Chapter 269 I Think Charles Might Be In Danger.
"I've got something to take care of. You head back," Daphne said, sounding distant.
Nina stayed put, practically glued to Daphne.
Daphne didn't have time for her. She started digging into the whole Brian and Charles situation. Soon enough, she hit a wall—a system she had designed years ago.
When she sold that system, she locked herself out of it. The buyers didn't want her snooping around their private info.
Cracking her own system would be easy, but as a pro, she couldn't just hack it.
While mulling it over, she made a call.
Mark, Charles's assistant, might know something.
"Ms. Murphy?" Mark sounded surprised.
"Yeah, it's me," Daphne cut to the chase. "I need to ask you about Charles. If it's a problem, you don't have to answer."
"Go ahead," Mark replied.
"Has Charles been in touch with any shady folks or made any weird deals lately?" Daphne asked.
"Yeah..." Mark didn't hold back.
Daphne's heart skipped a beat. "Who? What did he say?"
"Not sure who exactly," Mark said, recalling how odd Charles had been acting. "After he talked to you that day, he called someone else. His first question was if what they said before still stood."
"What do you mean?" Daphne sensed something serious.
"I don't know," Mark admitted, still worried about Charles. "But after that, Mr. Lancelot asked that person to do something for him and promised to fulfill their previous request if they did."
Daphne thought about Brian's interrupted conversation with Charles.
Brian had said, "I have to thank you; if it weren't for you..."
"Did Charles ask that person to save me?" Daphne asked.
"How did you know?" Mark was shocked.
Only he and Charles were there at the time. Even Justin showed up later.
Wait! The lawyer, the will.
A bad feeling hit Mark.
With a mix of worry and fear, he asked, "Ms. Murphy, is Mr. Lancelot in trouble?"
"He had a high fever," Daphne admitted. "After getting off the yacht, Brian took him. But don't worry. Brian has top-notch medical resources. Charles will be fine."
"That's a relief," Mark said, feeling a bit better.
Daphne wanted to ask Mark to call Charles, but she hesitated, not wanting to interfere.
When Charles asked her to leave, it seemed he didn't want her involved.
"By the way, Ms. Murphy," Mark said, thinking about the will. "I think he might be in danger."
"What do you mean?" Daphne asked.
Mark came clean. "After that call, Mr. Lancelot had Mr. Nelson draft a will, arranging all his assets."
He didn't say who the assets were for. If he did, Charles would definitely come after him.
"A will?" Daphne was stunned.
"Yeah," Mark confirmed.
Daphne's heart sank. Charles wouldn't draft a will unless he thought something might happen to him, and doing it right after that call meant it was tied to Brian.
"Don't tell Marcus about this yet. Keep an eye on the company," Daphne decided quickly. "I'll handle the rest."
If Charles really made a deal with Brian for her, that was incredibly foolish. Brian wasn't the type to do anything without a significant payoff.
Charles, you idiot.
"Okay," Mark agreed.
The call ended, and Daphne took a moment to calm down.
Nina saw her come in from the balcony with a serious expression. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Daphne said, not wanting to explain. "I've got some things to handle. Find something to do, and don't intrude into other people's homes without permission."
"I'll go with you!" Nina blurted out.
Daphne just looked at her, saying nothing.
Nina backed down immediately. "Then you have to find me when you get back. I still need to learn from you."
"Okay," Daphne said, starting to make arrangements. Seeing she was really busy, Nina reluctantly left.
Kayla was free now, so Daphne didn't need to worry about her. As for the company, Jesse was there.
Thinking of this, Daphne called Jesse, roughly telling him to keep an eye on the company as she would be busy for a while.
Jesse's first question was, "Ms. Murphy, are you getting married?"
"No," Daphne rubbed her forehead and briefly explained, "I have some personal matters to attend to. Handle the company affairs as you see fit. As for Benjamin, observe what he's good at and assign him tasks accordingly."
"Okay," Jesse agreed.
"Alright," Daphne felt reassured.
As she was about to hang up, Jesse stopped her. "Ms. Murphy."
"What?" Daphne asked.
"Nothing, just come back soon," Jesse said. "It's going to get colder. Remember to bring warm clothes. If you need anything, let me know; I'll prepare it for you."
"Okay," Daphne felt a bit more relaxed.
She was often grateful to have Jesse by her side. Whenever something came up, he would manage the company while she handled her matters.
The call ended. She glanced at the time; it was already 8 PM.
Just as she was thinking of getting something to eat, there was a knock on the door.
She thought Nina had left something behind and went to open the door, only to see Benjamin standing there, with a faint smell of food in the air.
"Benjamin?" She was surprised, not knowing why he was there at this hour.
Benjamin didn't come in. He just said, "Come over for dinner."
"What?" Daphne asked.
"Don't just stand there. Even if you're busy, you can't forget to eat," Benjamin said.
Daphne wanted to refuse, thinking he took Lydia's joke seriously. But before she could say anything, Benjamin had already pulled her over.
At the dining table, looking at the prepared dishes, she realized one thing.
Whether she refused or not, Benjamin would have brought her over anyway.
