Chapter 351 Benjamin Has Someone He Likes
Kevin felt stuck, and Emma drank to hide his feelings.
What a mess.
"Do you like Daphne?" Evan asked directly.
"Yes," Charles admitted. "Even though she turned me down before, I'll always like her. She's the one I want to protect forever."
Daphne knew Charles was being intentional but stayed silent.
"What took you so long?" Emma teased.
Charles just looked at her.
"Let's play Truth or Dare," Emma suggested, hoping to help Benjamin confess. "If you can't do it, drink three shots."
"Let's go!" Kevin was ready. He'd practiced cheating a bit to avoid losing too much.
"Let's use poker cards," Kevin said. "Joker is the highest, Ace of Spades is the lowest, then 2, 3, 4, and so on. Sound good?"
"Okay."
"No problem."
"I'm not playing; you five go ahead," Kevin said, and everyone agreed.
Kevin shuffled the cards and dealt them, explaining, "Lowest card picks truth or dare. Highest card asks or gives the dare."
"Let's start."
First round, Benjamin had the lowest card, a 4 of Hearts, and Emma had the highest, a Queen of Clubs.
Benjamin knew what they were up to but wanted to take it slow. He needed to set the stage for his confession.
"Truth," he said.
Daphne perked up, remembering what Benjamin had said before.
'If he likes someone, why did he ask me to pretend to be his girlfriend for Christmas?' she wondered.
"Emma," Daphne said, "ask Benjamin who he likes."
Emma gave her an OK gesture.
"Earlier, you said you confessed as a joke," Emma said. "What was her reaction?"
Daphne thought, 'Didn't she say OK? Why ask this?'
"She thought I was joking," Benjamin said honestly. "She didn't take it seriously."
"Why didn't you seriously confess?" Daphne asked without thinking.
Emma and Kevin exchanged knowing looks and pretended to agree.
"Yeah, Benjamin, maybe if you seriously confessed, you'd be together."
"What's her name?"
"Do we know her?"
"Where's she from?"
They kept asking, like detectives.
Benjamin smirked and raised an eyebrow. "Want to know?"
"Yes," Daphne and the others answered.
"The first round is over," Benjamin said casually. "Ask me again when you get the highest card and I get the lowest."
Daphne glanced at Kevin, who wondered why she was looking at him.
Daphne cleared her throat and whispered to Kevin, "Give me the highest card."
Kevin whispered back, "You want me to cheat?"
Daphne nodded. She didn't like cheating, but she really wanted to know who Benjamin liked and why he hadn't seriously confessed.
Benjamin had it all—looks, personality, background. His confession should've been a slam dunk.
Kevin awkwardly cleared his throat and dealt the cards.
Whether by chance or design, Daphne got the lowest card, and Benjamin got the highest.
Daphne stayed silent.
Emma was surprised at Kevin's dealing. "Daphne, truth or dare?"
"Truth," Daphne said, avoiding dare.
"What would you do if a friend confessed to you?" Benjamin asked slowly, like it was no big deal.
Daphne paused. "A friend?"
"Like Evan, Kevin, me, Dominic," Benjamin said, fidgeting with his card, his palm a bit sweaty.
"Not much," Daphne replied after thinking. "If I liked him, I'd accept. If not, I'd reject."
"Would you avoid him?" Benjamin asked.
"Why would I avoid him?" Daphne was puzzled.
Benjamin put down the cards and signaled Kevin to deal again.
Benjamin realized truth or dare was useless. Daphne probably wouldn't read too much into it.
Daphne didn't think much either, just found the question odd.
Kevin dealt the cards again.
To avoid making it obvious, he dealt randomly this time.
Unexpectedly, Charles got the highest card, and Daphne got the lowest.
Like before, Daphne chose truth.
Charles glanced at Benjamin. Knowing Benjamin liked Daphne, he asked directly, "If Benjamin confessed and said he liked you, would you accept?"
Emma and Evan paused. Only Benjamin stayed calm, looking nonchalant.
"Benjamin likes someone else; don't ask random questions," Daphne told Charles.
"Doesn't matter," Charles insisted. "Just answer honestly."
Daphne glanced at Benjamin and said, "No."
Saying yes would cause trouble. Benjamin liked someone else, so she couldn't answer randomly.
Charles felt relieved.
Benjamin's expression didn't change.
The others had subtle reactions, worried if Benjamin would still have the courage to confess.
Daphne's words were essentially a response.
"Continue," Benjamin said, unfazed, like he was used to it.
Kevin was no longer calm. He gave the lowest card to Benjamin and the highest to Evan.
After choosing truth again, Evan pondered and asked, "Why didn't you confess to the person you like?"
"Afraid she doesn't like me," Benjamin said, glancing at Daphne. "Afraid that after confessing, she'd avoid me, and we wouldn't even be friends."
Daphne paused, recalling what Lydia had told her: 'Liking someone is cautious, afraid of missing out if you don't confess, and afraid of...'
Daphne thought, 'Does Benjamin feel the same way?'
