Chapter 278 Daphne Isn't Enough, How About K?
Richard lifted his gaze, his indifferent eyes locking onto Brian.
It was like he was saying, "You're too naive."
Brian looked away, avoiding his stare. "You should leave."
"If you dare erase her from Charles's memory, she'll make your life hell," Richard said calmly, his expression unchanged.
Brian scoffed. "Just her?"
"Just her," Richard confirmed.
"I know Daphne is the eldest daughter of the Murphy family and has a wide network," Brian said dismissively. "But thinking she can make my life difficult is underestimating me."
If she were still Charles's wife, he might believe it a little.
The title of the eldest daughter of the Murphy family certainly carried weight, but to him, she was just another rich girl.
Richard stopped trying to guess the password and walked out.
Brian followed, not even sure why. He knew Richard didn't like him, but he couldn't stop himself.
"The eldest daughter of the Murphy family isn't enough, but what about K?" Richard said lazily as he reached the base's entrance, looking back.
Brian froze. K? A bad feeling surged in his heart. "You mean Daphne is K?"
Richard didn't answer, but his eyes said it all.
Brian was shocked. Was he joking?
"K is such a mysterious person; how could Daphne be K?" Brian felt his understanding of the world shatter. "Isn't she supposed to be a homebody who spends all day with her computer?"
With all the money in Daphne's family, she still became a hacker?
Shouldn't rich girls' childhoods be filled with socialite training courses? How did she have time to become a hacker?
"You're not joking?" Brian asked again.
Richard didn't answer, stepping out of the base, clearly done with the conversation.
Brian chased after him; he couldn't let Richard leave without clarifying this.
Just as Richard closed the car door and was about to leave, Brian opened the passenger door and got in.
"Get out," Richard's eyes turned icy.
Brian felt a sting but stayed thick-skinned. "I just want to ask a few questions. Once I understand, I'll leave. I promise not to bother you."
Richard's aura remained cold, keeping people at a distance.
"So, that night, it was Daphne who brought you to the hospital," Brian intended to ask about Daphne's identity but ended up saying this.
Richard remained silent.
All of Brian's complicated feelings vanished; his mind cleared. He had misunderstood. Richard was still single.
"How did you know Daphne is K?" Brian asked again.
"That's none of your business," Richard replied.
Brian fell silent.
Richard was still as impatient and unapproachable as ever.
"She asked me to tell you that if you hide anything from her and she finds out, she won't help you develop the precision equipment you need," Richard said more than usual. "She'll also blacklist you."
"She's so ruthless," Brian's mindset collapsed.
He could afford to offend the eldest daughter of the Murphy family; he didn't lack connections with the wealthy. But not K. K was not just a hacker but had many resources they couldn't touch. If he offended her, he might really be in trouble.
If he offended her, he might really be in trouble.
Richard noticed his reaction and glanced at him, already suspicious.
Brian was smart; he knew his reaction had given him away when Richard looked over. "Tell her I won't hide anything from her. Whatever she wants to know, I'll report. I hope she keeps her promise."
"What promise?" Richard was concerned about Daphne.
To him, Daphne was his friend and his sister.
Even though she was K, in his heart, she was just an ordinary girl, pure-hearted and simple.
"Nothing." Brian voluntarily got out of the passenger seat. "Safe travels."
Richard kept staring at him.
Brian was already a bit intimidated by Richard, not to mention the issue with K weighing on his mind. "Really, nothing!"
Richard continued to stare.
"Charles doesn't want anything to do with her, but she wants to know about Charles's condition. She said she'd give me a hundred million dollars for each piece of information," Brian finally gave in, hoping to mend his relationship with Richard.
Richard asked, "When did this happen?"
Brian replied, "A couple of days ago at the hospital. She came to me with a family consent form and said it in the hallway."
"I see," Richard said calmly, then closed the car door and drove away.
Brian couldn't make sense of Richard's actions and behavior.
After a while, he stopped thinking about it and focused on the fact that Daphne was K.
He looked at Daphne's phone number on his phone, hesitated outside the base for a while, and finally dialed.
Daphne was at Lancelot Group when she received the call.
She greeted Mark and answered the phone.
Brian said, "Ms. Murphy, good morning."
Daphne asked, "What do you want?"
"You hid your identity well," Brian said, returning to his cunning business demeanor, smiling. "If you had told me you were K earlier, I would have given you any information for free. Why spend money?"
Daphne's tone grew colder. "Okay."
Brian paused. What did she mean?
"I'm K," Daphne introduced herself.
Brian's lips twitched. Wasn't K supposed to be indifferent to money?
Based on her previous behavior, she should have said she would pay him, and they would trade fairly.
Was Richard lying to him?
Daphne didn't hear anything from the other end and asked, "Do you have anything else? If not, I'll hang up."
"Wait." Brian wanted to confirm her identity again. "When will you transfer the ten million dollars you promised in your last email to my account?"
"Your memory and vision are really poor. It's hard for me to trust you with Charles's treatment." Daphne knew he was testing her identity.
"I was joking," Brian felt he had lost out. "You go ahead; I'll check on Charles."
He quickly hung up, wishing he could slap himself.
Why did he say he didn't need her money?
Now, one piece of information: a hundred million dollars were gone.
Daphne looked at the hung-up call and was about to continue her conversation with Mark when Richard's call came in.
He always got straight to the point. "Brian must have hidden something from you. I didn't see Charles."
