Chapter 309 Daphne: [I Can't Beat Him.]
"Okay," Daphne nodded.
Benjamin took her to the parking lot, got her in the passenger seat, and drove off.
On the way, he kept sneaking glances at her.
She sat there quietly, as usual, making him second-guess his plan.
He'd spent a lot of time trying to make a good impression. He knew Daphne cared about appearances and saw him as a strict, cold captain despite his looks.
That's why he tried this approach.
He wanted her to see him differently, not just as she remembered.
But her lack of reaction made him doubt himself.
Though he usually understood Daphne well, he misjudged this time.
Daphne seemed calm, but inside, she was stirred by Benjamin's presence and his calling her name. She thought of past moments.
Like when Benjamin casually asked her to be his girlfriend.
Or today, when she asked what he wanted, and he casually replied, "You."
Or when he said he wanted something he could see every day, but giving it willingly was tough.
For a moment, Daphne almost concluded that Benjamin liked her.
However, she quickly dismissed the thought.
There was no reason for Benjamin to like her. He probably preferred lively, cute girls.
These conflicting thoughts made her feel confused.
"What's the matter?" Benjamin observed her subtle frown. "Why the troubled expression?"
Daphne shook her head. "Nothing."
"Really?" he asked.
"Yeah," she nodded.
The conversation ended there.
Benjamin wasn't worried. He didn't mind if Daphne figured out his feelings. As long as she didn't reject him, he had ways to explain.
He kept driving, and about ten minutes later, Daphne finally spoke.
She didn't like unresolved questions. "Benjamin."
"Yeah?" he replied.
"You..." Daphne hesitated, feeling embarrassed despite her usual calm. "Do you like me?"
Benjamin smiled, his voice low and lazy. "You're so great; who wouldn't like you?"
"I mean, like between a man and a woman," she clarified.
"Do you want me to like you?" he asked, throwing the ball back in her court.
Daphne fell silent, thinking, 'How do I answer that?'
"If you want to date, just let me know. I'm single," Benjamin said casually. "If not, that's fine too. Life doesn't need a partner."
Daphne looked at him, noticing how handsome he was from this angle.
Why hadn't she noticed before?
"Today at the hotel, when you said you wanted something, was it me?" she asked calmly.
Benjamin deflected. "Are you a thing?"
"I..." Daphne hesitated.
Saying yes or no felt awkward.
This made her doubt Benjamin's feelings less. If he really liked her, he wouldn't be setting traps.
Feeling more relaxed, she said, "Benjamin, if you like a girl in the future, don't talk to her like this."
"Why?" he asked.
"It makes it hard to keep the conversation going," she replied.
Benjamin didn't argue. Whether the conversation was difficult didn't matter. He couldn't answer her question hastily.
For the rest of the drive, Benjamin focused on the road while Daphne chatted with Emma and Zoey.
Daphne: [Do you guys think Benjamin is good-looking?]
Emma: [Are you planning to make a move on Benjamin?]
Zoey: [Do you like him?]
Daphne: [No, I just suddenly think he's quite good-looking.]
Emma and Zoey agreed. They always knew Benjamin was handsome, but it didn't matter since he was tough during training.
Emma: [You're picky about looks. Why not date Benjamin?]
Daphne: [No way.]
Zoey: [Why not?]
Daphne: [I can't beat him.]
She explained today's events to her friends, who had known each other since childhood and knew Benjamin well.
Daphne: [Do you think I'm overthinking it?]
Emma saw the message and called Zoey. As Benjamin's wingmen, they needed to be careful with their answers.
Emma: [We don't know. We don't see Benjamin much outside training. But if he likes you, what would you do?]
Daphne: [I don't know.]
She couldn't imagine dating Benjamin. It felt weird.
Zoey: [Are you still thinking about Charles?]
Daphne: [No.]
Emma: [Why not give it a try with Benjamin? If you two end up together, we can ask you for leniency during training.]
Zoey: [Right!]
Daphne: [Goodbye.]
She closed the chat.
Meanwhile, Charles had dinner with Mark and planned to leave at ten. But by nine, he was already impatient.
He found Mark and asked him to take him to the HorizonTech Group annual meeting hotel.
Mark told him the meeting had ended.
Charles's mood darkened. "Ended?"
"Yes," Mark said, unsure.
Charles wanted to get rid of Mark but knew he was important to Daphne. If something happened to him, she'd be suspicious.
"Call Daphne and tell her to pick me up," Charles said, feeling Mark was unreliable. "Say I haven't had dinner and didn't eat after lunch."
