Chapter 595 The Only One I've Ever Had Feelings for
"You've got a real talent for picking 'em, as always," Evelyn said with a knowing smile. "If it were up to me, I'd only go for Jesse. No one else would do."
"Jesse, got anything to say about what Elara just mentioned?" Aria chimed in, stirring the pot.
"Yeah, I do," Jesse replied, locking eyes with Elara.
Everyone was on the edge of their seats. This could only mean one of two things. Either Jesse was some big shot with tons of power, making Elara just another fling, or he was an actor she hired. Either way, their mission for today was accomplished.
"What?" Stella asked, her curiosity piqued.
Jesse's gaze softened as he looked at Elara. "I'm really glad she didn't decide to ditch me."
Everyone was floored. What was happening?
"Forgot to mention, Jesse's the guy I've had a crush on forever. I finally got him to notice me a few days ago," Elara added, her eyes brimming with emotion.
The group, still trying to wrap their heads around it, was even more confused. For a while, everyone was still questioning if this was real.
Half an hour later, they were still chatting and drinking. Elara stuck to juice the whole time. She went to the restroom, and Evelyn trailed behind her.
Seeing Evelyn follow, Elara didn't hold back. "Do you really need to be my shadow? Do you have to follow me everywhere?"
"It's a public restroom, Elara" Evelyn shot back.
Elara ignored her and went to open the stall door.
Evelyn blocked her way, arms crossed, looking amused. "Jesse's not just some regular guy, is he?"
"What's it to you?" Elara pushed past her and went in.
Evelyn repositioned herself outside the stall. She kept talking through the door, "If he wasn't special, would you have liked him for so long?"
Elara stayed silent. But with Evelyn outside, it was hard to go about her business.
"Come on," Evelyn pressed. "What's his deal that makes him worth your time?"
"If you're that curious, ask him yourself," Elara snapped, vowing never to go to the restroom with Evelyn again. "You're pretty and charming; I'm sure he'll spill the beans."
"Don't butter me up," Evelyn said, genuinely interested in Jesse. "Even if you compliment me, I'm telling you, I'm set on getting your boyfriend."
"So?" Elara replied, not taking the bait. Jesse wasn't someone who could be easily swayed.
Evelyn was taken aback by Elara's calmness. "You don't believe me, do you?"
"I do. Why wouldn't I?" Elara said, washing her hands. "You're gorgeous; plenty of guys would love to be your boyfriend."
But Jesse wasn't one of them.
Evelyn caught the subtext. "I know you don't believe me. You think you can keep him just because you're pretty."
Elara grabbed some toilet paper and dried her hands.
"But there are some things you, with zero dating experience, just don't get," Evelyn said, flipping her hair with a smug smile. "Guys care about more than just looks; they care about, you know, skills in bed too."
"Yeah, you're a pro," Elara replied seriously. "How about you and your boyfriend give me a live demo sometime? I'll pay for the lesson."
Evelyn's face flashed with anger, but she quickly regained her composure, giving Elara a once-over. "Besides your looks, all you've got is your sharp tongue. When I take your boyfriend, you'll be the one crying."
"Are you done?" Elara snapped, fed up. She couldn't understand where Evelyn got her confidence. "If you're done, move. I need to get out."
Elara knew a bit about this social circle and understood that some men were as easily swayed as Evelyn suggested. But most men here liked to be in control.
'Evelyn is so naive,' Elara thought to herself.
When Elara and Evelyn returned to the room, the others looked over, sensing the tension between them.
Thinking about what Evelyn had just said, Elara worried she might try something shady with Jesse. So she announced, "You guys have fun. Jesse and I have to go. Put the bill on my tab."
"Why the rush?" Evelyn was the first to respond. "I was just joking. I won't really steal your boyfriend."
"Stay a bit longer. Let's play a game."
"We haven't even gotten to know your boyfriend yet."
"Exactly."
Everyone chimed in.
Seeing Jesse stand up too, Evelyn knew they were serious about leaving. She smiled and said, "You can go, but according to the rules, your boyfriend has to answer three truth questions."
"When did that become a rule?" Elara wanted to scream.
Jesse squeezed her hand, gave her a reassuring look, and said, "Go ahead."
Jesse had overheard the restroom conversation between Elara and Evelyn. Since this group wanted to embarrass Elara, Jesse decided to step in. He also wanted to show them that he was there to protect her.
"Your boyfriend's straightforward," Evelyn remarked, clearly trying to provoke Elara. Her first question was blunt. "First question, how many girlfriends have you had before Elara? Include hookups."
"And it has to be the truth," Aria added.
Jesse's face remained impassive, as cold as ever. "I didn't date anyone before Elara."
"That's no fun," Evelyn said, not buying it.
The handsome guys around Evelyn had used their looks to hook up with countless girls. Jesse was even better looking; how could he not have had any flings?
"It has to be the truth," Stella emphasized.
"Elara is the only girlfriend I've ever had, and the only one I've ever had feelings for," Jesse said clearly, his demeanor icy.
Everyone was stunned into silence.
Elara happily squeezed Jesse's hand, her eyes sparkling with joy.
Evelyn suppressed her emotions, keeping her calm smile as she asked, "Second question, what company do you work for and what's your position?"
