Chapter 472 This Damn Fate

Hazel totally got why Gavin was so against blind dates.

If she had to deal with that nonsense for ages, she'd probably do the same—just shut down everyone, good or bad, right off the bat.

Gavin looked confused. "What?"

"Your Facebook," Hazel said, taking her time.

Gavin caught on quick, unlocked his phone, and handed it over.

They friended each other.

Worried he was just playing along, Hazel added, "If after a while you think this isn't working, just tell me straight up and unfriend me."

"Alright." Gavin was a bit thrown but nodded.

He wasn't big on unfriending people, but he went with it.

"Didn't you say you are going shopping?" Gavin, feeling a bit bad for lying earlier, offered, "I can give you a ride."

"No need," Hazel said softly. "But hey, if you're free, wanna catch a musical tomorrow? No worries if you're busy."

"Uh..." Gavin hesitated but then said, "Sure, I'm free."

It was the weekend, after all, no work.

Hazel felt a bit better and left in her family's car after giving them a nod.

Once she was gone, Gavin turned to Daphne, "Why'd you out me like that? I've got my pride, you know."

"I'll buy you dinner."

"One dinner? Really?"

"Two dinners."

"Do I look like I can't afford food?"

"A month."

"Deal!" Gavin agreed instantly. "No take-backs."

Daphne just hummed, thinking he was being a total kid.

"In the future, if you don't like someone, just say so. No need to lie," Daphne advised, worried about his reckless ways. "And if you hate blind dates, just be upfront."

Gavin scratched his head. "This was my first blind date. I'm clueless."

He had no idea what his mom was thinking, setting him up with back-to-back dates!

He dodged yesterday's and this morning's, but then his mom called and chewed him out, saying if he skipped this one, he should not bother coming back home.

So, Gavin had no choice but to show up.

"How about you come home with me tonight and tell Mom and Dad to stop with the blind dates?" Gavin suggested, testing the waters. "They listen to you."

In the whole family, except for Sean, everyone adored Daphne.

Her word was gold.

Daphne gave him a look.

"Don't tell me you won't," Gavin said bluntly. "I'm your brother."

"You've been single forever; it's time you found a girlfriend," Daphne said after a pause.

Gavin got all dramatic. "I've been single because I've been busting my butt managing the Murphy Group. If I wasn't so career-focused, I'd have grandkids by now."

"Sure," Daphne replied, totally not buying it.

"Daphne," Gavin pleaded.

"Go fall in love; I'll handle the Murphy Group," Daphne suddenly said.

Gavin was floored. "Are you serious?"

"Yeah," Daphne said, all serious. "I don't want to hold you back from being happy, so I'm letting you off the hook."

Gavin wasn't thrilled. Before, he didn't want to manage because he wanted to have fun. Now, if he really stepped down from the Murphy Group, he couldn't use work as an excuse to dodge the blind dates.

"Forget it. I can't let my sister work herself to death," Gavin said smoothly. "You just focus on your thing with Benjamin. Plus, I promised to help you out for a few more years; I don't want to waste my efforts."

Daphne knew he was just making excuses, but she also wanted Gavin to find love on his own terms, not through endless blind dates.

"I can talk to your parents," Daphne offered. "But you gotta promise me two things."

"Name 'em!"

Gavin perked up instantly.

Daphne took her time, "First, give the girl you just met a fair shot. Don't judge her just 'cause it was a blind date."

"No problem," Gavin agreed without hesitation.

"Second, help me with something on Monday," Daphne said. "And you can't tell anyone without my say-so."

"Deal!"

Gavin agreed again.

He knew whatever Daphne needed wouldn't be anything bad, so he just went with it.

"Alright, I'll call your parents later," Daphne promised. "And tell them..."

"Wait." Gavin suddenly had a lightbulb moment. "Did you say Monday?"

"Yeah."

"What time?"

"In the evening," Daphne replied.

"What do you need me to do?" Gavin asked.

'Next Monday's the 12th, isn't Benjamin planning to propose to Daphne that night? Hasn't Benjamin arranged anyone to take Daphne out yet? Or is what Daphne needs my help with related to this?'

"I'm planning to propose to Benjamin that night," Daphne told Gavin, since he already knew about it.

It was supposed to be at the end of May, but they had to tweak the fireworks and drones, so it got pushed back.

Gavin was floored. "You're proposing that night too?"

When Benjamin told him about his proposal, he thought Daphne had ditched her plan since she mentioned the end of May.

But now, they were both proposing on the same day.

"Too?" Daphne caught the key word.

Gavin froze for a second, then realized Daphne didn't know about Benjamin's plan, and Benjamin had sworn them all to secrecy.

"A buddy of mine is proposing that night too, and he asked for my help." Gavin felt his brain short-circuiting. "Does Benjamin know about your proposal?"

"No."

This was some crazy fate. They really were a perfect match.

The engagement rings were custom-made together, and now even the proposals were on the same day.

"How about you push your proposal back a day?" Gavin still hoped Benjamin's proposal would go off without a hitch. "After I help my buddy on the 12th, I'll come help you."

"No." Daphne didn't push it. "If you're busy, go ahead. I'll talk it over with Lydia."

If that didn't work, she'd turn to Kevin and the others.

Gavin's lips pressed into a thin line. He wanted to say that asking Lydia wouldn't help either.
