Chapter 371 Can I Stay at Your Place for A While?

"When are you bringing him over?" Brian asked after a pause.

"Depends on him," Daphne replied. She didn't want to decide for others. "To you, he's still the old Charles, but he feels different."

"That's because he doesn't get it," Brian said.

"Do you really think he has nothing to do with the second personality?" Daphne wasn't convinced. "I don't know much about your research, but his personality and behavior are totally different now. Are you sure he's just lost his memory?"

Brian hesitated.

Daphne felt conflicted. "I can't interfere with your research, but based on Charles's situation, I don't think you should continue."

Changing one's personality and life could be done without these methods.

"A lot of people need this," Brian said seriously. "They want to be strong, not defeated by anything. They can't do it alone, but I can help."

"Really?" Daphne asked.

"Yes," Brian replied.

"No matter how a personality changes, it can still collapse. There's no invincible personality," Daphne said clearly. "The only thing that can't be defeated is a strong heart."

Personality is shaped by the environment, but the heart is strengthened by experiences.

"I'll tell Charles about the memory thing. It's his choice to restore it or not," Daphne said, ending the conversation.

She left, leaving Brian standing there, her words echoing in his mind.

A strong heart? Brian had been researching this for years to fulfill his sister's dying wish. She had said, "If there was a medicine to make one strong and forget all sadness, it would be great."

Brian thought, 'I don't have the medicine, but I can help people change their personalities. But now, am I wrong?'

Feeling conflicted, Brian wanted to talk to someone. He took out his phone, found Richard's number, and dialed.

After a few rings, Richard answered coldly. "Speak."

"Richard," Brian said, sitting on the couch, feeling desolate. "Do you think my research is pointless?"

Richard paused, thinking, 'Is he feeling down?'

"Daphne just told me she doesn't recommend I continue this research," Brian continued. Doubt was creeping in.

"Maybe try something else, and you'll do better," Richard suggested, not mocking him for once.

Brian was stunned. Was he really wrong?

"No matter what kind of personality someone has, they've been hurt in life," Richard said kindly. "This shows that no personality is indestructible."

Brian stayed silent, thinking deeply.

"To truly make someone indestructible, you need to understand their environment, work, and social circle," Richard explained. "And what their future holds. Only then can you provide a suitable personality for the challenges they'll face."

"But be real, can you do that?" Richard asked the crucial question.

Brian swallowed hard and reluctantly answered, "No."

Predicting future events was beyond current technology, let alone his capabilities.

Richard didn't say more.

Brian's work in neurology and psychology was top-notch. When others couldn't erase specific memories, he could.

Richard believed Brian would figure it out.

"If there's nothing else, I'll hang up now," Richard said, a rare courtesy. He used to just hang up on Brian.

Brian barely whispered, "Okay."

After the call, Brian thought about Charles's situation, Daphne's words, and what Richard had just said, piecing it all together.

In the end, he felt Daphne and Richard made sense.

Brian was initially disheartened, but Richard's kind words and gentle goodbye lifted his spirits.

It was just research. If it failed, he'd start over. If this direction didn't work, he'd change it.

Richard being so kind was extremely rare, which made Brian very happy.

Brian rubbed his phone, opened his messages with Richard, and after some thought, sent: [Can I stay at your place for a while?]

Richard had just picked up his utensils for dinner when he saw the message. He wanted to refuse.

Richard didn't want too much interaction with Brian. He couldn't let go of the past so quickly. But thinking of Brian now, with his drooping head and desolate face, he felt a bit soft-hearted. After some consideration, he agreed: [Okay.]

Richard decided that as soon as Brian's mental state improved, he'd kick him out. For now, he'd reluctantly take Brian in.

Brian almost jumped for joy when he saw the message.

He didn't care about the research anymore. He put away his phone and started packing.

Clothes, shoes, toiletries, everything went into the suitcase. He figured Charles wouldn't come to him to restore his memory in the next few days.

Brian thought, 'Last time, because of Charles, I had to leave Richard's house. This time, I won't let anyone ruin it.'

After packing, he put the suitcase in his trunk, imagining the days and nights with Richard. The more he thought about it, the warmer he felt inside.

However, as Brian started the car to go to Richard's place, he realized something was wrong.

He was supposed to be feeling down, in a bad mood. Packing luggage didn't fit that narrative.

If Richard saw him so well-prepared, he'd definitely be suspicious.

After some thought, Brian threw the suitcase back into the base, taking only his car keys and phone to Richard's place. Anyway, he and Richard were about the same size. If he needed clothes, he could wear Richard's.
