Chapter 344 Daphne Found Out

Nina came out of the bathroom, still in her white dress. The warm room kept her comfortable.

"Daphne!", Nina skipped over, grinning.

Daphne's face was cool as she stared at her. "How did you get in?"

"Through the front door,", Nina said casually. "I know your house password."

Daphne kept staring, not saying a word.

"Are you mad?", Nina sat next to her. "I'll apologize. Punish me however you want, okay?"

"Even send you to the police?", Daphne asked.

Nina scratched her head. "Maybe not that."

"Entering without permission is illegal,", Daphne warned. "Do it again, and I'll call the police."

"I'm just trying to help you vent,", Nina said, clinging to her arm. "He treated you badly; don't you want revenge?"

"It's in the past,", Daphne said. "Leave now, or I'll make you."

"Daphne."

"Leave."

"Are you still in love with him? Is that why you're mad at me?", Nina asked boldly.

Daphne's cold stare shut her up.

Nina raised her hands in surrender. "I'm leaving!"

She glanced at Charles and left. Outside, the cold air made her shiver. She quickly got to her car, put on a thick coat, and felt better.

"You're sleeping in another room tonight,", Daphne said, locking the door and changing the password. "I'll have someone deal with this tomorrow."

Nina was always unpredictable; Daphne couldn't tell when she was lying.

"I'm scared,", Charles said, sounding upset.

"There's nothing to be afraid of,", Daphne reassured him. "It's all fake."

If Charles had the mind of a child, she might have coddled him. But at seventeen, he should handle it himself.

"Daphne,", Charles held her arm, his eyes clear. "Can you sleep with me tonight? I'm too scared to be alone."

Daphne's alarm bells went off. She kept her cool. "Are you that scared?"

"Yes,", Charles nodded.

Daphne's heart sank. She suspected Charles and Nina had planned this together.

At seventeen, he should know better. After she told him she didn't like him and wouldn't marry him, he pulled this stunt.

Charles had always been good at acting. Pretending to be scared to get close to her wasn't beyond him.

"Wait here,", Daphne said, pressing a switch that turned the sofa into a bed. "I might travel for work in the future. Let's face this fear tonight so you won't be scared alone."

"Face it?", Charles was puzzled.

Daphne turned on the TV and navigated to the movie section. "Are you more afraid of blood or ghosts?"

"Huh?", Charles started to catch on. Daphne wanted to watch horror or suspense movies.

"If you're not sure, we'll watch one of each,", Daphne said, picking the scariest thriller first. "I'm scared too, so let's face it together."

"You're afraid of ghosts?", Charles asked skeptically.

Daphne nodded. "Yes."

"Daphne, you're lying,", Charles said, moving closer. "You don't seem scared of anything."

Since Nina showed up, Daphne had been calm. She didn't flinch at the spooky stuff in the room.

"People think I'm not scared,", Daphne said seriously. "But I am. As your sister, I have to protect you. If I showed fear, what would you do?"

Charles was stunned. Was she really scared?

"If you looked closely, you'd see my palms were sweaty when I saw those things,", Daphne lied smoothly. "When Nina appeared, my heart was pounding, and I was stiff."

She bet Charles was too focused on his act to notice the details and wouldn't catch her lie.

Thinking back, Charles realized he missed something. Even if he was acting, he should've asked, "Who are you? What are you doing in my room?" when Nina came out. But he didn't. He just focused on being scared.

"Since we're both scared, let's face it together,", Daphne said, bringing two blankets and starting the thriller.

"Wait!", Charles grabbed the remote and paused the movie.

Daphne looked at him. "What's wrong?"

"I'm not scared anymore,", Charles said seriously. "Daphne, I'll protect you from now on."

Daphne raised an eyebrow. So, he was pretending?

"Weren't you scared just now?", Daphne played along.

"I was, but when you have someone to protect, you can overcome those fears,", Charles said earnestly. "With me around, leave it to me."

Daphne looked at him, doubting his capability.

Her acting was different from Charles's. He wanted her attention, often leaving gaps. Daphne was meticulous, paying attention to every detail.

"If you don't believe me, I'll watch this movie with you to prove it,", Charles said, now he was completely different from the scared person than before.
