Chapter 397 Sooner or Later, This Guy Will Drive Him Crazy
"You got the guts to bring this up," Chris said, still shivering at the memory of his mom chasing him around. "Who did you get to fix the virus on my phone? I asked a bunch of people, and none of them could crack it."
Benjamin's eyes sparkled with amusement as he replied coolly, "An expert."
"Yeah, no kidding it's an expert," Chris shot back, feeling like Benjamin had gotten way cockier since he started dating. "I'm asking who the person is."
"A hacker," Benjamin said.
Chris glared at him, thinking this convo was going nowhere. If this kept up, Benjamin would drive him nuts!
"You wait here for the others. I'm gonna check on Kevin," Chris said.
He was already plotting. Since Benjamin said it was a hacker, Kevin's skills must be top-notch. Why not have Kevin help him out?
When Chris found Kevin, he was chilling with Sierra. As Chris walked in, he overheard Kevin saying, "You don't look twenty-eight at all. I thought you were around Daphne's age."
"Do you always compliment girls like this?" Sierra asked, all innocent.
"Not really," Kevin said honestly. "Besides Daphne, you're the first girl I've complimented."
As for Emma and Zoey, they were always teasing each other, so compliments didn't really fit.
"I heard from Benjamin that you're a hacker?" Chris, thinking Kevin was kinda unreliable, walked over and cut into their chat.
"Sort of," Kevin said, downplaying it.
Even though Kevin's hacking skills weren't as good as Daphne's, they were still pretty solid, almost on par with Nina, who was just below Daphne.
Feeling chummy, Chris threw an arm around Kevin's shoulder. "How about doing me a solid?"
Chris then took Kevin to a room and had him crack the virus Benjamin had installed. Kevin got it done in no time.
Seeing this, Chris felt a glimmer of hope.
He asked Kevin to hang tight and went to his car to grab his virus-infected phone. He even asked Kevin, "There's a nasty virus in here. I've asked a bunch of hackers, and none of them could fix it. If you can help me out, I'll treat you to dinner."
Kevin took the phone and was about to use his computer to remove the virus when, surprise, the computer got infected!
Kevin looked puzzled.
"The last people who tried to fix the virus also got their computers infected," Chris said, coughing to hide his embarrassment since he had totally forgotten about this.
Kevin didn't say anything and kept typing code to crack the virus.
Half an hour later, his computer was back to normal, and the virus on Chris's phone was gone too.
After removing it, Kevin realized the virus was a prank program written by Daphne. It was harmless, which was why he could crack it. If Daphne had been serious, he wouldn't have stood a chance.
No one had ever cracked a serious virus created by Daphne, not even other top hackers.
"You..." Kevin started but stopped himself.
He initially wanted to ask how Chris had ticked off Daphne, but then he remembered Chris was Benjamin's friend. Daphne would never target their friends.
Chris now knew Kevin's skills were way better than anyone else he knew. "What's up?" he asked.
"Where did this virus come from?" Kevin asked.
"I dunno. It just showed up outta nowhere," Chris replied.
"Think carefully," Kevin said.
"Do you know something?" Chris caught on quick. "Do you know who put this virus on my phone?"
Kevin stayed silent, which was basically a yes.
Chris decided to cut to the chase. "The virus was planted by Benjamin to mess with me," he stated.
Kevin looked confused. "Benjamin?"
"Yeah."
Oh man, this was bad. Benjamin wanted to prank Chris, and now Kevin had helped him remove the virus. If Benjamin found out, he'd be in deep trouble!
"I just remembered that the virus on your phone isn't completely gone," Kevin quickly lied, trying to avoid any fallout. "Hand it over again."
Chris, not suspecting a thing, handed it over.
Kevin's fingers flew over the keyboard, quickly restoring Daphne's virus. To make it look legit, he even turned off Chris's phone.
"All set," Kevin said, handing the phone back. "I gotta go do something else. Check if there are any more issues."
He bolted out of there, leaving Chris no time to ask questions.
Kevin was super nervous. Restoring the virus shouldn't count as sabotaging Benjamin's plan, right?
He really didn't want to be punished with running laps, frog jumps, or any other brutal training.
Chris didn't think much of Kevin's weird behavior. Seeing the phone was off, he turned it on, planning to transfer his SIM card later.
As soon as he turned it on, the phone loudly proclaimed, "Mom, come hit me if you can! Too bad, you can't catch me, haha!"
Instantly, the phone's sound drew everyone's attention.
Chris cursed Kevin under his breath and quickly shut the phone down.
What was Kevin up to? He had fixed it earlier, so why was it acting up again?
Kevin had no clue about any of this and quickly returned to their meeting spot.
By the time he got there, most of the others had already arrived.
Evan noticed his sneaky behavior and raised an eyebrow. "Feeling guilty about something?"
"Of course not," Kevin denied, scratching his head, clearly uncomfortable. "Just checking where Benjamin and Daphne are. Aren't we supposed to set them up today?"
Evan adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses but didn't call him out. Once Chris arrived, they all went to have fun.
According to Benjamin's plan, Evan and Kevin were getting along well with Sierra.
Seeing this, Chris felt a bit awkward but pushed it down and went to chat with Emma and Zoey. After all, it was just talking; he could do that too.
However, Emma and Zoey didn't give him the time of day.
Their goal today was to set up Benjamin and Daphne, so they had no time to waste on Chris.
Emma and Zoey found a spot with a good view where they could see everyone. They sat in the sun and chatted with Daphne. "Daphne, have you thought about Benjamin?"
"What?" Daphne asked, puzzled.
"You know, him having a thing for you," Emma replied.
Daphne bit her lip, thinking about how to tell them she was already with Benjamin.
