Chapter 279 Taking Daphne Out for a Walk
"I figured," Daphne said, her voice heavy.
Over the past couple of days, she'd thought everything through and still felt something was off.
But she couldn't put her finger on it, so she asked Richard to dig a little.
"If you want to know, help me crack the code on the third door tonight; I'll show you," Richard suggested.
"No need." Daphne wasn't one to push for answers others didn't want to give. "If he wants to keep it a secret, I won't stop him. As long as he can make Charles better, it doesn't matter what he's hiding."
"Alright," Richard said.
"Thanks," Daphne replied.
"It's nothing," Richard said.
The call ended.
Daphne then turned her attention back to her conversation with Mark.
Normally, if Mark found out Daphne was K, he'd be so excited his eyes would light up, and he'd hand over a notebook for her to sign.
But right now, aside from a brief emotional reaction, most of his thoughts were on Charles.
"Is Mr. Lancelot's condition really that bad?" he asked Daphne, who was sitting to his right, with concern.
"Yes." Daphne didn't go into details and quickly signed her name on a contract. "If there's anything you're unsure about or concerned with during this period, you can come to me."
She signed a confidentiality agreement to reassure Mark.
She owned HorizonTech Group and was an investment advisor for Murphy Group. She didn't want Mark to have any concerns.
"That's not necessary." Mark trusted her. "I believe in you."
"I know." Daphne had always known Mark was a good person. "Precisely because of that, I should give this to you."
Mark felt conflicted.
Ms. Murphy was genuinely good.
If it hadn't been for those things in the past, Charles and Daphne would have been a couple everyone envied.
"There's something I want to ask of you," Daphne said after some thought.
"Go ahead," Mark replied.
"When Charles comes back, don't tell him I was involved with Lancelot Group or what I did." Daphne didn't want any more disputes. "Just pretend it was all you."
Mark asked, confused, "Why?"
Shouldn't Charles know she helped? At the very least, he should remember her.
"He doesn't want to be entangled with me anymore, nor does he want to owe me," Daphne explained more clearly, knowing Mark couldn't understand, "If he finds out I was involved after he recovers, it will definitely cause conflict."
She didn't want to go through any more arguments. She just wanted him to get better and then, as he wished, become strangers who didn't disturb each other.
Mark pursed his lips, wanting to say something, but in the end, he just said, "Alright."
"Contact me by phone if you need anything." Daphne handed him the confidentiality agreement. "Anytime."
"Okay." Mark took it.
After watching Daphne leave, Mark went to Charles's office.
During this period, he handled most of the matters at Gedser. He couldn't hand things back to the general manager of the Gedser branch; if he did, it might raise suspicions.
Charles was still undergoing treatment; he had to stay in Gedser to monitor the situation.
Most importantly, he couldn't tell the media about Charles's condition. Charles had specifically instructed him not to let any information leak.
Mark was overly worried. Since it was confirmed that Charles couldn't recover anytime soon, Daphne had already intercepted any information about Charles online. Any reports about him were blocked and couldn't be published.
She did this to keep it from Laura and Marcus, not wanting them to worry.
After leaving Lancelot Group, Daphne went to her car and sat in the driver's seat, leaning her head against the headrest.
Today, she learned from Mark the details of the two high fevers Charles had during that period, which Richard had mentioned before.
She hadn't expected that her forgiveness would cause such an emotional impact on Charles, nor had she expected that on the day she told him she was going to be taken away, he was in the hospital with a fever.
He had a high fever for a long time and, without recovering, went to the beach and spent a night in the cold wind, which worsened his fever.
If it weren't for that, the gunshot probably wouldn't have caused such severe consequences.
Thinking about this, Daphne felt a tightness in her chest.
She didn't know why things had turned out this way. If she had known, from the moment they signed the divorce papers, she should have found a place to spend a month quietly.
She wouldn't bring a computer, a phone, or anything.
That way, maybe things wouldn't have turned out like this.
Her car window was knocked on.
She opened her eyes and looked outside, seeing Benjamin standing there, his deep eyes showing a hint of concern.
She straightened up and rolled down the window. "Benjamin?"
"Get out, I'll take you somewhere," Benjamin said lazily and gently, with one hand in his pocket.
Daphne didn't want to go anywhere, so she boldly said, "It's work hours now. If you skip work without reason, your salary will be docked."
"Making my boss happy is also part of my job as an assistant," Benjamin said seriously, though he was clearly making it up.
Daphne sighed but still got out of the car.
She knew Benjamin well; if it weren'tsomething important, he wouldn't have asked her to go with him.
Benjamin closed and locked her car door before leading her to his SUV.
Once inside, Daphne looked around the SUV, a hint of confusion in her eyes.
Benjamin asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." Daphne had a lot on her mind and didn't think much of it. "I just feel like I've seen this car before."
Benjamin's eyes flickered, but he calmly replied, "It's not a limited edition. It's normal for you to have seen it."
Daphne nodded and didn't say more.
This SUV cost only a few hundred thousand dollars; many people in Gedser could afford it. Many of these cars were bought and then modified, but Daphne still felt a strange sense of familiarity.
However, she didn't dwell on it and sat there, lost in thought after getting in the car.
Benjamin noticed her unusual mood but didn't try to make conversation. He quietly drove, taking her to their destination.
The drive took over an hour, and Daphne's mind wandered the entire time. When they arrived, they were on a wide, flat mountaintop surrounded by greenery and forests. Standing at the edge, they could see misty mountains.
"Benjamin, why did you bring me here?" Daphne asked.
Was he going to make her shout out her troubles?
As soon as the thought crossed her mind, she dismissed it.
Benjamin preferred to have people release their worries through training. Once a person was exhausted, they wouldn't think about their troubles anymore.
