Chapter 581 What Do You Mean?
"Are you not worried that if you divorce me, he'll come after you?" Elara asked, trying to come up with a plan.
Willie froze, realizing she might be right.
"So, what do I do now?" Willie glanced at his beloved car, regretting his decision to help Elara. "I can't lose my freedom, can I?"
If he had known Jesse was this intense, he wouldn't have gotten involved.
"I'll talk to him," Elara said, not seeing any other option. "I'll tell him to back off."
"No way!" Willie shot back immediately.
Elara was confused. "Why not?"
"He told me not to mention today to you. If I do, he'll come after me," Willie admitted, genuinely scared of Jesse.
Elara rubbed her temples. How was she going to handle this?
"Why don't you try to win him over again?" Willie suggested. "If he doesn't marry you, you can keep trying. Eventually, he'll give in."
"No," Elara replied quickly. She knew Jesse liked her, so why should she chase him?
"Was your car damaged at my place or yours?" Elara asked, testing the waters.
"Your place," Willie said, adding, "The car I drove to see you today."
"I'll check the surveillance footage. If I find anything, I'll show it to him," Elara said. "That way, he won't know you told me; he'll just think I found out myself."
"Are you sure?" Willie asked.
"Yes." Elara nodded.
Willie agreed for now. He had already decided that if this happened again, he would tell Jesse their marriage was a sham.
After hanging up, Elara started reviewing the surveillance footage and saw the confrontation between Jesse and Willie.
Elara had mixed feelings at that moment. Being protected by someone she liked was nice, but if she really married Willie, Jesse's actions would be a problem.
She saved a screenshot of one of the frames.
To avoid Jesse suspecting Willie, Elara didn't contact Jesse right away.
If she did, Jesse would think Willie had snitched, even if she had the footage.
Around eleven at night, Elara finally took Jesse off the blacklist and sent him the photo with a message: [Explain this, what do you mean?]
Jesse was lying in bed, unable to sleep. He wasn't usually an insomniac, but tonight was different.
When he heard his phone buzz, he thought it was work. He didn't want to deal with it but checked anyway.
Jesse froze when he saw the message. He quickly sat up, double-checking that it was from Elara.
Elara: [Are you asleep?]
Jesse's eyes lit up. He wanted to text back but ended up calling her instead.
Elara had told him not to find her or meet her, but calling shouldn't count, right?
She stared at the phone for a moment before picking up, trying to sound cold. "Explain why you went to my house to mess with Willie."
"He cheated on you," Jesse admitted.
"I allowed it," Elara replied, her tone icy. "When we got married, I told him it was just for show. I didn't care what he did before or after."
"But you two are a couple," Jesse reminded her.
He didn't want to see Elara unhappy or with someone who didn't care about her.
It might seem okay now, but as they got older, they'd realize that family happiness was what really mattered.
"I know better than you if we're a couple. I don't want you meddling in our business anymore," Elara insisted. "And stop threatening him."
"I didn't threaten him," Jesse lied.
"I know if you did or not," Elara snapped. "When I called him earlier, I asked if you'd seen him. He said no. If you hadn't threatened him, why would he lie? I know him well."
"So you're accusing me based on that?" Jesse asked.
"Yes," Elara said firmly.
"You're right to suspect," Jesse admitted after a pause.
Elara was about to lose it.
Jesse suddenly didn't know what to say, so he just called her name, "Elara."
Elara was about to respond when the balcony door opened.
Brian walked in with a plate of cut fruit, not noticing she was on the phone. "Have some fruit."
Hearing a man's voice, Jesse felt puzzled.
"Where are you?" Jesse asked instinctively.
"Where I am is none of your business," Elara shot back. "I'll say it one last time; stop messing with my life and Willie."
With that, Elara hung up.
She knew hanging up without explaining would make Jesse anxious.
Sure enough, Jesse called back immediately.
Brian, seeing this, was about to leave to give her some space, but Elara called out, "Brian."
"What's up?" Brian asked.
"Can you answer the phone for me?" Elara handed him her phone, clearly wanting to annoy Jesse. "If he asks who you are, just make something up. If he asks about me, say I'm taking a shower."
Brian, quick on the uptake, got it right away. "Is this the guy who turned you down?"
Elara nodded. "Yep."
Brian took the phone. Because of the special contact name, he didn't know it was Jesse on the other end.
Brian answered, lowering his voice, "Hello."
"Who are you?" Jesse's frown deepened.
Jesse knew Elara well enough to know she wouldn't let just anyone answer her phone.
