Chapter 298 Ambitious, But Unfortunately Out of Chances

Benjamin finished talking and led Charles out the door, taking the elevator down.

Daphne was still mulling over Charles's condition. It didn't seem like just bloating.

After they left, Lydia asked curiously, "Daphne, be honest. If Benjamin pursued you, would you say yes?"

Daphne replied almost instantly, "No."

Benjamin was out of her league. She still remembered how grueling their training was, and she couldn't handle it.

Even now, just having dinner with him felt surreal.

"Why not?" Lydia was puzzled. "Benjamin's good-looking, treats you well and is super gentle. Isn't that a good deal?"

"Some people are just better as friends," Daphne said thoughtfully.

Not just Daphne, even Emma and Zoey wouldn't dare to dream.

If she didn't know how Benjamin trained people, she might be tempted. After all, she had realized during this time that Benjamin was really good.

However, thinking of Benjamin, her first thought was his harsh training, cold and ruthless.

"What if Charles pursues you after he recovers?" Lydia asked again. "Would you agree?"

"No," Daphne said firmly.

Lydia sighed. "Then you..."

"I'm not looking for a relationship right now," Daphne clarified. "You just focus on your boyfriend."

Lydia was a bit worried. "Daphne."

She worried that Daphne had lost hope because of her past relationship. But life was long. Wouldn't Daphne be lonely if she stayed single?

"Have you got your dress for the company party?" Daphne changed the subject, not wanting to discuss it further. "Want me to help you pick one?"

"It's already sorted." Lydia saw she didn't want to talk about it and dropped the subject.

Meanwhile, Charles and Benjamin were wandering in the garden downstairs. Seeing Charles sulking, Benjamin spoke up, "Why did you lie to Daphne?"

"None of your business," Charles pouted like a child.

Benjamin sat on a bench, his tone casual. "Don't like me?"

Charles glanced at Benjamin, not speaking. Knowing and still asking—did all adults have such bad taste?

"Let me guess," Benjamin said, treating him like a child. "Is it because Daphne talked to me and ignored you, and you felt left out?"

Charles, with his childlike temperament, couldn't hide his feelings.

He glared at Benjamin, showing his dislike clearly.

Benjamin didn't argue with him. If Charles were normal, he might have said something, but now, he was just a person with the mind of a five-year-old.

"Don't lie in the future," Benjamin kindly reminded. "Daphne doesn't like being lied to."

"None of your business," Charles said angrily.

"I don't want to care either," Benjamin smiled, his tone casual. "But I promised Daphne I'd help take care of you."

Charles was a bit unhappy, thinking, 'Does Daphne think I'm hard to take care of, so she asked Benjamin to help?'

"I'll tell Daphne to let me take care of you when we go back," Benjamin said in a low and slow voice, "Let her focus on her own stuff."

Charles blurted out, "No way!"

Benjamin's tone rose. "I insist."

"If you dare, I'll tell Daphne you hit me," Charles threatened, thinking quickly.

Benjamin's gaze swept over him, as if to say: You don't have a single injury on you, where did I hit you?

Charles was determined.

With a thud, he threw himself to the ground, scraping his already blistered hand, blood slowly oozing out.

"There's a camera over there," Benjamin lazily pointed to a spot. "Even if you go back covered in injuries, Daphne will know after checking the footage."

Charles sat on the ground, clearly unhappy.

Seeing it was about time, Benjamin stood up from the bench. "Let's go, time to head back."

"I don't want you to take care of me," Charles stood up stubbornly.

"When I get together with Daphne, it won't matter if you want it or not," Benjamin said, his tone light and his demeanor relaxed, "Then you'll not only be taken care of by me, but you'll also have to call me brother-in-law."

Charles knew what brother-in-law meant. In the afternoon, while watching TV with Lydia, he would occasionally read books or use his phone.

So upon hearing this, Charles blurted out, "Daphne won't marry you. When I grow up, I'll marry her."

"Ambitious," Benjamin said truthfully, "But unfortunately, you won't have the chance."

No matter what, Benjamin wouldn't let Daphne fall into Charles's trap again.

Even if Charles knew his mistakes and corrected them, Benjamin always believed that life didn't offer second chances. Once lost, it was lost.

"I will," Charles clenched his fists.

"Then why don't you go up and ask her," Benjamin's gaze met his. "See what she says."

Charles looked at him twice, then started walking back.

Although Daphne didn't seem to like him much, he would become excellent when he grew up and make Daphne like him.

Benjamin leisurely followed behind him.

When they returned, Daphne and Lydia were still waiting for them in the living room. Seeing them come back, Daphne asked Charles, "Does it still hurt?"

Charles shook his head. "No."

Daphne felt a bit relieved.

"Daphne," Charles's hand clenched, a bit nervous and apprehensive.

Daphne noticed his hesitation. "What's wrong?"

"Can I marry you when I grow up?" Charles's eyes looked at her without blinking, with cautious hope deep in his eyes.

Daphne paused, instinctively looking at Benjamin. What did they talk about downstairs?

"You're an adult now," Daphne told Charles, "It's just that you became a child because of an injury."

Charles found this very vague and continued to ask, "Then can I marry you after I recover?"

"No!" Lydia spoke up.

Charles asked, "Why?"

Lydia said, "Because you used to..."

"Because marriage requires mutual affection," Daphne stopped Lydia, changing to a gentler explanation. "This kind of affection you don't understand now, but you'll understand after you recover."

Charles listened in confusion, not quite understanding. But he understood one thing: Daphne didn't answer directly, which meant she didn't like him.

Thinking about this, Charles felt a dull pain in his heart, a strange feeling spreading in his chest.

"Then will you be with him and make me call him brother-in-law?" Charles pointed at Benjamin, asking another question with a look of dejection.
