Chapter 519 Is Your Friendship with Lon So Fragile

Emery just hummed in response.

After telling Louis to holler if he needed anything and to make himself at home, he headed upstairs to deal with some work stuff.

Louis felt a weight lift off his shoulders after figuring out what was really going on.

Emma came back after hanging out with the kids for a bit. The whole kid scene wasn't really her jam for too long.

Seeing her come back alone, Louis immediately asked, "Where's Diana?"

"Playing with Eddy," Emma said, handing Louis a glass of water. "Where's Emery?"

"Upstairs," Louis replied.

Emma nodded.

She put down her glass and casually picked up one of Louis's books. Noticing it was all foreign lit, she raised an eyebrow.

Louis was really stepping up his game.

"Emma," Louis started, wanting to tell her something.

Emma, still flipping through his book, looked up.

"When Emery was pursuing you, did you ever act all weak in front of him?" Louis wanted to get the facts straight.

"How'd you know?" Emma looked a bit surprised, then continued. "He was pretty intense back then, and he had a whole crew with him. I couldn't get away, so I just squatted down and pretended to cry."

Yeah, people always gotta deal with the stuff they've done in the past.

"Did he tell you that?" Emma asked, curious.

"Yeah." Louis nodded.

Emma turned a page, finding the book pretty interesting. "Didn't expect he'd talk to you about that stuff. He's usually so serious."

"I asked him why he didn't want you to have kids," Louis said, cutting to the chase. "That's when he told me."

Emma paused, deep in thought.

She seemed to have figured something out. "What did he say about the kids?"

"He said you're scared of pain," Louis said bluntly. "And that you might not be able to handle it."

"And besides that?" Emma suddenly felt like she got it.

"He said when he was chasing you, you cried a lot over a small injury," Louis said, finding adult emotions too complicated. "If you cried that much over a small injury, he couldn't imagine what it would be like if you had a kid."

Emma clicked her tongue.

"I asked him if he'd let you have a kid if you weren't scared of pain," Louis said softly. "He said as long as you wanted to, it was up to you."

"Got it." Emma suddenly felt pumped. She reached out and ruffled his hair. "Thanks, sweetheart!"

With that, she went upstairs.

It turned out Emma's act of being scared of pain had stuck with Emery all these years. She always thought he knew she was faking it when he comforted her, but it seemed he hadn't caught on.

After Emma went upstairs, Louis sensibly took his book and went to the yard.

His gut told him there might be some progress with Emma and the kids today.

Half an hour later, Diana came over with Eddy.

She was about to ask Emma and Emery for permission to go out and play when Louis stopped her.

"I need to find Emma," Diana said, her voice small but piercing.

"Emma and Emery are busy right now," Louis said, sounding way too grown-up for his age. "If you wanna go out and play, take the bodyguards with you. Listen to them and don't do anything dumb."

"Okay!" Diana chirped and dashed off.

The bodyguards trailed after them.

Upstairs, Emma had Emery pinned against the wall, flashing a mischievous grin. "Don't worry about downstairs. Louis is a smart kid."

"It's daytime," Emery's voice was low and gravelly.

"Can't handle it during the day?"

Challenge accepted. Emery was about to show Emma just how much he could handle.

As Emma predicted, Louis stayed in the yard, nose deep in his book. Anytime someone came looking for them, he'd just say they were busy and keep them downstairs.

By evening, Diana, who'd been running around all day, was wolfing down her dinner.

Halfway through the meal, Louis piped up, "Emma, Emery, Diana and I are heading home tomorrow."

Mission accomplished, no need to stick around. Adults needed their space, after all.

"Why?" Diana looked puzzled. "I promised Eddy we'd swing together tomorrow. He even said he'd bring other friends to play with us."

"Don't you want Lon anymore?" Louis asked.

He thought Diana would hesitate.

But she only paused for a second before bluntly saying, "No."

"Why?" Louis was genuinely curious.

"He asked if I'd go find him tomorrow. I said I was gonna play with Eddy and would find him after I got home," Diana said, looking both hurt and mad. "Then he said if I didn't play with him tomorrow, I shouldn't reach out for him anymore."

Louis raised an eyebrow.

Diana went on, "If he doesn't wanna be friends, fine. I have Eddy anyway."

All eyes were on her now.

"Is your friendship with Lon that flimsy?" Louis asked cautiously.

"He threatened me first," Diana said, all logical. "I told him I was with Emma, but he still insisted I go find him tomorrow. He's making it hard for me."

Diana liked Lon because he was good-looking. But that didn't mean she had to bend over backward when he got all moody. She had other friends.

"Are you sure you won't contact him again?" Louis asked seriously.

"I'm sure for now." Diana was still mad but left a little wiggle room. "Not sure about later."

After all, finding someone as good-looking as Lon wasn't easy. If he apologized sincerely, she might just forgive him.

Hearing this, Louis knew she was just having a spat with Lon.

Emma, on the other hand, was curious. She tucked her hair behind her ear and asked, "Who's this Lon Diana keeps talking about?"

"He's super good-looking, just like Louis!" Diana perked up. "And he can cook, which is awesome."

Louis and Emma exchanged a look, realizing Diana had a bit of a crush on Lon.

Since Diana still wanted to hang out with Eddy next door, Louis and Diana ended up staying a few more days.
