Chapter 563 Why Don't You Dare to Admit It

"What are you up to?" Elara asked, confused by Jesse's weird behavior.

Jesse's eyes flicked around, and he shrugged, "Just keeping some space, you know."

"Cut the act," Elara said, stepping closer. "Why didn't you say that when I kissed you earlier?"

"And another thing," she added.

"What?" Jesse's mind was all over the place.

"If I'm not wrong, you seemed to enjoy it," Elara guessed boldly, locking eyes with him. "So, you like me."

"No," Jesse denied quickly.

"Why won't you admit it?" Elara pressed.

Jesse's hands fidgeted, and he pressed his lips together before saying calmly, "I don't like you."

"If you really didn't like me, you would've pushed me away or looked disgusted when I kissed you," Elara said, trying to get him to admit it. "Didn't you say only Daphne and I are exceptions in your life?"

Jesse instinctively looked at her.

Elara asked, "If Daphne were single and she kissed you, would you just stand there and let her?"

Jesse didn't need to think; he knew he wouldn't. He'd instinctively pull away.

"You wouldn't," Elara guessed his thoughts, speaking clearly, "because Daphne is like family to you. You can pretend to be her boyfriend, but you can't be intimate with her."

Jesse stayed silent.

Elara was right.

But he was different from Elara; she deserved someone better.

"That's just your thinking," Jesse said, forcing the words out, "As long as Ms. Murphy needs me, I can do anything."

Elara's fists clenched. Was he trying to make her mad?

"Are you sure?" Elara asked.

Jesse nodded seriously, "I'm sure."

"Fine, I'll call her now. I heard she's been arguing with Mr. Reynolds and needs some comfort," Elara said, pulling out her phone. "You talk to her."

Normally, wouldn't Elara just think Jesse was a jerk and leave?

"Hello, Elara," Daphne's voice came through the phone.

"Hi, Daphne," Elara greeted.

"What's up?" Daphne asked.

"Jesse needs to talk to you but he's too shy to call," Elara lied smoothly. "So I'm calling for him."

Daphne, catching on, asked, "Is Jesse with you?"

"Yes," Elara handed the phone over.

Jesse felt like his hand weighed a ton, but he still spoke, "Hello, Ms. Murphy."

"What's up?" Daphne's voice was calm.

"How are things with you and Benjamin?" Jesse asked.

"Pretty good," Daphne replied.

"That's all," Jesse said. "Take care, I won't bother you anymore. Goodbye."

He hung up and looked at Elara, feeling a bit annoyed.

Elara couldn't read his expression and just asked, "Do you still mean what you said earlier?"

"I don't like you," Jesse insisted, feeling guilty inside, "All my reactions were just because I promised to be your boyfriend."

"Can you be more sincere?" Elara asked, confused by Jesse's coldness.

Jesse replied, "This is how I really feel."

"So, if I hadn't asked you to pretend to be my boyfriend, you wouldn't have let me kiss you, right?" Elara pressed.

Jesse nodded. "Right."

Elara sighed, "Fine, I don't need you to pretend anymore."

"Okay," Jesse responded, still calm and emotionless.

Elara felt both angry and hurt. She stood on tiptoe, wrapped her arms around his neck, and tried to kiss him.

This time, Jesse stopped her. "It's not appropriate."

"Jesse!" Elara was getting frustrated.

No matter what she said, Jesse wouldn't budge. He just stood there, blocking her like a robot.

"Why won't you admit you like me? Is there something wrong with me, or did I do something to upset you?" Elara asked, exasperated.

"No," Jesse answered calmly.

"Then you must have some concerns," Elara insisted.

"No concerns, I just don't have feelings for you," Jesse said, trying to convince himself it was better to end it now. "Thank you for liking me."

Elara's heart felt like it was breaking.

"Are you rejecting me?" she asked, locking eyes with him.

"Yes," Jesse confirmed.

"Fine," Elara said, pulling out her phone and tapping it a few times before putting it to her ear.

Jesse saw her eyes were slightly red and wanted to comfort her, but he couldn't.

"Willie," Elara said into the phone, sounding angry, "Didn't you want to marry me? Get the documents ready. I'll marry you at 9 AM tomorrow."

"No," Jesse frowned and tried to grab her phone.

Elara pulled away, not even looking at him. She continued speaking into the phone, "You can break up with your girlfriends if you want, or keep in touch with them; I won't care."

"Okay," she said, glancing at her phone before turning off the screen.

After that, Elara went to the bedroom and started packing her suitcase.

Jesse followed her, watching as she packed clothes into the suitcase. He felt a bit panicked. "What are you doing?"

"Thank you for taking care of me these past few days. Since you don't like me, there's no need for me to stay here and bother you," Elara said, suddenly very polite, her smile distant. "After I marry Willie tomorrow, I'll probably move in with him."

"But you don't have feelings for him," Jesse said, confused.

"Yes, but since you don't like me, I'll find someone with a similar family background," Elara explained seriously. "My dad and Harold are old friends, and they have a good relationship. I won't be wronged if I marry him."

Jesse's hands froze at his sides.

He wanted to tell Elara not to marry Willie; a guy who couldn't even cleanly break up with his exes didn't deserve her.

But he knew if he said that, Elara would definitely respond, "If you don't like me, don't interfere with my affairs."
