Chapter 322 Resolving Issues Quickly and Decisively

Daphne realized Benjamin had asked Charles to copy the book to reveal his handwriting.

Adult handwriting is different from a child's, but Charles managed to disguise it well.

"Daphne," Charles called from outside.

She opened the door. "What's up?"

"I need to ask you something," Charles said, wanting to give Brian some space. "Will you listen?"

"Go ahead," Daphne replied.

"Do you like Benjamin next door?" Charles asked.

What kind of question was that?

Observing his sincere expression, Daphne perceived it as an act. "Haven't we been through this already?"

"I just want to confirm. If Benjamin confessed, would you be with him?" Charles pressed.

"No," Daphne said. Benjamin was good-looking, but that wasn't enough. "I'm not interested in that right now."

Due to her previous marriage and her personality, she was indifferent towards dating and matrimony.

"Then can I marry you?" Charles asked.

Daphne poked his head, sternly saying, "Aren't we like siblings?"

"I want to marry you," Charles insisted. "I want to take care of you."

"Stop thinking about it," Daphne said firmly. "I don't want to get married or date. I just want to live my life."

Charles felt hurt by her rejection. "Is it because I hurt you before?" he asked.

"It has nothing to do with that," Daphne said. "We are just like siblings; there won't be anything more, understand?"

Her words were harsh but necessary to stop Charles's obsession.

"Oh," Charles said, his head drooping. "Got it."

He turned and left, looking dejected.

Daphne closed the door and called Brian, but his phone was off. She sent him a message instead.

The next morning, Brian called back.

"I'm not in Gedser. I'm abroad," he said.

"When did you go?" Daphne asked from her balcony.

"Yesterday," Brian replied. "It's better to do Charles's check-up after Christmas. Don't worry. By the way, there's something I forgot to tell you."

Daphne's voice was calm. "What?"

"Charles's mental state has improved a bit," Brian said slowly, "but it's still unstable. Be careful not to upset him."

Daphne furrowed her brow, sensing that something was amiss.

"Is your signal bad?" Brian asked casually.

"Before the Butterfly Island incident, did you and Charles have any dealings?" Daphne asked directly. "Just tell me, and I'll owe you one free favor."

Brian was tempted; Daphne's help was invaluable.

"You're putting me in a tough spot," Brian said gently.

Daphne stayed silent.

After a pause, Brian decided. "Telling you now is pointless. Plus, I promised Charles I wouldn't say anything."

"Are you sure you won't say?" Daphne pressed.

"I can't," Brian insisted.

Daphne recalled their previous agreement. "Do you remember what you promised when you asked me to call Richard to save Charles?"

Brian hesitated, recalling Richard's conditions: ten billion dollars and a favor from Daphne.

"I remember," Brian said, less confident.

"My favor is to cancel the deal between you and Charles," Daphne offered.

"It's already too late," Brian replied.

"What was your deal with him?" Daphne asked again.

"Hello?" Brian pretended the signal was bad. "Ms. Murphy, are you there? Hello?"

He hung up, but Daphne called back immediately, not giving him a chance to escape.

Brian sighed, frustrated by Charles's connection to Daphne.

"Has the signal improved?" Daphne inquired calmly, though Brian could sense her underlying anger.

Realizing he couldn't avoid it, Brian said, "It's better now."

"I want to know the content of the deal between you and Charles," Daphne repeated.

"I really can't say," Brian said, sounding helpless. "I signed a contract with Charles that forbids me from revealing the details."

"I have to follow the contract," Brian added.

Daphne pursed her lips. She really wanted to know the deal, suspecting it wasn't good.

"If you genuinely wish to find out, wait until his mental state and memory have fully recovered before approaching him," Brian proposed. "If he is open to sharing, I won't stand in your way."

Reluctantly, Daphne agreed. "Okay."

"If there's nothing else, I'll hang up now," Brian said, not wanting to risk saying more.
