Chapter 489 He Is Not Someone Who Relies on Women
"Forget it," Daphne shot back, making up an excuse. "I can't ditch HorizonTech Group; it's been crazy busy lately."
"Really? Jesse told me there's nothing big happening right now," Benjamin called her out. "He said it's not as hectic as before."
"You're not with HorizonTech anymore. Of course, he wouldn't spill the truth to you," Daphne said, keeping a straight face. "I'm the boss. I know best if it's busy or not."
Benjamin knew she was fibbing but let it slide. She was his girl, and he didn't want to put her on the spot.
Just after they finished eating, a dude in a suit and glasses showed up.
Daphne was curious about who this guy was.
Desmond walked up to Benjamin, pulled a file folder from his briefcase, and handed it over. "Mr. Reynolds, everything you asked for is ready."
As Desmond said this, he couldn't help but check out Daphne. He thought, 'So Benjamin's into the pretty ones too.'
"Desmond, chief secretary of the Reynolds Group," Benjamin introduced him to Daphne, then turned to Desmond. "Daphne, my fiancée."
"Hello, Ms. Murphy," Desmond greeted, finally able to look directly.
"Desmond."
"Yes?"
"Don't eyeball a girl like a starving wolf," Benjamin commented on his intense stare. "You represent not just yourself but the Reynolds Group too."
Desmond, being sharp, immediately got that Benjamin wasn't cool with how he was looking at Daphne.
"I'm just curious about the woman who could tame you," Desmond grinned, being honest.
Benjamin shot him a look. "Seen enough?"
Desmond chuckled. "Yeah."
"The door's over there; don't let it hit you on the way out." Benjamin dismissed him without a second thought.
Desmond wondered if Benjamin had to be so harsh.
In the end, Benjamin didn't kick him out.
He took the file folder Desmond handed over and gave it to Daphne. "For you, just sign it."
"What?" Daphne took it and opened the folder.
Before she could see what was inside, Benjamin said, "Something for the wedding."
Daphne was stunned. When she saw the several pages of lists, she sat there, totally confused. Was this really for the wedding, not a property transfer?
"It's not much; hope you don't mind," Benjamin added.
Desmond's lips twitched. This was not much?
If Desmond remembered right, all of Benjamin's real estate and shares in the Reynolds Group's subsidiaries were here. If the Reynolds Group's shares weren't restricted from being transferred within twenty years of inheritance, they would probably be here too.
"No, I don't want it." Daphne pushed the thick stack of documents back.
Benjamin raised an eyebrow, his voice low and casual. "Too little?"
"You know it's not," Daphne shot him a glare.
If this was considered little, she had no clue what would be considered a lot.
This included $10 million in cash, plus a ton of real estate and shares in other companies.
"We're not in some business deal; we don't need this," Daphne told him.
"I get where you're coming from, but I still want you to take it," Benjamin said, clearly having thought this through. "Only if you accept it will I know you won't bail on me."
Desmond was scratching his head.
Why was it that most people worried about others running off with the money, but for Benjamin, it was the opposite?
Daphne still wanted to refuse.
Benjamin then said, "Or do you not plan to marry me?"
"If I didn't plan to marry you, I wouldn't have proposed," Daphne said, knowing he was trying to corner her into accepting it. But wasn't a ring enough? Why bring all his assets into this?
Desmond's eyes widened. "Propose?"
Daphne and Benjamin both looked at him.
Desmond was super curious. "Is it the proposal I'm thinking of?"
"Are you jealous?" Benjamin asked, smirking.
"Wasn't it you who proposed to Ms. Murphy? How did it become Ms. Murphy proposing to you?" Desmond was confused. He still remembered Benjamin saying he was going to propose last time.
"We're on the same page," Benjamin said with a grin. "Any issues with that?"
Desmond quickly replied, "No issues."
"But..." he added.
They both looked at him again.
Desmond couldn't help himself. "How did you propose?"
"The video you were sharing like crazy on Facebook was our proposal scene," Benjamin said, and Desmond's face froze. "The drones and fireworks were her idea, and the meteor shower was mine."
Desmond was floored. Such an epic proposal was Daphne's doing!!
"Ms. Murphy, need a capable secretary?" Desmond blurted out. "I can be of service."
Benjamin's eyes darkened. "You looking for a smack?"
"I didn't mean it like that," Desmond quickly backpedaled, clearly flustered.
"I mean, Mr. Reynolds, your criteria for a spouse haven't changed," Desmond said, trying to steer the conversation back.
Daphne was curious. "Criteria for a spouse?"
"He used to say he wanted someone who could protect him. Looks like that's still the case," Desmond said, being blunt.
"He's not someone who relies on women," Daphne felt the need to set the record straight. "I proposed because I wanted to marry him, to show him I love him too."
"Did you hear that?" Benjamin felt a warm glow inside.
Loving someone was amazing, but being loved was just as sweet.
Desmond was super envious! In this world of the rich, he'd seen many romances, but none as deep as Benjamin and Daphne's.
No wonder Benjamin had turned down all those other amazing girls; he had always been waiting for someone like Daphne.
