Chapter 499 Why So Nervous
Daphne was still texting Emma.
Benjamin felt his phone buzz in his pocket and knew the call had gone through.
Emma had just found a safe spot and was confused by the call, "Benjamin?"
After waiting a bit and hearing nothing, she was about to hang up.
Benjamin's distant voice finally came through. "What did Emma say?"
"She hasn't replied yet." That was Daphne's voice.
Both voices were faint.
Emma quickly figured out the point of the call.
"How about calling her?" Benjamin suggested. "No matter what she says later, I still think their game is not something you should get involved in."
Daphne agreed.
At that moment, Benjamin put his hand in his pocket and hung up the phone.
In the past, Daphne's sharp instincts would have caught on, but since getting pregnant, she was a bit distracted relatively, making her reactions slower.
But even so, she was still sharper than most.
Daphne called Emma.
Emma grumbled that Benjamin was sneaky but still picked up Daphne's call.
"Daphne."
"When are you leaving? I'll cover for you," Daphne said right away.
Emma was a bit surprised.
Daphne glanced at Benjamin sitting next to her, and despite being a little scared, she said, "I can make sure no one knows your whereabouts, including Benjamin."
"Really?" Emma was a bit surprised. She didn't expect Daphne to dare to confront Benjamin for her.
"Yes." Daphne was very serious.
Benjamin glanced at Daphne, suddenly unsure of how things would develop.
"Never mind." Emma had had enough fun and just wanted to rest for a while.
But thinking carefully, Daphne was always serious about her tasks. If she really kept Emma's whereabouts hidden, Emery wouldn't be able to find her.
Daphne was puzzled. "Why?"
She was wondering if Emma was suddenly saying this because she was afraid of Benjamin.
"If you really hide all my whereabouts, the game won't be fun anymore." Emma thought of Emery's expression when he almost caught her and smiled slightly. "Take good care of yourself. I'll come to see you after the baby is born."
With Benjamin around, Emma wasn't worried at all.
He knew how to give Daphne the best of everything.
Daphne asked her, "Are you being threatened?"
"Who could threaten me?" Emma saw a group of bodyguards coming her way and quickly hung up. "I can't talk now. Emery's people are coming."
She hung up and turned to leave.
Daphne was a bit confused. If she hadn't misheard, Emma had mentioned a game.
"Is their game of chase and escape really fun?" Daphne had never played it and was curious.
"It is for them," Benjamin analyzed, still hoping she wouldn't get involved. "But for others, it might be terrifying."
How could it be fun and terrifying at the same time?
"What about for me?" she asked.
"When you were divorcing Charles and he chased after you, how did you feel?" Benjamin gave her a relatively objective example.
Daphne thought for a moment and said, "I wanted to punch him."
"So this game isn't for you." Benjamin was particularly patient, his pleasant voice low and lazy. "But this example doesn't quite fit Emma and Emery."
Now, Daphne got it—Emma and Emery were playing some wild game of manhunt.
"Are you still gonna ignore me for her?" Benjamin started bringing up old grudges.
"I didn't mean itg," Daphne knew she was in the wrong and quickly added. "I wouldn't really ignore you. After being together for so long, don't you know me by now?"
Benjamin looked at her, his gaze clear. Saying that didn't help.
"I'm hungry." Daphne switched tactics.
Benjamin always cared about her eating and drinking, so he didn't argue further. "What do you want to eat?"
"Mexican stir-fry."
"I'll make it for you. Don't move around too much."
"Okay!"
Daphne agreed readily.
Benjamin went to prep the ingredients to cook for her.
Since marrying Daphne, Benjamin had hired a chef to teach him how to cook so he could whip up meals she liked during her pregnancy.
After all, the internet said pregnant women had different tastes than before.
Daphne hadn't been picky before, but after getting pregnant, she started to be.
She went from liking mild flavors to craving sour, spicy, and strong ones.
While Benjamin was making the Mexican stir-fry, Daphne quietly went upstairs. After confirming that Benjamin was busy downstairs, she went to the study, locked the door, turned on the computer, and called Emma.
"I thought you didn't catch my hint," Emma teased when she answered.
Earlier, Emma had deliberately said, "Who could threaten me?"
This was both a reply to Daphne and a hint that besides Benjamin, who else could threaten her?
"Let's get down to business." Daphne hadn't realized it at first but remembered after hanging up. "Where are you now?"
"At the airport."
"Do you really want me to hide all your whereabouts?"
"Just for three months." Emma had her own matters to attend to, and Emery's constant pursuit was a hassle. "After three months, you don't have to worry about me."
Daphne immediately started helping her.
In ten minutes, everything was done.
Just as she was about to shut down the computer and leave, the study door suddenly opened.
Benjamin's tall, slender figure walked in, his lazy gaze falling on her.
"Jesse needed something, so I came up to check," Daphne said quickly, always using Jesse as an excuse.
"Why are you so nervous?" Benjamin looked at her leisurely. "I just came up to ask what kind of meat you wanted."
Daphne wondered why, as an adult, she felt like she was a kid being managed by another adult.
Benjamin raised his eyes slightly, about to ask again.
Daphne spoke up, "Anything is fine."
"Okay." Benjamin said nothing more and turned to leave. Other matters were trivial compared to Daphne's meals.
Besides, he didn't really stop her from using the computer, as long as she didn't use it all day and night.
But Daphne often lost track of time when working and forgot to get up and move around.
"Wait a minute," Daphne called out to him.
Benjamin turned to look at her. "What's up?"
"Didn't I lock the door just now?" Daphne pointed to the lock, tentatively asking. "How did you just push it open?"
