Chapter 544 The Complicated Charles
"I get it," Mark said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "Even though my marriage with her was kinda rushed, I made the choice, and I'm sticking with it. I won't betray her."
Mark used to think he'd marry someone he was head over heels for.
But now he realized that in the adult world, some things aren't really up to you.
Jesse nodded.
Before they knew it, the night had flown by.
The next day, Mark took Jesse around town. They ate, drank, and chatted.
During lunch, Jesse asked, "Isn't your wedding tomorrow? Shouldn't you be getting ready?"
"It's all set. I just need to pick up the bride at the scheduled time tomorrow morning," Mark said, sounding confident. "I'm a bit nervous, so I need to chat with you to chill out."
Even though it wasn't a passionate love, he still liked her.
For a big event like a wedding, anyone would feel a bit nervous.
"Go work," Jesse suggested.
Mark looked confused. "What do you mean?"
Jesse explained seriously, without a hint of joking, "Work is my go-to when I'm feeling anxious. Even ten minutes helps."
"I don't have any work to do," Mark replied casually. "I've handed over my tasks to two assistants over the past few years. Mr. Lancelot hasn't given me much work either; he handles most of it himself."
"Is he planning to fire you?" Jesse asked.
"No way," Mark instinctively refuted, feeling once again that Charles had really changed. "He thinks I should get married and has given me time to date."
Jesse paused, clearly surprised.
In his mind, Charles was a boss who loved making people work overtime, as Mark often complained about it before.
It seemed people do change.
"Now that you mention it, I feel like Mr. Lancelot reduced my workload to keep himself busy," Mark said seriously, recalling their interactions. "These past few years, he's either working overtime at the company or spending time with his family at The Lancelot Mansion. Otherwise, he's at Queens Villa."
Previously, Hayden and Laura were a bit worried about his situation.
But later, Charles must have said something to them, and since then, no one cared about his love life anymore. Even the senior management and shareholders of the Lancelot Group stopped mentioning it.
At this moment, Charles appeared.
Seeing him, Mark politely greeted, "Hey, Mr. Lancelot."
"Hey," Charles responded lightly. His perfect features had gained maturity and steadiness, making him look more composed.
Charles initially planned to leave after a brief greeting but noticed Jesse standing beside him.
For a moment, his eyes flickered.
Jesse, seeing him look over, didn't speak but naturally met his gaze.
"Are you here to see Mr. Rex Lancelot?" Mark sensed the awkward atmosphere and changed the topic.
Charles withdrew his gaze from Jesse, but his emotions were already in turmoil. "Yeah, if you see him, tell him to go home. My mom and dad are looking for him."
"Okay," Mark replied.
Charles then walked away.
Feeling particularly heavy-hearted, he called Austin.
When Austin arrived, he grumbled, "Molly finally called me, and you interrupted it."
"Sorry," Charles apologized, his voice a bit deeper than usual.
Austin looked puzzled. "What's up with you?"
"If it's urgent, you can talk to Molly first," Charles said, feeling down and not in the mood to argue. "It's nothing serious on my end."
"What's wrong?" Austin sensed something was off and asked.
Charles didn't respond; he didn't know what was wrong with him either.
Over the years, Austin occasionally told him about Daphne.
Her happiness was all that mattered to him, so he felt little when he heard about her.
But just now, seeing Jesse, many memories of Daphne suddenly surfaced, making his usually well-maintained heart feel complicated and indescribable.
Seeing Charles not speak, Austin could only guess, "Did something happen to Daphne?"
"Watch your mouth! Nothing would happen to her," Charles thought Austin really didn't know how to talk.
"Then why do you look like this?" Austin spoke naturally, adding, "Did her husband cheat on her?"
Charles felt Austin couldn't say anything good.
His deep eyes showed a bit of coldness as he responded, "The chance of him cheating is lower than you and Daisy getting back together."
"How can you say that?" Austin immediately got upset.
Over the years, Molly had grown up and liked him more.
But Daisy never agreed to remarry him, only giving him the freedom to see Molly.
"Then why did you call me out?" Austin naturally sat on the couch. "You can't be thinking of getting married after seeing Mark's wedding and planning to poach Daphne from Benjamin, right?"
"I have work at the company. I'm leaving," Charles uttered, standing up and leaving.
Calling Austin out was a mistake; this guy couldn't say anything appropriate.
Austin wanted to call Charles back but saw him walking quickly. In the end, he could only say, "If you still can't move on, you could have a child and let your child woo hers when they grow up."
Charles walked even faster.
When it came to bad ideas, Austin was second to none.
After returning home, Charles pondered for a while and sent Mark a message: [Who did you invite to your wedding?]
Mark sent a list.
Ten minutes later, Charles read through it.
Not finding the person he had in mind, he asked: [Anyone else besides these?]
Mark: [No.]
After sending this, Mark realized something.
Could Charles be wanting Daphne to come?
Thinking about this, Mark tentatively asked: [If you want someone to come, I can invite them.]
Charles pursed his lips and replied lightly, implying he was just asking.
The more Charles explained, the more certain Mark became. He directly sent a message: [Do you want Ms. Murphy to come?]
Charles replied very quickly: [No.]
After replying, Charles put his phone aside, rubbed his temples, and leaned back on the couch, trying to clear his chaotic mind.
