Chapter 487 You're So Fierce
"Daphne, I wanna hang out with you for a couple days," Anouk blurted out after some small talk. She was dying to dig into Daphne's life story. "Can we boot Benjamin out?"
"Well..." Daphne hesitated.
If she said yes, Benjamin would definitely make her pay for it later, maybe even drag her to the base for some grueling training. But if she said no, Benjamin was already kind of a pain.
"Just be real with me." Benjamin gave Daphne the choice, stressing the last few words. "I'll go with whatever you say."
Daphne bit her lip, still a bit freaked out. "If we kick him out, won't it be bad?"
"Nah, you know how he is."
"Then..."
"Then it's settled!" Anouk decided for Daphne.
Daphne let out a sigh and shot Benjamin a look. 'It's not that I don't want you here, it's that Anouk doesn't want you around.'
Benjamin's lips curled into a sly smile. He spun his phone in his hand, unlocked it, and typed a few words: [Daphne, you're something else.]
Daphne thought, 'You are such a petty guy.'
Half an hour later, Anouk noticed Benjamin was still hanging around and couldn't help but ask, "Aren't you leaving?"
"Dad texted me to keep an eye on you two," Benjamin lied smoothly. "He's worried someone might steal his wife."
Daphne and Anouk both went silent.
In the end, Benjamin got to stay.
After dinner, when it was time to crash, Benjamin took a shower and then strolled into Daphne's room in his robe, hopping into bed without a second thought.
"Didn't you say sleeping together was risky?" Daphne was a bit nervous, her voice shaky. "Why..."
Benjamin lay on his side, staring at her. "I came over specifically to settle things with you. Wanna kick me out?"
"No."
"Avoiding me?"
"No."
"Then what's the deal?" Benjamin pressed her.
"You're too intense," Daphne said softly, a bit sleepy and slightly pouty. "I'm scared."
Benjamin suddenly laughed. "Are you?"
"You're really intense," Daphne accused.
"How am I intense?"
"You make me do frog jumps and weighted runs all the time."
"Seriously, have I punished you once since we got together?" Benjamin pinched her soft cheek, his tone rising. "Hmm?"
Daphne replied seriously, "That's a leftover fear from before, nothing to do with now."
"Want it to have something to do with now?" Benjamin blatantly threatened.
Daphne paused, a bit flustered.
What did he mean by that?
"How about a day trip to the base tomorrow as a reward?" Benjamin sounded like the instructor again. "We'll go through everything you're thinking about."
"Benjamin!" Daphne stopped pretending.
Benjamin's dark eyes locked onto her.
Daphne bit her lip. "You'll lose me if you keep this up."
"Don't wanna be disciplined?"
"No."
"If you and Mom team up to push me out again, I'll throw you into the base," Benjamin threatened for the first time. If he didn't, he feared Daphne would really kick him out in the future. "After the training, I'll discipline you in bed."
Daphne's eyes widened in shock, as if she couldn't believe he would say such a thing.
Benjamin knew what she was thinking. He pulled the blanket over them and brought her into his arms. "Staring at me won't help. Sleep."
Daphne was super obedient, not daring to move a muscle.
She could totally sense that Benjamin was in a dangerous mood. With Anouk in the next room, she didn't want any drama.
Benjamin was physically tormented but didn't touch Daphne, just quietly held her.
"Benjamin."
"Yeah?"
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
They both crashed together.
In the following days, Anouk kept Daphne company, chatting about her life from childhood to now. After hearing it all, Anouk genuinely thought Daphne was an amazing girl.
She had so many skills and was good at everything.
But usually, she was just super chill.
"If I had your skills when I was young, I would've been a big shot in the industry by now," Anouk joked with her. "Not many people are as laid-back as you."
"I am just too lazy," Daphne replied.
She was too lazy to compete with others, too lazy to fight for the top spot.
Except for learning hacking because she thought it was cool, she learned everything else thinking it would be good to have more skills. If her company ever went bust, she could still make a living and not starve.
Anouk smiled indulgently, reaching out to tuck Daphne's hair behind her ear. "From now on, you're my precious daughter. In the Reynolds family, I'll take care of you."
"Thanks." Daphne smiled faintly.
Some said the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship was the hardest to manage.
Daphne was super grateful that she had met such wonderful people. They exuded warmth from their very bones, making people want to get close and like them.
"I won't bother you two anymore. If I stay any longer, Benjamin might have a problem with it," Anouk said, holding Daphne's hand. "Come back and visit when you have time. I'll have someone make you something delicious."
"Okay." Daphne's eyes sparkled with a smile.
Not long after, Henry came to pick her up personally. They watched the two leave, not going back inside until they could no longer see the car.
Around five in the afternoon, Chris called.
He told Benjamin he was getting married.
After hearing the wedding location, Benjamin naturally replied, "I can't go."
"Why not?"
"I can't leave the country freely for the next two years."
"Didn't you go last time?"
"I applied for it," Benjamin still held a grudge about Chris's half-truths. "I can't apply twice in one year."
"This is my wedding with Sierra; are you really not coming?"
"No, congrats on your wedding," Benjamin said and hung up.
Chris immediately got angry and complained to Sierra, "Sierra, Benjamin isn't coming."
"That's what you get for not telling Henry and the others about his proposal last time," Sierra, being their good friend, understood their personalities well. "This is called reaping what you sow."
Chris just wanted Benjamin to get a scolding when he got home.
Thinking about this, he sent Benjamin a few messages, bombarding him.
Benjamin didn't respond at all. Watching Daphne sneak back to her room, he put his phone away and followed her.
He needed to ask Daphne why she didn't let him sleep next to her the past few days.
Spending the day with Anouk was one thing, but not giving him time at night was another.
