Chapter 578 Did You Really Agree to Let Him Stay?
"What are you still doing here?" Richard's eyes landed on Brian, who was grinning like a fool. His voice was lazy but had a hint of annoyance. "Get out."
"I got nowhere to go," Brian said, looking all pitiful.
"Not my problem," Richard shot back, not caring at all.
"How is it not your problem? What if I end up sleeping on the street and get hit by a car? You wanna hold my dead body and regret it?" Brian said, trying to sound serious.
Richard thought Brian was being way too dramatic.
"Just let me stay. You got so many bedrooms anyway," Brian kept pushing. "One more person won't make a difference."
"Get out," Richard repeated.
Brian flopped down on the sofa, making it clear that if Richard wanted him out, he'd have to drag him out himself.
"Richard, why not just let him stay?" Elara chimed in, feeling like she should help Brian out. "It'll be more fun with another person around."
Brian jumped on that. "Yeah, exactly!"
Richard turned to Elara. "Do you want me to tell your parents about how you used to sneak back to the country because of a certain someone you had a crush on?"
Elara wasn't thrilled. Her relationship with Richard had always been polite and strictly family. But ever since Richard found out about her secret crush, they'd become a bit more like friends.
"Who did you have a crush on?" Brian asked, curious.
Elara didn't want to get into it. "Just an old classmate."
"Do you still like him? If you do, I can help you get him," Brian offered. "I guarantee you'll win him over in no time."
Elara's eyes flickered, but she politely declined. "No need."
She turned to Richard. "Richard, can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead," Richard replied.
Elara continued, "What's the deal between you two?"
"Nothing," Richard said quickly. "We just knew each other once."
Elara pressed on. "Do you have any beef with him?"
"No," Richard said, wanting nothing to do with Brian.
"So, he's not special to you," Elara said slowly, her eyes serious. "If he's not special, why do you treat him differently than others?"
Brian's eyes also turned to Richard.
Richard frowned a bit, his usually indifferent eyes meeting Brian's.
Their eyes locked, and something seemed to pass between them.
"Since you know Brian and there's no beef, why not let him stay?" Elara asked, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "At least I'll have someone to hang out with when I'm bored."
Richard was thinking.
Elara kept going, "You don't talk to me much, and I'm worried I'll start overthinking if I'm alone too long."
"Overthink what?" Richard asked.
"Honestly, I came here to change my surroundings and my mood," Elara said seriously. "I confessed to my crush recently, but he turned me down."
After saying this, Elara felt a bit heavy-hearted.
But she didn't let the mood stay heavy and kept pushing for Brian. "Just let Brian stay. He can keep me company sometimes."
"Exactly!" Brian chimed in right away.
Richard shot him a look.
Brian immediately shut up.
"How did he reject you?" Richard asked.
"He just said he didn't have feelings for me," Elara said bluntly. "But I could tell he liked me. I just don't know why he turned me down. He wouldn't say when I asked."
"Does Daphne know?" Richard asked.
"Yeah," Elara nodded. "But she couldn't figure it out either."
Richard's eyes flickered.
If Daphne knew but couldn't figure it out, it meant the rejection wasn't work-related. Elara's heart must really be hurting.
Even though Brian was a handful, he was good at lightening the mood.
"Did you just say Daphne?" Brian's attention was piqued.
Elara was a bit surprised. "You know her too?"
"Of course," Brian said, a figure popping into his mind. "How's your heartbreak connected to her?"
"Well," Elara hesitated, not sure how to explain.
"If you want to stay, keep your mouth shut," Richard snapped at Brian, his disdain clear. "Pick a room upstairs."
Elara and Brian were both a bit shocked by the sudden change in his attitude.
"Richard, did you really agree to let him stay?" Elara asked.
"He's lively. If you feel down, talk to him. Don't keep it to yourself," Richard advised, still worried Elara would be stuck in her heartbreak.
That guy was someone she'd had a crush on for years. Richard knew too well the pain of heartbreak.
Even Richard almost didn't get through it when it came to Brian.
Elara immediately brightened up. "Thank you, Richard!"
"Go rest. I'll talk to him for a bit," Richard told her, then turned to Brian with a disdainful tone. "Come upstairs."
"Okay!" Brian said, grinning as he headed upstairs quickly.
A moment later, in the upstairs study, Brian was all smiles facing Richard. "What do you want to talk about? I'll talk about anything you like."
"Elara's a girl, and the weather's getting warmer," Richard said, thinking it through and specifically reminding Brian. "Don't run around without any clothes on."
