Chapter 158 What Do You Want to Kill Me For
The standoff between the two continued.
Daphne pulled out her cell phone, dialed a number, and put it on speakerphone before tossing it on the table.
Due to the privacy screen, Kayla couldn't see who she was calling. She was about to ask when a voice came through from the other end of the line.
"Hello?" Charles' voice came through the phone.
He had thought he was hallucinating when he saw Daphne's name on the incoming call. But after carefully checking a few times, he confirmed it was indeed her number and immediately perked up, answering the call.
Daphne spoke into the phone, "Your ex-girlfriend wants to kill you; she's asking if you would cooperate."
Charles was perplexed. So was Kayla. Their reactions were nearly identical.
"Why would you kill me?" Charles furrowed his brow, a bit annoyed.
Next to him, Mark, who was delivering a report, panicked. ‘What was happening? Ms. Murphy wanted to kill the boss?’
"It's your ex-girlfriend, not me," Daphne reminded him, her tone as indifferent as ever. "She wants to stab you so you'll send her to prison for a taste of jail food."
Hearing her say this, Charles immediately thought of one person, "Kayla?"
"Mhm."
"I won't cooperate," Charles said curtly. Without caring how difficult it had been for Daphne to get through to him, he promptly hung up.
With her usual calm gaze, Daphne looked over and said, "You heard that."
"Then help me get in," Kayla demanded.
"Why would I help you?" Daphne questioned.
"If I don't succeed, that man will come after you." Kayla knew him all too well. "The hellish life there, even you couldn't bear it."
Every night since escaping from there, Kayla was plagued by nightmares. She dreamt of snakes and terrifying scenes.
And... that man who gave her chills just by thinking of him. He had already set his sights on Daphne once, and it was likely he would come after her again.
Daphne could tell she wasn't lying. She pulled out her phone to find her chat with Evan and scrolled through it until she found a photo Evan had sent her. The image of Kayla with a man. This was a photo Daphne had asked Evan for when she had planned to investigate further.
"Is this the man you're talking about?" Daphne opened the picture and handed it to Kayla.
Upon seeing the photo, Kayla was taken aback, reminded of the time Charles had confronted her with it, and she subconsciously thought it was Daphne's doing. But after a moment of thought, she knew it couldn't be her.
"Yes, but also no," Kayla hesitated. "That's his disguised face; he doesn't look like this."
Daphne's brow furrowed, "What does he look like?"
Asking her this prompted Kayla to borrow paper and a pen from a coffee shop worker, and she began to draw a sketch right in front of Daphne. Having been with that man for so long, she had never had a photograph of him, nor dared to take one. But she would never forget his face.
Ten minutes later, a rough outline had taken shape. Looking at the all-too-familiar facial features, Daphne's eyes slowly filled with a cold intention as she pointed to the drawing, "This person, at his hairline, is there a three-centimeter scar?"
Kayla's hand stilled as she was drawing. Her eyes shook as she gasped, "You... how do you know?"
The air around Daphne changed instantly. She grabbed her phone, opened a secret album, and found a picture to hand over, "Is it him?"
Looking at the face she would recognize even in ashes, Kayla answered affirmatively, "Yes."
Questions arose in her mind. ‘How did Daphne know this person? Why did she have his photo?’
"Do you ever want to live a normal life?" Daphne suddenly asked her.
Kayla was still confused, "What?"
"Go back and tell him you can't get close to Charles, and suggest I try," Daphne abruptly said, shifting her demeanor from before.
Kayla paused, "Do you... do you know what you're saying?"
"I do."
"He may be good-looking, but he's not Charles," Kayla knew that Daphne was a face-judger, "You..."
"Don't you want to live a good life with your grandma and little brother?" Daphne looked up directly, striking Kayla's core.
Kayla thought, ‘Yes, of course.’ Repeatedly, she told herself internally.
She longed for it, but she couldn't drag Daphne down with her. The last time, they nearly made a grave mistake; she couldn't repeat it.
"If you want it, do as I say," Daphne offered her a choice, "This is your only chance to choose."
Kayla was torn. On one side was a peaceful and stable life and on the other, her conscience.
Thinking of that, Kayla smirked bitterly inside. It was funny, to think that she, of all people, still had a conscience.
Now, her mind was consumed with what Daphne had previously said to her.
"No matter who you face, don’t let them control your conscience. I can protect your family, but I can't guard your eroded conscience."
At that time, despite doing something wrong to her, Daphne had still promised to protect her grandma and little brother.
Contemplating this...
Kayla suddenly decided, "I want to live a good life with them, but I can't be at peace by dragging you into this."
Daphne was at a loss for words.
This person was really... beyond words.
"You should go." Kayla was determined to find a way out, "If one day you come across that man, stay as far away as possible. Don't have any contact with him."
She had suffered enough in such places, and someone as kind-hearted as Daphne shouldn't be dragged into darkness.
As she stood up to leave, Daphne called out to her, "Wait."
Kayla stopped in her tracks.
Daphne rose and approached her, saying, "If you want to make up for the hurt you caused me, do as I say. Instead of being targeted unknowingly, better to step into the game voluntarily."
"What do you mean?" Kayla was bewildered.
"Pawn you disposed of earlier had already put me in his crosshairs," Daphne explained more clearly to her, "Do you think he won't come after me now that your mission has failed?"
With those simple words, Kayla was stopped in her tracks.
Right, if she failed the mission and ended up in jail, that person would come for Daphne; Daphne would still be a target.
"If you truly want to help me, do as I say," Daphne said earnestly, her usually clear-cut eyes tinged with a touch of emotion, "I'll be okay, and your family will be safe too."
Before Kayla could ask any more questions, Daphne had already left. She opened her car door, sat down, and thought about the information she had received from Kayla. She unlocked her phone, opened WhatsApp, found the group chat named "The Seven Siblings," and sent out a message.
Daphne: [He's shown up.]
After sending the message, she leaned back in her seat, her mind involuntarily drifting to the past. It was this person who had almost led to the decimation of their team.
No one knew how terrifying this person was better than Daphne.
