Chapter 632 Why Did You Hang Up on Me?

"Is there a problem? Just say it," Charles said, his lips barely moving, eyes locked in serious focus.

"Why do you want to make Diana your goddaughter?" Daphne asked, feeling a mix of emotions.

Charles had seen this coming. He gave his rehearsed answer, "I want someone to be there for me when I'm old."

Daphne and Benjamin exchanged puzzled looks, sensing something was off.

"Aren't you planning to get married and have kids?" Daphne asked, unsure how to express her feelings.

"Not right now," Charles replied bluntly. "My last marriage didn't go well, and I don't want to hurt anyone else."

Charles had learned his lesson. If you still had feelings for someone, it wasn't fair to let someone new into your life.

Even though he could let go of his past now, if Daphne ever got into trouble and he had to choose between her and a new partner, he'd pick Daphne without a second thought.

So, it was better not to start anything new.

"Don't say that," Daphne said, having moved on from the past but still feeling complicated about Charles. "Before Kayla showed up, you were a good husband."

Charles paused, then said, "No."

"What?"

"Not good enough," Charles said.

Back then, he took care of Daphne out of duty. Looking back, he realized he didn't love her then; it was through their daily life that he fell for her. But by then, it was too late.

"I'm not staying single because of you," Charles guessed what Daphne was thinking and lied casually, "I just want to be alone."

Diana didn't quite get it and looked up at Charles, saying, "Charles."

"What's up?" Charles responded gently.

"What was your relationship with my mom before?" Diana asked innocently.

From the adults' talk, she sensed something unusual between Daphne and Charles but didn't know what.

Charles ruffled her hair. "We were good friends who had some arguments."

Diana nodded.

Charles turned back to Daphne and Benjamin, "Have you decided?"

"Diana," Benjamin didn't decide for her, his voice calm and gentle, "Do you want Charles to be your godfather?"

"Yes!" Diana said without hesitation.

"Why?" Daphne asked her.

"Because Charles is really nice to me, cares for me like a dad, and is gentle like you," Diana said, snuggling into Daphne's arms, looking up with big eyes, "I like him."

"Alright," Daphne agreed, realizing she couldn't stop this. With neither Charles nor Diana objecting, there was no reason to interfere.

"You agreed?" Charles was surprised it went so smoothly.

"No reason to disagree," Daphne said, knowing Charles was reliable now and feeling at ease. "We'll have a ceremony for you two in a couple of days."

"I'll handle it," Charles offered.

Daphne didn't argue.

Later that night, after giving Diana a bath and tucking her in, Daphne headed back to the living room where Charles and Benjamin were deep into a chess game.

Daphne brought some fruit from the kitchen and sat next to Benjamin, watching the intense match unfold.

They were pretty evenly matched.

Half an hour later, it ended in a draw.

"I need to talk to Daphne alone," Charles said, knowing it was a bold request, but after everything today, one more thing wouldn't hurt. "Benjamin, can you give us a moment?"

"Sure," Benjamin said, getting up.

Charles's eyes twinkled as he teased, "Aren't you worried I'll make a move on her?"

"You'd have to catch her first," Benjamin replied lazily.

They locked eyes, neither backing down.

After a moment, Benjamin ruffled Daphne's hair like she was a kid. "I'll be upstairs."

"Okay," Daphne said.

As Benjamin went upstairs, it was just Daphne and Charles in the living room.

Once the door closed, Daphne got straight to the point. "What do you want to talk about?"

"Is he good to you?" Charles asked, even though he already knew the answer.

"He's very good," Daphne replied formally.

Charles nodded.

An awkward silence settled between them.

"How are your grandparents?" Daphne asked after a pause.

"They're good," Charles said, adding, "They sometimes mention they miss you when we chat."

Daphne fell silent again.

Charles's eyes were fixed on her, his calm demeanor now in turmoil. He had thought he had moved on, but now he realized he was wrong. In the days without seeing Daphne, he felt calm, only experiencing a twinge when her name came up. But now, Charles could barely hold back his emotions.

"Daphne," he started, his voice rough.

Daphne looked up. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," Charles said, forcing a smile. "Just thinking how fast time flies, your kid's grown up so quickly."

"Yeah, it does," Daphne agreed, pursing her lips.

Charles nodded.

They fell into an awkward silence.

Daphne was about to suggest ending the conversation so Charles could get some rest when his phone vibrated.

Charles glanced at the caller ID and then hung up.

The caller rang again.

"Should I go upstairs?" Daphne asked, thinking she was in the way. "It's late; you should get some sleep; we can talk tomorrow."

"No need," Charles said, answering the call.

As soon as he picked up, a soft female voice came through, "Why'd you hang up on me?"

"Talking with a friend," Charles replied honestly.

The woman instinctively asked, "Who?"

"Daphne," Charles said.

Daphne looked at him, curious about who he was talking to. Was it Laura?
