Chapter 455 This Guess is Very Unreliable
Benjamin wasn't having any of it and just scooped her up, carrying her inside.
Daphne was stiff as a board, scared out of her mind.
"Why you so freaked out?" Benjamin teased, a smirk playing in his eyes. "Even if you wanted to get with me, you'd still need my okay."
The way he said it made it sound like she was dying to jump his bones.
"Go wash up and hit the sack early," Benjamin said, dropping the teasing. He knew she was shy. "We'll go out and have a blast tomorrow."
"I got plans tomorrow."
"Then the day after."
"Busy then too."
"Daphne."
"Yeah?"
"Don't you think you're blowing me off a bit?" Benjamin got close, his voice dropping. "I come to see you, and you shove me away. I ask you out, and you're too busy."
Daphne was scrambling for an excuse.
"Are you up to something behind my back?" Benjamin was bluffing and also teasing. "Or maybe you've got plans with someone else and can't fit me in."
"No," Daphne said quickly, worried he'd start digging.
If he did, no way she could possibly hide her plan from him.
Zoey and Emma, even though they were on her side, would probably spill the beans under Benjamin's "interrogation" since it wasn't a big deal to them.
As for her schedule, keeping it secret seemed pointless.
"I'll work overtime tomorrow to wrap things up, and let Jesse handle the project the day after," Daphne said smoothly, not giving anything away. "Then I'll hang out with you."
"That's more like it." Benjamin tapped her nose.
Lately, every time he went abroad, he needed the organization's green light, and he wouldn't go unless he had to.
This time, he got only a few days, and Benjamin was itching to show Daphne all the cool spots around here.
After they sorted things out, Benjamin headed out first, and Daphne started her nighttime routine.
Bright and early the next morning, Benjamin went off to handle his stuff. Daphne knocked out some work, handed the rest to Jesse, and went to check on the ring.
But she never saw the kidnapping coming.
Now, Daphne was sitting in a car, cool as a cucumber, eyeing the people inside. "Who the hell are you?"
"Chill, we're just messing with you," said Laird Sullivan, a bearded guy in the passenger seat. He looked goofy when he smiled but could turn fierce in a heartbeat. "Your boyfriend's Benjamin, right?"
Hearing that, Daphne's guard shot up.
Maybe she'd been too relaxed lately, or she just never thought she'd get snatched up here, which is why they got her so easily.
But if Daphne wanted out, it wouldn't be hard. She just suddenly didn't feel like bailing.
Who were these guys? What was their deal with Benjamin? And why kidnap her? If she didn't figure it out, she'd be on edge forever.
If they were after Benjamin, things could get real ugly. His enemies were no joke.
"Don't be so icy." Laird kept smiling, trying to seem friendly. "We're really just playing a prank on you."
"Is pointing a gun at me part of the joke?" Daphne asked, cool as a cucumber.
Two guns were aimed right at her. One wrong move, and they might just pull the trigger.
"Just making sure you don't mess up our plan," Laird said, trying to sound casual. "To keep things smooth, you might have to deal with a little discomfort."
As he spoke, someone pulled out a rope to tie her up.
Daphne didn't fight it. She figured they'd take her to their hideout anyway.
While they tied her up, she noticed the knots. They were unique but oddly familiar.
"Relax, we won't hurt you," Laird added. "Think of it as a game. You'll wake up, and it'll all be over."
"Who are you guys?"
"Can't say yet."
"Why'd you kidnap me?"
"We need to meet Benjamin."
Daphne's eyes turned icy.
Laird exchanged a look with the guy next to him, who then handed her a drink.
"Drink this, and you'll knock out. When you wake up, everything will be back to normal," Laird explained. "You won't get hurt, and neither will Benjamin."
Daphne didn't touch it. No matter who they were, she wasn't drinking it.
She needed to keep control of the situation to stay safe.
Seeing she wouldn't drink, Laird didn't push it. He'd said his piece. If she freaked out later, that was on her.
And so, they took her away.
Over an hour later, they brought her to some secret base.
Daphne was blindfolded and tied to a chair. She heard the click of a camera, then the door shut.
She sat there for a bit, making sure no one else was around, then started working on the ropes.
Meanwhile, the guy who took the photos went to find Laird.
"Mr. Sullivan, the photos are ready."
"Send them to Benjamin anonymously. Tell him to come alone."
"Got it."
They got to work. The vibe in the room was way too chill for a bunch of kidnappers.
"Mr. Sullivan, why do you look so worried?" The guy who sent the email put away his phone, looking puzzled. "Didn't we already kidnap her?"
"Don't you think something's off?" Laird was deep in thought, feeling uneasy. "Isn't Benjamin's girlfriend a bit too calm? Any normal girl would be bawling her eyes out with guns pointed at her."
Everyone exchanged glances.
"Yeah, it's kinda weird."
"She seems like she's been through this before."
"Maybe she knows what Benjamin used to do, so she's not scared and feels confident?"
"No way. Confidence based on someone else is always shaky. She couldn't be this calm," Laird said seriously. "If I'm not mistaken, she's seen some serious stuff before."
"What kind of serious stuff?"
"You mean she's like Benjamin?"
"No." Laird wasn't sure and could only guess. "I heard she's a socialite; maybe she's been kidnapped a bunch of times since she was a kid."
The others thought his theory was pretty far-fetched but kept quite.
"You two, come with me to interrogate her." Laird suddenly got curious, wanting to test Daphne's nerves. "Let's see if she's just faking it or really that confident."
