Chapter 268 Daphne, How Can You Be So Heartless
As the elevator doors slid open, Daphne stepped out, and a figure rushed over to hug her. "Daphne!"
"Daphne!" The others joined in, surrounding her in a group hug.
Daphne looked at the familiar faces and paused. "Emma, Zoey?"
"Daphne! And us too!" Kevin pouted. "Are youafraid Dominic and the handsome guy will get jealous?"
All of Daphne's teammates were there.
Daphne was puzzled. "Why are you all here?"
"After you made the signal disappear, Benjamin told us to return to Gedser and wait," Emma, always kind to Daphne, explained. "He said he'd bring you back."
"You almost scared us to death!"
"Yeah."
"Why did you make the signal disappear?"
"There were too many people there. The whole Butterfly Island was surrounded," Daphne explained. "If you had come, I was worried..."
She didn't finish, but everyone understood.
"It's all over now, as long as you're okay."
"Right!"
Benjamin's gaze swept over everyone. He knew Daphne still had things to do, so he instructed, "You all go back first; we'll talk tomorrow. Daphne needs a good rest."
"Okay," Emma said first. "We'll come find you tomorrow."
"You're not allowed to go to the office tomorrow!"
"Save your time for us."
"Did you hear that?"
Each of them chimed in, all in a stern tone.
Daphne understood and agreed. "Okay."
Satisfied, they left, seeing that Daphne was safe.
Daphne wanted to see them off, but they refused.
After they left, Benjamin, tall and imposing, stood there, looking down at her with a heavy heart. Though he had much to say, he only said, "Go inside and rest well; it's all over."
Daphne responded, "You should rest early, too."
"Okay," Benjamin replied in a deep voice.
Daphne turned and opened her door. As she closed it, she glanced at Benjamin one last time before finally shutting it.
Michael was caught; she should have felt relieved.
However, ever since she parted ways with Charles, the unease in her heart had persisted; now it was even stronger.
She pinched her tired brow, planning to look into Charles and Brian's matters first.
As she changed her shoes and walked inside, she noticed something was off in her home.
Had someone been here?
She walked to the sofa, picked up the phone that had been there for two days, opened an app, and turned on all the lights in the house with one click.
In an instant, the whole room was as bright as day.
She didn't walk further in; she just sat on the sofa and said calmly, "Are you coming out on your own, or should I call security to get you out?"
"Don't be so harsh." Nina emerged from the bedroom. "I was hiding to give you a surprise."
Daphne paused.
Nina?
She stared at her for a few moments. "Why are you here?"
"Didn't you ask me to send Kayla back to Gedser safely?" Nina sat down in front of her. "I just sent her back and thought you might be coming back, so I came over."
Daphne looked at her suspiciously.
When she left with Kayla, she and Charles were at a disadvantage. How did she know she would be coming back?
"Don't look at me like that. When I left with Kayla, I saw someone capturing Michael's people," Nina explained, seeing through her doubts. "That's why I waited here for you."
"What if I didn't come back?" Daphne asked.
At the last moment, if it weren't for Charles's preparations, she wasn't sure if she could have returned.
Nina had great faith in her. "You couldn't not come back; you're my most admired teacher."
Daphne didn't say anything. She stood up and got two glasses of water—one for Nina, one for herself.
"Well..." Nina hesitated.
Daphne raised an eyebrow. "Just say it."
"What are you planning to do about the baby in your belly?" Nina scratched her head. After finding out that Daphne was her teacher, she couldn't help but care more. "You and Charles are already divorced. If you have the baby, won't he come to fight for it?"
Daphne was momentarily stunned. "What baby?"
"This one." Nina pointed to her belly.
Daphne was silent.
Without needing to lie, she didn't guard against it much.
Seeing her silence, Nina thought she was contemplating. "Do you want your baby?"
"I'm not pregnant," Daphne confessed. Michael was caught; there was no need to worry about these things. "There's no such concern."
"Impossible!" Nina instinctively refuted. "Kayla said it herself, and I checked."
If it weren't so, Michael wouldn't have believed it.
"What you found was what I wanted you to find," Daphne told her. She then taught her another lesson. "As for Kayla, after Michael sent her to kill Charles, she had already started cooperating with me."
Nina was in disbelief.
She recalled the past events and found it incredible. "Michael said Kayla was the least likely to betray him."
That was also why Michael was so angry when he found out Kayla's phone system was reinforced by K.
He couldn't accept Kayla's betrayal.
"He was wrong," Daphne said slowly. "Kayla was the most likely to betray him, but she didn't dare because she could not resist and was threatened."
"What happened between them?" Nina was curious.
She knew little about Michael's private matters and wouldn't ask; she only investigated when he asked for help.
Daphne didn't elaborate. "I don't know."
"That's not right. If Michael knew Kayla betrayed him, how could he let her go?" Nina thought of a key point she had overlooked. "When you let Kayla go, shouldn't he have realized?"
"He couldn't have realized," Daphne said.
Nina asked, "Why?"
Daphne didn't answer.
In Michael's view, she was K, still working under Benjamin.
As a member of the organization, following orders was paramount; protecting citizens was their duty and responsibility, so he didn't suspect.
"Thank you for Kayla's matter." Daphne was still thinking about Charles and Brian. "Considering you didn't commit any substantial wrongdoing and saved someone at the last moment, I won't have you arrested, but if you do this again, I won't be lenient."
"Teacher, how can you be so heartless?"
"Am I still your student?"
"I'm so good-looking, and you don't even take a second look?" Nina muttered.
Anyone familiar with her would go crazy seeing her so obedient and gentle now.
Daphne went to the study, turned on the computer to investigate, and before starting, she replied to Nina, "If you're always obsessed with others' looks, you'll encounter a lot of trouble."
