Chapter 160 Isn't This Guy A Little Too Arrogant?
After their talk, Kayla planned to leave. Charles had already helped her craft an excuse to report back to that person.
As Charles watched her retreating figure, he said firmly, "If you dare harm Daphne again, I'll personally make sure you end up in prison."
"Understood," Kayla said, a visible weight lifted off her shoulders. She had been carrying this burden for so long, the guilt and unease haunting her nights and waking her from sleep. But having spoken out, she felt much better.
To avoid disrupting Daphne's plan, Charles still played along with Kayla's act, making sure to the outside world it appeared that Kayla had been ousted from the Lancelot Group.
When Charles received an address from Daphne on his phone, he didn't hesitate and went straight to the location.
By the time Daphne met with Charles, it was already noon. She had chosen a spot with exceptional privacy to ensure their conversation stayed between them.
Charles, having Kayla's words in his mind, broached the subject, "Kayla mentioned you're planning on going undercover, to get close to that guy?"
"Yes."
"Wouldn't involving the police be better?"
"It's useless." Daphne knew the man's identity and his nature well, "He won't easily return to the country."
Charles frowned slightly, a reflex in response to this complication.
Daphne pulled up a photo on her phone and handed it over, "Do you recognize this guy?"
The man in the photo was the very person behind Kayla, the same man Daphne was determined to deal with.
Charles scrutinized the photo meticulously before giving a straightforward response, "Don't know him. What about it?"
"He's the one pulling the strings behind Kayla," Daphne explained slowly, "The first time, he sent Kayla to steal trade secrets from the Lancelot Group. The second time, to kill you."
If it had been an ordinary grudge, that man wouldn't have gone to such lengths to set these events in motion. Charles was informed about this by Kayla, but he genuinely had no recollection of the man.
"I can have someone investigate," Charles offered, his gaze fixed on Daphne's determined face, "You don't have to take this risk."
"I've already decided," said Daphne impulsively, emotional yet resolved, "You can choose to help or ignore it, but the decision is made."
Charles looked at her calm yet steadfast expression.
Finally, he asked, "If I help you, what's in it for me?"
"You'll get hit less," Daphne replied with an indifferent tone.
Charles was taken aback, "Aren't you being a bit too arrogant?"
"If I help you catch him, can we consider giving our marriage another chance?" Charles asked, looking at her earnestly.
"No," Daphne rejected him without hesitation. Business was business, personal was personal.
Moreover, she would never commit to such a trivial matter; it was pointless.
Charles was in a foul mood, but he was aware that the issue stemmed from his past actions, and in the end, he chose not to say more, leaving Daphne with a simple, "I will cooperate with you."
Daphne hummed in acknowledgment and thanked him.
From that day on, Daphne had begun discussing strategies with Evan and the others. Lucia and the three others had gone abroad to prepare, while she, along with Evan and Kevin, stayed behind in Gedser.
Things weren't as tense as they had imagined.
After making the necessary preparations and setting up a foundation, Daphne started to live her life normally.
Of course, she also arranged for people to protect her father and sister.
She wasn't worried about the possibility of long-distance shots harming her family members; after all, this was Gedser, within the jurisdiction of their captain's authority. Such occurrences were not likely to happen.
That same evening, Daphne had another talk with Kayla, which resulted in Kayla finally sending a report back.
The man on the other end would never have expected that timid Kayla could muster such courage this time around.
He thought Kayla was still the same lab rat he could send on errands at will.
"Failed?" The man was video calling her, his face not in the frame, just his body, "You should be clear on what I've told you before."
"Charles doesn't trust me anymore after what happened last time." Kayla feared him genuinely, and her emotions were real, "I truly did try my best."
The man sat there, toying with his ring. Kayla couldn't see his face; she had no idea what his expression might be.
Time trickled away slowly. Listening to the ticking of the clock in the man's room, panic and fear gradually filled Kayla's heart.
"It seems I'll just have to spread the word about you to your neighbors and let the people at your brother's school know," the man said in a measured tone, his slender pale fingers appearing almost sculpturally perfect.
Kayla's pupils contracted, with fear.
Then the man spoke again, "Your brother has his college entrance exams next year, doesn't he?"
"I have another idea!" Kayla started to follow the steps Daphne had told her, and if it had not been for her strong will, she would have already been panicking.
The man did not respond immediately, waiting instead for her to continue.
Kayla, who was sweating profusely, sat in front of her computer and said, "We... we could get Daphne to take action."
Hearing this. The man finally showed a reaction.
He chuckled softly at first, then followed it up with, "Go on."
"Charles is currently pursuing Daphne; he feels guilty over some past incidents," Kayla continued, swallowing nervously as she spoke of her fear, "As long as Daphne gets involved, there will be no problem."
"It's just that..." She hesitated for a moment.
What the man didn't know was that in front of Kayla's computer, there was a piece of paper.
The content on the paper was exactly the script Daphne had crafted for Kayla in advance, anticipating some of the questions the man might pose and setting the stage for Kayla. When people are nervous, they tend to misspeak or forget their lines. With the script, Kayla was less likely to slip up.
"What exactly?" the man prompted.
"I don't know how to get a hold of Daphne to make her do this," Kayla said emotionally, not glancing at the script, "but I can promise you, if she goes through with it, it's bound to be a success."
Listening, the man with eyes hidden from Kayla's view had an inscrutable darkness in them. His thoughts were on Charles as he stared at Kayla on the computer screen.
Finally, he spoke. "You just said Charles is pursuing Daphne?" he asked.
"Yes…" Kayla didn't understand the reason behind the question but answered truthfully.
"Leave Charles alone for now," the man said calmly, his true thoughts unknown, "Just stay put in Gedser."
Kayla was baffled.
The script had led to this point and now… they were just dropping it?
"Keep your phone available," the man added in a deep, steady voice that was unintentionally intimidating, "I don't want to be unable to reach you when I need to."
