Chapter 19 Your Sister-in-law is Gone
Charles paused for a moment.
His gaze shifted away from Daphne, revealing a sense of composure and complexity. "What do you mean?"
"Do you really like Miss Baker, or is it just your past obsession and unwillingness to let go of that relationship?" Mark asked with depth. "Although it has only been two years, are you certain that Miss Baker is still the same person as before?"
"What are you trying to say?" Charles was asked a rather dull question.
"I am worried that you will mix up your emotions," Mark acted as an emotional advisor, "Mrs…. Miss Lancelot."
Charles didn't respond.
He was well aware of his affection for Kayla. Even now, just thinking back to her past tenderness and companionship could calm his heart and help him deal with things.
If they hadn't broken up before, they might have been married by now.
"In fact, there is a simple and direct way to test whether you like Miss Baker or not," Mark's lips curved with a hint of unconcealed excitement, "I wonder if you're willing to give it a try?"
Charles looked at him, "What?"
"Being attracted to someone is impulsive," Mark said in a low voice, only audible to the two of them, "think about whether you have any sexual desires for Miss Baker."
Mark whispered, "Do you?"
No, that was Charles' initial reaction.
Whether it was in the past or now, he had never had such thoughts about Kayla.
He only wanted to take good care of her and make her live a happy life.
It was Daphne...
Thinking of this, Charles frowned and fixed his gaze on Mark, directly rejecting his words, "Don't apply your theories to other people. What works for you doesn't necessarily work for me."
Mark fell silent, understanding his boss's feelings.
He seemed to be envisioning a month later when Mrs. Lancelot would obtain the divorce certificate and Charles would be left alone in the mansion, living a life of reminiscence.
Rex was right, his boss needed some setbacks.
"I have already moved all my things," Daphne said to Charles after finishing her work, "after the waiting period is over, I will contact you to get the divorce certificate."
"Wait," Charles called out to her.
Daphne turned back.
Charles looked at the packed moving boxes on the moving company's truck and carefully considered his words before speaking, "Mark will take you there, and the moving truck can't accommodate everyone."
"Alright," Daphne didn't refuse.
She got into the car.
Just as Mark was about to leave, the other car door opened, and Charles's tall figure sat in, making the spacious car suddenly narrow.
Daphne furrowed her brows, "Why did you get in?"
"On the way to the company," Charles calmly explained.
Daphne stayed silent.
In her opinion, Charles probably came up because he was worried that she might run away before getting a divorce. He specially got in the car to see where she was staying.
She wasn't worried that he would cause trouble once he knew her address. She would only stay in Ivrea City for one more month before returning to Gedser.
Even if she were to come back to Ivrea City in the future, it would be very rare.
Charles didn't know about her thoughts. He just wanted to know where she lived and what the environment was like. They remained silent throughout the journey.
An hour later, they arrived at a residential area in the outskirts of Ivrea City. Charles frowned slightly as he looked at the distant location from the city center.
"Do you live here?" he asked.
"Yeah," Daphne nodded.
This place was chosen by her after viewing all the real estate properties in Ivrea City. It was far from the bustling city and well-suited for living.
Charles couldn't understand her thoughts, so he carefully chose his words and said, "You can move to the villa I bought you now. It will be your property after the divorce."
"This place is fine," Daphne replied without elaborating.
Though Charles didn't agree with her, since she insisted, he didn't say anything more.
Daphne got out of the car outside the residential area, accompanied by the moving company staff she hired.
Mark remained seated beside Charles and asked, "Boss, should we return to the company now?"
Charles cast him a glance.
"?"
What did that mean? Why couldn't he understand?
"Daphne is my wife now," Charles said coldly, not displaying his emotions. "Are you just going to watch her move alone?"
With a simple sentence, Mark immediately understood his meaning.
A faint smile curved his lips as he said, "Boss, don't worry, I will safely deliver Mrs. Lancelot and those things to her new home."
"Hurry up," Charles urged.
Mark quickly got out of the car and rushed towards Daphne. He didn't understand why Mr. Lancelot couldn't ask Mrs. Lancelot about her address himself and had to use this flimsy excuse to make him do it.
Ten minutes later, Mark returned.
He informed Charles of the floor and door number where Daphne was located.
Charles didn't show any expression, simply instructing him to drive back to the company and prepare the documents for his upcoming business trip.
As for Daphne, she understood that Mark accompanying her upstairs was Charles's intention.
She also knew his purpose behind it, which was to prevent her from running away halfway, not collecting the divorce certificate, and leaving him unable to be openly with Kayla.
She didn't confront him about it and focused on packing her things.
An hour later, she had neatly organized and packed all her belongings.
Just as she was about to order lunch, a phone call disrupted her plans. Seeing the words "dummy dad" flashing on the screen, her initial instinct was to hang up.
However, after hanging up, the call came through again.
Normally, if she hung up once, the other person wouldn't call again. This was an unspoken agreement between them after their relationship had soured.
Seeing the still vibrating phone, Daphne paused for a moment before reluctantly answering in the same indifferent tone, "What's up?"
"Lydia is in trouble," the hoarse voice on the other end said.
Daphne didn't know how she hung up the phone, or how she ended up at the door. All she knew was that when she came to her senses, she was already in a taxi heading to the airport.
Looking at the buildings receding outside the window, her mind was filled with the words her dad said on the phone - Lydia's arm was broken, bleeding from her head, and she was unconscious when taken to the hospital.
That was her sister.
The most important person to her, besides her mom.
"Could you please go faster?" Daphne's heart raced.
