Chapter 460 I'll Become Bad Like You
"Daphne just said she's gonna chat with the big shots at the fireworks and drone companies. Looks like she's got a plan to fix this mess," Kevin said, his young face all serious. "Evan told me Daphne was all about drones back in college overseas."
"If she pulls this off, she might snag a few more patents."
"Now I'm kinda curious about what Daphne's cooking up."
"I'm more pumped to see how Benjamin reacts."
They all chimed in one after another.
For the next while, Daphne was holed up at the drone base, tweaking, testing, and tweaking again. She was crazy busy.
Benjamin didn't see her for days after he got back. Every time he called, she was all, "I'm swamped with the drones." When she finally showed up, she was so wiped out she crashed right away.
In the end, Benjamin dragged Emma and the gang aside to teach them a lesson, since they told him Daphne was at the base helping them trick out the drones they were into.
As friends, they had to pitch in and take some of the heat.
If they weren't helping him plan the proposal, Benjamin might've chewed them out even more.
Time flew by, and a month zipped past.
Daphne finally wrapped up the drone mods and programming.
Feeling relieved, she bolted to find Benjamin and show off the new stuff she and the designer cooked up.
Seeing the big progress, Benjamin got all concerned. "Don't burn yourself out like that again. Even if they wanna play, you don't need to pull all-nighters for them."
"Got it," Daphne said, feeling a bit guilty.
She figured she owed Emma and Zoey for helping her carry such a big load.
"Have you felt off during your period this month?" Benjamin asked, ruffling her hair with concern.
Daphne froze, looking a bit shocked.
Benjamin noticed her change. "What's up?"
"I haven't had my period this month," Daphne said, a bit nervous. "Could I be pregnant?"
Her period was late. She usually only missed by a day or two, but never this late.
Plus, she'd been feeling queasy and had no appetite, which was weird for her.
"No way," Benjamin said confidently, his deep voice calming. "We've only done it twice, and we used protection both times. You can't be pregnant."
"But I've been feeling nauseous and not hungry," Daphne said, thinking out loud.
Benjamin's face got serious.
He grabbed her hand. "I'll take you to get checked."
"No need," Daphne said. "Maybe staying up late messed up my cycle. I'll wait a few more days, and if my period still doesn't come, I'll go."
Benjamin wanted to push, but Daphne was firm. She hated hospitals. If it was a minor thing, she'd tough it out as long as she didn't have to go to the hospital.
All day, Daphne seemed chill on the outside, but inside, she was freaking out about it.
She thought about testing herself, but in her current state, the result probably wouldn't be accurate, which just made her worry more.
Benjamin noticed and did some online sleuthing for ways to check for pregnancy without hitting up the hospital. He found a solution and bought a pregnancy test.
The result? Negative.
Daphne felt a huge wave of relief wash over her.
Seeing her reaction, Benjamin felt a twinge of guilt.
He walked over, his voice still calm and soothing. "Are you that scared of being pregnant?"
"A little," Daphne admitted honestly. "I'm not ready to be a mom yet."
Daphne liked kids but needed some time to get her head around the idea.
"With proper contraception, the chances are super low," Benjamin said, ruffling her hair to comfort her. "Don't stress too much."
Despite his words, he made a silent vow: no more sex with Daphne until they were hitched.
If her period was late again, she'd be a wreck.
"I know." Daphne nodded.
After telling her to get some rest, Benjamin headed to the kitchen to whip up something for her.
It seemed her late period was mostly due to her messed-up sleep and diet.
Daphne felt his care and concern. Before he left the room, she called out, "Benjamin!"
"Yeah?"
"I like you." Daphne blurted out her feelings.
Benjamin raised an eyebrow and walked back, lightly pinching her cheeks with a teasing tone. "Why the sudden confession? Did you do something naughty?"
"Go on. Since you said you like me, I'll let it slide." Benjamin pinched her again, enjoying the feel.
"There's a reason you've been single for thirty years," Daphne thought, realizing he was even more clueless about romance than she was.
"There's a reason. I was actually waiting for someone to show up."
Daphne fell silent.
For the umpteenth time, she realized she couldn't win a verbal spar with Benjamin.
Seeing her helpless expression, Benjamin felt quite pleased, his lips curving into a slight smile. "What's with that look? Are you that impatient with my waiting?"
"Go cook." Daphne changed the subject, unsure how to respond. "I'm kinda hungry."
"Don't change the subject."
"Go."
Benjamin laughed.
Daphne thought Benjamin was great in every way, except for his love of teasing people with his wicked sense of humor!
"Benjamin, if I stay with you long enough, I'll turn bad like you," Daphne felt the need to remind him, speaking very seriously. "You always make fun of me. Aren't you afraid I'll turn the tables one day?"
Benjamin looked at her leisurely. "I'm looking forward to it."
He was curious about what Daphne could say to roast him. It'd probably be something about being single for thirty years.
"Are you sure?" Daphne had never heard such a strange request.
Benjamin was very certain. "Sure."
"What if I mention your nickname?"
"Go ahead."
Chris would never spill his nickname. Henry and Anouk hadn't contacted her since their last meeting, so they wouldn't either.
As for Sierra, she definitely wouldn't say.
"Last time I went to your house, Anouk already told me your nickname." Daphne decided to give Benjamin some psychological pressure.
Benjamin didn't buy it. If Anouk had told her last time, Daphne wouldn't have waited until now to bring it up.
He naturally replied, "Really?"
