Chapter 468 You Want Me to Propose to You
"Yo, there's only one thing that'd make Benjamin come to you and swear you to secrecy," Daphne said, her brain working overtime.
Daisy raised an eyebrow, "And what's that?"
Benjamin, on the other hand, was sweating bullets. He knew Daphne was onto him.
"Proposing," Daphne said, eyes locked on Daisy. "Am I right?"
She didn't even glance at Benjamin 'cause she knew he could fake it like a pro. Dude was impossible to read.
But Daphne forgot one thing: Daisy was a killer actress too.
Daisy was caught off guard by Daphne's guess, but she just smiled and kept her mouth shut. This threw Daphne off. 'Am I wrong?'"Do you want me to propose that badly?" Benjamin relaxed when he saw Daisy playing it cool, his vibe totally chill.
Wait, was it not a proposal? Daphne's eyes darted between them. If it wasn't a proposal, then what the heck was it?
"After lunch, I'll take you to pick out a ring," Benjamin said, acting so smooth that Daphne was totally lost. "Once we get the ring, I'll pick a day to pop the question."
Daphne bit her lip, and the whole idea of Benjamin planning a proposal went out the window.
"What kind of proposal scene do you like?" Benjamin asked again.
"If it's not a proposal, then what were you talking about?" Daphne felt like a total idiot.
Logically, the only reason Benjamin would come to Daisy, besides proposing, would be to talk marriage, especially since Daisy was her buddy.
Daphne wasn't pregnant, didn't have a kid, so he wouldn't be asking for baby advice. And if it was about kids, why the secrecy?
Daisy and Benjamin exchanged a look. Daisy stayed quiet, leaving it to Benjamin to handle.
"You'll find out soon enough," Benjamin said, standing up and messing up her hair.
Daphne was still racking her brain, but she couldn't crack it.
Benjamin took her hand, his lazy, deep voice like honey. "Go pack a bit. After lunch, we'll go ring shopping."
"You go ahead. Daisy and I need to chat," Daphne said, determined to get some answers from Daisy, her face more serious than usual. "Don't wait for me for lunch."
"Are we still going ring shopping this afternoon?"
"No rush; we can go later."
Seeing she was set on staying, Benjamin didn't push it.
If Daphne wanted to stay and grill Daisy, let her. She wouldn't get anything out of her anyway.
Leaving the two friends to their chat, Benjamin walked outside and bumped into Austin.
Benjamin's usual laid-back look barely spared a glance on Austin before he walked off.
No hello, nothing, like they were total strangers.
Austin watched him go, and once Benjamin was out of sight, he pulled out his phone and sent a text: [Got some bad news for you.]
Charles replied: [What?]
Austin started typing but then deleted it, thinking it was too harsh.
Austin had swung by to see Daisy and Molly, but he caught wind of Benjamin talking about popping the question to Daphne. Just as he was about to eavesdrop more, he saw Daphne heading over, so he ducked out to avoid any drama. When he finally emerged, he bumped into Benjamin.
Austin didn't text back for ages, so Charles hit him with another question mark.
Knowing Austin was visiting Daisy today, Charles had been glued to his phone, waiting for any scoop. Given his situation with Daphne, what could be so bad? After waiting a bit longer with no word from Austin, Charles was getting antsy.
Charles tried to put his phone down and focus on work, but his mind was all over the place, thinking about Daphne. Without a reply from Austin, he couldn't get his head straight.
When Mark came to see him, he saw Charles in this state and didn't need to guess—it was definitely about Daphne.
"Mr. Lancelot, there's a project in Gedser on the 12th that needs your personal touch," Mark reported. "Should I reschedule it?"
Gedser was a mixed bag for Charles, full of both good and bad vibes.
Lately, under Brian's pressure, Charles had been sleeping okay, but his appetite was still shot.
If he went to Gedser and accidentally ran into Daphne, Mark worried that Charles's bottled-up feelings would spill over.
"No need," Charles said, his face colder than usual. "I'll go."
Mark pressed his lips together but didn't argue. It was just a project meeting; it shouldn't be so coincidental that he'd run into Daphne.
Seeing Mark still standing there, Charles, feeling irritated, asked, "Anything else?"
"Yeah."
"Spit it out."
"I found out why Ms. Murphy moved," Mark said, hoping to ease Charles's mind.
Charles's hand froze on the keyboard, his eyes darkening.
Before Charles could speak, Mark continued, "She didn't move because of you. She moved to a villa with Benjamin for convenience."
He had learned this from asking Jesse.
Charles felt a sharp pain in his heart. This was worse than if she had moved to avoid him.
"Mr. Lancelot?" Mark noticed something off in Charles's expression and called out tentatively.
"I got it," Charles said in a low voice, his face unreadable. "You can go now."
Mark said okay and left, glancing back with a complicated feeling.
Charles's emotions were becoming harder to read. Unlike before, he wasn't as quick to anger and didn't exude coldness. He seemed to have matured suddenly.
But at the same time, Charles's heart had closed off, and no one could open it but himself.
The entire morning, Charles did nothing but sit in his chair, waiting for a message from Austin. He wanted to urge him but decided against it after much thought.
As for Austin, unsure of how to respond to Charles, he went to find Daisy, planning to get more details from her after Daphne left.
Daisy didn't say anything about his appearance, and Daphne didn't interfere.
By noon, Daphne had lunch there. She wanted to play with Molly afterward, but Molly had fallen asleep during their meal.
Not wanting to hang around longer, she went back to find Benjamin.
