Chapter 25 He Has Always Cared About You
Daphne was so tired, all she wanted was to find someone who truly loved her and spend her life with them, building a happy home through their own efforts.
Even without the identity of the heir to the Murphy Group, her worth was not far off from Charles'.
Before their divorce, she had thought about how this marriage began and how it would end.
She would end it with her own identity as Daphne.
With these thoughts in mind, she still decided to tell dummy dad about this matter. If she didn't tell him, when Charles brought her to meet him tomorrow, he would surely be surprised.
"What...what?" Mr. Murphy was completely stunned, his mind momentarily unable to react. "Why did he bring you to see me?"
"He wants to test my identity," Daphne said bluntly.
In fact, this was not Charles' true intention.
His real intention was to find out if Daphne would contact Mr. Murphy after learning about this matter.
If she made the call, it meant she was telling the truth. If she didn't, it was just a joke.
After Daphne finished talking to Mr. Murphy, she saw an email in her mailbox from the sender she recognized.
[Yes, he wants you to help him check the call records of a phone number, XXXX1314. See if this number has had any contact with the CEO of the Murphy Group recently.]
"..." She couldn't express her current mood.
It was like someone running a store to poison her while asking which poison would be more effective.
Feeling rare happiness, she quickly replied: [Checked, there's nothing.]
She wasn't afraid even if Charles asked other hackers to check.
Her phone number and other contact information were encrypted, so it was impossible to find them through illegal means.
After seeing the email, Charles made a phone call and the result was also negative.
This made his thoughts grow deeper.
**The next afternoon.**
Daphne was still at the hospital chatting with Lydia, listening to her talk about interesting things that had happened in the past two years.
As they chatted, the topic shifted to Charles.
"Daffy, there's something I haven't told you."
"What is it?"
"About Charles."
"?"
Daphne finally perked up a bit, a bad feeling rising in her heart.
Lydia looked guilty under her gaze, biting her lip as she slowly said, "This morning, I had a conversation with my father. When I found out Charles was bringing you to meet him, I begged him to arrange the meeting here."
"???"
She genuinely started to doubt her life, "Are you serious?"
"I just wanted to see what he's like in reality," Lydia knew she had done wrong, but her curiosity got the better of her. "After all, he used to be my brother-in-law."
Daphne fell silent.
This person really knows how to cause trouble for her.
"Daffy?"
"Do you know how to act?" Daphne didn't blame her.
Lydia was caught off guard, but casually nodded, "Yes."
"If Charles agrees to meet here and sees me, pretend you don't know me." Daphne didn't even consider this; she genuinely feared Lydia's acting skills might give them away. "Don't make any eye contact with me either."
"Alright."
"And don't be too curious about him. He's not your brother-in-law, just a business partner of the Murphy Group."
"Okay, got it!"
"Most importantly, don't mention you have a sister. Make sure you discuss this with dummy dad beforehand, so you don't slip up."
Lydia agreed to everything.
She had heard a lot about Charles, his remarkable business acumen, and flawless decision-making in the corporate world. He was a legendary figure in their circle.
She had seen him at business banquets before, but never considered that he would be her brother-in-law.
Shortly after Daphne finished instructing Lydia, she received a call from Mark. He asked where she was, offering to pick her up, and mentioned changing the meeting location to Lydia's hospital.
Daphne couldn't run too far away for Mark to pick her up, so she said she would be waiting for him at Gedser First People's Hospital and hung up the phone.
Leaving the hospital, she exchanged some cash at a nearby convenience store.
**5:30 PM.**
Mark and Charles arrived at Gedser First People's Hospital on time and met up with Daphne.
Charles had changed into a charcoal gray suit, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist, like a walking hanger. However, his aura seemed even cooler.
"Mrs. Lancelot," Mark greeted with a slight smile.
Daphne corrected him, "Just call me Daphne."
"..."
"..."
"Is your family here in the hospital?" Charles, with his deep, penetrating eyes, scanned the surroundings and asked a crucial question.
Daphne replied, "No."
Charles's eyes grew colder as he asked, "Do you expect me to believe that?"
"Whether you believe it or not is none of my concern." Daphne retorted.
Since the incident involving Kayla, she knew that Charles had zero trust in her.
Mark didn't dare to say a word on the side. They were arguing again!!!
"Now that your family isn't in the hospital, do you need to explain why your step count is only a little over two hundred?" Charles took out his phone and opened the fitness app, exposing her without any consideration for her pride.
His aura turned colder. She recalled the fleeting figure she saw outside Lydia's hospital room when she visited Edwin yesterday.
It resembled the person in front of her.
"Before, I didn't believe it when people said that people in love have zero IQ," Daphne continued. "But now, I do."
"..."
“!"
"There's this mode of transportation called a taxi," Daphne threw in a few words.
Taking a taxi doesn't count as steps. Charles knew this, and so did Mark.
He glanced at his boss and couldn't help but think, once again, that his boss's brain wasn't as sharp as Mrs. Lancelot's.
Charles felt his heart sink.
Daphne's words were flawless, but she clearly didn't seem like someone who had rushed over from somewhere else.
"Boss, we should go inside," Mark spoke up, bracing himself and feeling the real pressure, "After visiting the Murphy Group's daughter, we still need to talk to Mr. Murphy."
Charles kept his inquisitive gaze on Daphne. Daphne allowed him to stare.
After a few breaths, Charles averted his gaze and started walking towards the ward. Daphne felt a bit relieved and touched the money in her pocket as she followed him.
She had purposely prepared this cash, just in case Charles asked to see the payment for the taxi. She didn't have a taxi receipt on her phone, so she could only say she took a taxi and paid with cash.
He didn't ask, so she didn't have to worry about saying too much or making a mistake.
The distance from the hospital entrance to Lydia's ward wasn't very long, but Charles intentionally slowed his pace.
He was testing Daphne, to see if she really didn't know or if she was pretending not to know.
