Chapter 281 My Mom Hasn't Hit Me in Three Days.
After sending the message, he turned off his phone and tucked it away, cutting off any chance of Patrick bothering him.
He'd finally managed to get Daphne out for some relaxation and wasn't about to let Patrick ruin it.
Patrick stared at the message on his phone, totally confused.
Without thinking, he dialed the number. "Hello, the number you have dialed is currently switched off."
Patrick felt helpless. He watched Benjamin's car drive away and gritted his teeth, muttering, "If you have the guts, never turn your phone on again!"
Benjamin wasn't worried about making him mad; they'd always enjoyed messing with each other since they were kids.
To be honest, they only saw each other as tools, reaching out only when they needed something.
By the time the car reached the city, it was already past four in the afternoon.
Benjamin took Daphne straight home.
At this hour, it was too late for him to go to work; besides, he and Jesse had already handled the important stuff, so she didn't need to worry.
After dropping Daphne off, she opened the door and went inside.
"Thanks for today," Daphne said seriously once inside, "I'll give you a raise next month."
Benjamin replied casually, "Thanks."
Daphne felt a bit awkward. She still wasn't used to that title.
"You go in and rest. I'll call you for dinner later," Benjamin said, sounding like a concerned elder, "I have to live up to that raise you're giving me."
"I..." Daphne started to refuse.
Benjamin's deep eyes looked at her; with just one look, he made her swallow her words. She changed her response. "Okay."
After they each went back to their homes, Daphne contacted Evan. Compared to her, Evan probably knew more about Benjamin.
After some small talk, Daphne got to the point. "How do I refuse Benjamin's dinner invites every time he cooks?"
"Dinner?" Evan adjusted his glasses.
"Benjamin keeps inviting me over for dinner." Daphne felt uneasy. Although Benjamin had promised not to hold a grudge over past events, she was still worried. "Given his past behavior, when he's nice to someone, it usually means he wants to make them suffer."
Other than that incident, she didn't seem to have done anything to provoke Benjamin.
Hadn't that incident already passed?
Evan smiled to himself, silently lamenting how difficult Benjamin's pursuit of Daphne was.
Daphne noticed his expression. "Why are you smiling?"
"Is it possible that Benjamin has retired?" Evan tried to guide her.
Daphne was stunned. Hadn't Benjamin already said that?
Evan continued, "Since he's no longer the scary captain he used to be, we shouldn't compare him to his past self."
"What do you mean?" Daphne asked.
"He might just be genuinely being nice to you," Evan explained, "Or maybe he feels uneasy living in your house and taking the high salary you give him, so he wants to do something to repay you."
"Would Benjamin really feel that way?" Daphne was completely unguarded against these people.
"He used to be our captain in the military, and he was better than all of us," Evan continued to lie with a straight face. But after leaving, he found out that our family backgrounds were better, especially yours. He might feel inferior."
Daphne frowned. Inferior? Is that word related to Benjamin?
"Daphne, men's egos are very strong, especially Benjamin's," Evan continued spinning his tale. "If he invites you over for dinner, just go. It might make him feel better."
"Are you serious?" Daphne still found it too absurd.
From what she knew, Benjamin was definitely not that kind of person, but what Evan said seemed to make some sense.
Evan added meaningfully, "If you don't believe me, you can ask Dominic, but don't mention that it's about Benjamin."
Daphne nodded. After some more small talk, she ended the video call.
She sat there thinking about the past and finally concluded that Benjamin's ego did seem very strong.
However, she didn't dwell on it further.
Remembering what Benjamin had said about the group message, she opened the eight-person friend group that included Benjamin and replied: [I'm free recently; we can meet up anytime.]
Brian was still observing Charles, and she had dealt with the issues at Lancelot Group that Mark couldn't handle.
As for the company, she had already made arrangements. She was indeed temporarily free.
Emma: [How about tomorrow night?]
Zoey: [No objections.]
Evan: [Me neither.]
Everyone else also replied, saying they were free, except for Benjamin.
Emma and Zoey kept tagging him in the group, but he didn't respond.
Just then, there was a knock on Daphne's door.
When she opened it, she saw Benjamin holding his phone, looking speechless. "Can you help me out?"
Daphne asked, "What's wrong?"
Benjamin said, "My phone has a virus."
Daphne opened the door wider to let him in.
She then remembered that Benjamin's phone had been new since his retirement, and she hadn't helped him secure the system yet.
"Don't turn it on," Benjamin said as she pressed the power button. But he was too late.
As soon as she pressed the button, the phone started vibrating violently, accompanied by a cheerful song. "I'm Benjamin; my mom hasn't hit me in three days! I'm Benjamin; my mom hasn't hit me in three days!"
His phone kept repeating this phrase, with the words scrolling across the screen.
Daphne was momentarily silent.
Benjamin, with his short hair looking sharp and handsome, wasn't embarrassed at all. He raised an eyebrow and asked, "Can you fix it?"
"Yes," Daphne replied.
She took the phone to her study.
This kind of problem was easy for her to solve. She quickly removed the virus and also strengthened the phone's system.
After finishing, she handed the phone back to him and asked, "Did you offend someone?"
Benjamin nodded. "Yes."
Daphne asked, "Do you need my help?"
Benjamin paused at her question, then smiled slightly. "Could you help me by planting a virus in Chris's phone that plays 'Mom, come hit me' every time he turns it on or off?"
Daphne was stunned. Was Benjamin really so childish?
"Can't do it?" Benjamin's voice had a teasing lilt.
Daphne was silent for a moment but eventually agreed. "Sure."
"I'll call him first, and then you can plant it half an hour later," Benjamin said, knowing that once he decided to mess with someone, no one could escape.
