Chapter 59 Are you disappointed when you see me?
A cold, harsh voice suddenly sounded. Mark's body stiffened, as he heard his boss's voice. Before the smile on his face could fade, he heard his boss speak again.
"Enjoying yourself?" Charles walked over with measured steps, increasing the pressure. Both Mark and Daphne looked at him at the same time.
Mark stood up almost instantly and swallowed hard. "Boss..."
“Why is the boss here!” He thought to himself. Daphne glanced at him and continued reading, unaffected by his presence at all.
But he came in directly, probably guessed her password. Looks like she needs to change it at some point.
"Is the apology statement prepared?" Charles accumulated frustration inside. Mark instinctively looked at Daphne. He didn't know whether Miss Murphy had finished writing it or not, but he had been working on it all afternoon.
"What's the rush?" Daphne replied casually. "It will be published sooner or later."
"I want to see it before tomorrow evening," Charles didn't understand how she could still be so nonchalant, "If you fail to deliver, you'll face the consequences."
"Are you annoying or what?" Daphne retorted mercilessly, "Can't you be a little quieter while watching TV?"
With that, she carried her water and walked upstairs. Both of them were stunned. They never expected Daphne to suddenly get angry. Mark pursed his lips and tentatively said, "Boss, don't worry. I'll work overtime and write one myself. If Miss Murphy hasn't finished hers by tomorrow, I'll send her the one I wrote."
Charles stared at him, remaining silent. Mark felt his scalp tingling from the intense gaze. He rubbed his face, looking slightly bewildered. "What's wrong?"
"Why aren't you going home for dinner at this hour?" Charles's eyes darkened, carrying a hint of coldness in his expression.
"I've already eaten," Mark, too immersed in the reality show, had forgotten to be meticulous in his response, "When it was past six, Miss Murphy ordered my portion of food as well, and we had dinner together."
Cold air radiated from Charles's eyes. During this time, he hadn't had a meal with Daphne. Yet here she was, making him supervise, and she's been enjoying herself. Mark's mind processed a bit slower at this moment. "Did you not eat yet?"
"I went to the office and cleaned the bathroom," Charles didn't answer his question.
"Did you really clean it?"
"Do I look like I'm joking with you?"
"What about Miss Murphy's place then..."
"I personally checked it," Charles lightly pursed his thin lips, emphasizing the word "personally."
Mark suddenly realized where his boss's coldness came from. "Understood, I'll go to the office now."
Charles glanced around the room. If he hadn't come tonight, did Daphne plan to have Mark stay overnight here?
Without even greeting Daphne, he went upstairs through the elevator and knocked on the door to Daphne's room. Daphne thought it was Mark and opened the door. After all, in her opinion, Charles would never stay here.
He probably came here just to urge Mark's progress, as it's always different when he personally urges Mark compared to urging him over the phone. But when Daphne opened the door and saw that it was Charles, she didn't even greet him and tried to close the door. This time, Charles stopped her.
He did notice the change in her eyes when she saw it was him, and the thought of Mark staying overnight at her place tonight added a sting to his words, "Disappointed to see me?"
"I am quite disappointed," Daphne couldn't be bothered to beat around the bush with him.
"Just so infatuated with Mark?"
"I prefer interacting with people who have a brain."
"Daphne!"
"Speak up if you have something to say, otherwise leave."
"You get this angry just because I want an apology?" Charles brought up the past, "When you spread rumors about Kayla, did you think about the consequences then?"
Daphne remained silent, making Charles feel quite uncomfortable. He would rather have her argue with him, scold him, anything but being ignored like this.
Right at that moment, his phone rang. When he saw the caller ID displaying Rex Lancelot, he furrowed his brows and walked towards the balcony of the study, then answered the call, "What's the matter?"
"Can't I call you if there's nothing wrong?" a cheerful voice came from the other end, with a hint of teasing, "My dear brother."
"One more word and I'll throw you into the Pacific Ocean," Charles' words were chilly.
Rex chuckled lightly, still in his casual tone, "If you throw me into the Pacific Ocean, grandpa will definitely break your legs."
"What's the matter, after all?" Charles asked again.
They don't contact each other for months unless there's something, he couldn't believe his brother called him for no reason.
"Grandpa asked me to check on your love life," Rex's nonchalant and cheerful voice continued, "I heard from Mark that you divorced Daphne for your crush?" Charles remained silent. Rex continued, "To be honest, I support your divorce, considering your dull nature. Daphne deserves better."
Charles remained silent. "By the way, I have a few friends who are good at playing around, reliable, and know how to please others. I can introduce them to Daphne if she's interested. It might be lucky for that friend if Daphne likes them."
"I did some investigation, and they don't have any lingering feelings or ex-girlfriend in the picture. They're also very loyal in relationships. The most important thing is, once they're together, they unconditionally believe in the person they like."
Rex kept talking incessantly, not afraid of offending his brother at all. Charles tightened his grip on the phone and his breath became heavy. He understood Rex, and he spoke in such a way that it showed he would truly do as he said. From childhood till now, there's nothing that Rex couldn't accomplish.
"We're not divorced yet," he said calmly, his voice deep.
"Isn't it fast enough? It's only six or seven days away," Rex's voice was melodious, sounding like a sunny and handsome young man. "If you have a lover, then Daphne should have suitors too."
"Feeling a bit itchy?" Charles's gaze grew deeper.
"I'm just kindly analyzing. Not that I'm talking about you, but only your crush can appreciate your personality," Rex said fearlessly. "Nowadays, girls like men who know how to spoil them."
"Take my friend for example. When his girlfriend was being bullied, he immediately rushed to her side. When those people asked him if he had any sense of reason, he simply replied, 'I'm here to protect her, not to reason with you.'" Rex continued chatting non-stop, "The girls present at the time were moved by his words."
A slight wrinkle formed between Charles's eyebrows as his thoughts involuntarily drifted into the past. Daphne's attitude towards him seemed to change since he received that call from Kayla. Before that, she treated him well, and he took care of her with thoughtfulness and consideration. Their relationship was envied by others.
"Alright, I won't bother you anymore," Rex interrupted when he felt he had said enough. "I do care about your relationship issues, so if our grandfather asks, don't pretend I haven't said anything."
"Are you sure you're caring?" Charles asked him.
Rex laughed carefreely, "Do I need to fly back to give you a hug then?"
"Get lost," Charles retorted without hesitation.
