Chapter 225 Charles's Regrets
"You should go and offer her a sincere apology," Matt, always the voice of reason, suggested. "Try to make amends as best as you can."
Charles replied, "She won't accept it. Besides, she doesn't care for my amends."
"Whether she accepts it or not is her business, but if you feel you've done wrong, you should apologize," Matt said gently.
Charles fell silent, lost in his thoughts.
"Or do you want to win her back?" Matt guessed.
"She won't give me that chance," Charles said in a low voice.
Hearing his tone and words, Matt's gaze softened with emotion. He wondered, 'What had happened between them?'
Charles set down his wine glass and leaned back against the sofa. His head was resting on the back, and his eyes were fixed on the dim light of the ceiling. His emotions seemed to have reached a point where he needed to vent.
"Charles," Matt called him. He had never seen Charles like this, who was as fragile as a porcelain doll that could shatter at a touch.
Charles closed his eyes, hiding all his emotions. Once he had suppressed them, he spoke in a hoarse voice, "I'm fine."
"Do you regret divorcing Daphne?" Matt asked again as he looked at his face.
Charles stared at the ceiling. Just when Matt thought he wouldn't answer, he spoke, "Yes."
Not only did he regret it, but he also wished he could go back to six months ago when nothing had happened. He would have ignored Kayla's calls and stayed with Daphne. He would cherish her, love her, and make her happy.
"Then remember this feeling well." Matt was a true friend of Charles. His words always struck straight to his heart. "So you don't make the same mistake again."
He had warned Charles. But people were like that. They didn't turn back until they run into a wall. Only through real experience did they grow and learn.
Charles listened to Matt's sarcastic words without rebuttal. It seemed he was accepting everything as it was.
By the time they left, it was already midnight.
Although Mark had gone back early, he was still a bit worried about Charles. When Matt called him, he drove over to pick them up immediately.
Charles and Matt sat in the back seat. From the moment they got in the car, Charles appeared drunk, but he wasn't. He just didn't want to open his eyes and talk.
Mark was unaware of the situation. It was his first time seeing Charles in such a state.
As he drove, he asked Matt, "Mr. Green, how much did Mr. Lancelot drink tonight?"
"He didn't drink much," Matt replied.
"Not much? He's this drunk," Mark was slightly surprised as he said.
Matt glanced at Charles, a gentle smile curving his lips. "It isn't because of the wine, but because of his heart."
Mark instantly understood. Charles was overwhelmed by his emotions, not the alcohol.
"Did you come here on a business trip?" Matt asked.
"No, Mr. Lancelot came here to win back Ms. Murphy," Mark said earnestly, "He moved his office to the branch in Gedser."
Matt was slightly surprised and asked, "Do you know what happened between him and Daphne?"
Mark didn't answer immediately. He glanced in the rearview mirror. After seeing no objection from Charles, he decided to tell the truth.
"Mr. Lancelot thought Ms. Murphy would love him forever no matter what happened or how much he hurts her," Mark said vividly, "But he didn't expect that Ms. Murphy had learned a lesson from him and she decided not to fall in the same place twice."
After hearing Mark's words, Matt chuckled softly.
Charles was speechless. His already somber mood was further aggravated by Mark's words. He never seemed to have anything nice to say.
Half an hour later, Mark dropped them off at home.
While Matt was in the bathroom taking a shower, Charles, who was sitting on the sofa, called Mark over with a look of displeasure.
Mark appeared quite earnest, asking, "Mr. Lancelot, what is it?"
"What did you mean by what you said in the car?" Charles asked unpleasingly.
"Just what it sounded like," Mark replied with an innocent expression.
"Who told you that's what I think?" Charles fumed.
"Aren't you just relying on your good looks, confident that Ms. Murphy would be loath to part with you?" Mark said earnestly.
Charles felt even worse. He didn't want to see Mark for the moment. "Turn right and leave. I don't want to see you right now."
"Okay." Mark turned and left.
Staring at the closed door, Charles' chest was a tangle of complex emotions.
Perhaps emboldened by the alcohol or for some other reason, he took out his phone and opened Daphne's Facebook. He typed "I'm sorry" in the chat box. His finger hovered over the send button, but he hesitated. In the end, he deleted it and sent "Are you there?" instead.
He waited for a few minutes, which felt like centuries. When Daphne didn't reply, he found her number and pressed the call button. This time, he didn't hang up.
Daphne was replying to Gavin's message when she saw his call. Without any hesitation, she hung up.
However, Charles was particularly persistent tonight.
Daphne hung up on him twice, but he kept calling. On the third call, she initially planned to hang up again but decided to answer, thinking he might keep calling.
She didn't angrily scold him as she used to. Instead, she asked calmly, "What do you want?"
After she spoke, Charles didn't say anything. After a second or two, Daphne was about to hang up.
Just then, Charles spoke, "Do you hate me?"
Daphne was stunned. She had no idea why he was bringing this up. "If you have something to say, just say it. I'm busy."
She had considered blocking him but didn't want Charles to keep bothering her, forcing her to unblock him.
"If it weren't for what happened with Kayla, would we still be happy now?" Charles' voice was lower than usual.
Daphne didn't answer. Such hypothetical questions were meaningless.
She simply said, "I don't have time for idle chat. If you called just to talk about irrelevant things, I'm hanging up."
Charles said nothing.
Daphne hung up, and this time, Charles didn't call back.
Staring at the disconnected call, any small hope he had vanished.
This call had been a test. Now he knew the result.
As for Daphne, she felt calm after hanging up, unaffected by Charles.
Gavin, seemingly impatient with her slow replies, called her directly to get to the point. "Have you decided about the team-building event? Are you going?"
"No," Daphne replied without hesitation. She wasn't interested in such crowded events. Besides, she was only a part-time investment advisor for the Murphy Group, not a full-time employee.
