuing, "Moreover, if we really consider splitting our post-marital assets, once it's discovered that I was married to him, the media might spread rumors. They might say that the Murphy Group has resorted to deceitful marriages to manage its assets. We don't need that kind of attention."
After hearing this, both Lydia and Mr. Murphy were dumbfounded.
Charles divorcing her for Kayla was a secret known only to a few close friends.
If the media were to report it, she couldn't possibly accuse Charles of cheating. Charles hadn't slept with Kayla or spent the night with her; she couldn't find any evidence of infidelity.
Even if pictures of Charles caring for Kayla were discovered, his team could spin it as them being friends. As long as there was no solid proof, public opinion would lean in their favor.
But at least for now, the matter of assets was manageable.
Billions of dollars might be a significant amount for other companies, but for the Murphy Group, it was only a small fraction of their funds.
"I'm sorry, Daffy..." Lydia realized she had acted impulsively. "I didn't consider all of this."
"No need to apologize to me. I know you care," Daphne gave her a smile and squeezed her hand. "I've let go of Charles, but what about you..."
Lydia's mischievous eyes blinked. "What about me?"
"My marriage didn't turn out well," Daphne was afraid Lydia would lose hope in marriage. "But I hope you won't be averse to it, and if you meet someone worthwhile, don't give up."
"Don't worry," Lydia comforted her.
The two sisters had a heartwarming conversation. Mr. Murphy watched this scene and felt a surge of happiness.
As long as his two daughters were well, he was willing to pay any price.
"I need to talk to Mr. Murphy about something," Daphne addressed him in front of Lydia, using a slightly unfamiliar term instead of calling him dad. "We'll talk more when you've recovered."
Lydia agreed.
Mr. Murphy also wanted to speak with Daphne.
They went to the corridor.
Mr. Murphy felt guilty in his heart, and every time he faced Daphne, he lacked confidence. "Daffy, what do you want to talk to me about?"
"Who is the current CEO of the Murphy Group?"
"Your cousin."
"Would it be convenient to give me a position as an investment advisor?" Daphne asked, her eyes filled with emotions. "And also the details of the project with the Lancelot Group."
Mr. Murphy paused.
Emotions surged in his eyes. "You... you're willing to come back to the Murphy Group?"
"Just as an employee, not as an heir," Daphne explained.
"Alright, I'll arrange it later, Daffy," Mr. Murphy said excitedly, then he asked with a bit more enthusiasm, "Other than the details of the project with the Lancelot Group, is there anything else you need?"
"Give me a list of the upcoming projects of the Murphy Group as well," Daphne always acted straightforwardly.
Just like what she said to him before, a qualified predecessor should be considered dead.
But the things he said today made her very unhappy, and she wanted to confront him in his familiar field.
"Alright," Mr. Murphy quickly agreed.
He had long wanted Daffy to come back and inherit the company.
But Daffy had no interest in being the successor, even though she had extraordinary business talent, she never joined the Murphy Group.
Now she finally came to work!!!
Daphne's emotions were very calm.
Thinking about having to go to Ivrea City to pick up the divorce certificate, she spoke up, "During this period, I will first familiarize myself with the situation. I'll formally start working once I receive the divorce certificate."
"Alright," Mr. Murphy agreed wholeheartedly. "You can go whenever you want."
Daphne made a sound of acknowledgement.
In the following days, Charles did not contact Daphne, as he was busy with negotiations, while Daphne was busy investigating Lydia's accident.
In the blink of an eye, seven days had passed.
After a comprehensive examination, Lydia was confirmed to have no lingering effects and was discharged from the hospital. Luckily, her arm fracture was not severe, and after a few days of rest after being discharged, it had healed.
If it were a serious injury, it would have taken at least a month to recover.
As for the injury on her head, it was just a scary-looking bleeding wound. With the excellent medical skills of Kevin's sister, it was healing relatively quickly, although the wound on her forehead still needed to be changed daily.
Mr. Murphy personally picked her up and brought her back. Lydia sat in the car feeling a bit down.
"Daffy is investigating the accident you had," Mr. Murphy explained to her, knowing the reason for her unhappiness, "She submitted all the evidence to the police a few days ago, and we're waiting for the prosecutor's office.
"After the investigation, she will be transferred to the court for prosecution," Mr. Murphy said.
"Do you know who it is?" Lydia suddenly perked up.
