Chapter 363 To Talk Business with You
Mark had already set up the new system. He asked, "Want to check if the last surveillance video is damaged?"
"No," Daphne replied confidently. She felt fine.
But Mark pushed, "Better check it."
That made Daphne give him a second look before turning to the computer and agreeing.
She opened the last video, which was from the day Charles visited Mark.
Thanks to Mark's nudge, Daphne watched closely. As she listened, her eyes narrowed.
"I know he's fully recovered," Daphne said, turning off the video. "He confessed to me."
If she had seen this before Charles told her, she might've been mad, but now it didn't matter. She was more interested in the game he wanted to play.
After chatting with Mark for a bit, Daphne left.
Now, Daphne understood why Mark kept suggesting she help Charles pick a surveillance system.
Mark had been trying to tell her Charles was lying, but she hadn't noticed.
Back home, Daphne called Brian. He must've known Charles was fully recovered but kept it from her.
Brian, still abroad, answered, thinking Charles's condition had worsened. "Did something happen to Charles?"
"No," Daphne said, sitting on her couch, feeling a weight on her chest. "I just want to ask you something."
Brian asked, "What?"
Daphne pressed, "You knew Charles had fully recovered. Why did you tell me he was only halfway there?"
Brian was stunned. 'Did Charles confess?' he thought.
"And what's Charles's current situation?" Daphne asked again. "What are you hiding from me?"
"Why are you asking this now?" Brian's tone stayed calm, but he was uneasy. "Didn't I already tell you about his condition?"
"Brian Harris," Daphne said firmly.
Brian stayed composed. "Did something happen to him?"
Daphne knew she wouldn't get much over the phone, but his evasiveness made her more suspicious.
"If he loses control or gets extreme, knock him out or sedate him," Brian said quickly when she didn't respond. "Don't let his emotions get too intense."
"How do you know he'd lose control and get extreme?" Daphne countered.
From Charles's past meetings with Brian, his condition seemed stable.
Plus, Charles had matured mentally.
According to Mark, Charles and Brian had a calm conversation. So why would Brian think he'd get extreme?
She hadn't thought much about it before, but now it seemed fishy.
"I'm his doctor; I know his condition," Brian said, realizing he might've slipped up. "Trust me."
Daphne paused, then said, "I'll check on you later."
In other words, Daphne planned to hack into Brian's base to see what was up.
Brian didn't see this coming and felt uneasy. "K, you're not the type to hack into someone's system. Didn't you say that's wrong?"
"It is wrong, which is why I'm giving you a heads-up," Daphne said seriously, no joke in her tone.
Brian was momentarily stumped. This was Daphne; even if he deleted stuff now, she'd find out. What should he do?
"I admit I tweaked Charles's condition a bit," Brian said after some thought, deciding to come clean. "But I can't give you details now. I'll explain everything once I get back and stabilize him, okay?"
If it weren't for Charles, Brian wouldn't be so cautious.
Daphne's heart sank with worry. "Just tell me what aspects his condition involves."
"Don't you think he's very different from before?" Brian knew Daphne's character and decided to reveal part of the truth.
Daphne paused, suddenly thinking of something, and frowned. "You mean, a new personality?"
"It's not certain yet." Brian had already compromised. "It's complicated and hard to explain now. Just don't let his emotions get too extreme, and it should be fine."
"When will you be back?" Daphne felt this situation was beyond her expectations.
"If all goes well, I'll be in Gedser by tomorrow afternoon," Brian said, genuinely worried about any changes. His heart was no calmer than Daphne's. "I'll explain everything once I arrive."
Daphne agreed. After hanging up, she thought about her recent interactions with Charles. His personality, speech, and thoughts were vastly different from before.
Maybe Charles's deal with Brian was related to this.
Daphne remembered Brian saying he wasn't sure if Charles's current state was a new personality.
If so, it could only be research. Thinking about this, her mood grew heavier.
If this was a deal Charles made with Brian to save her, how should she face him?
Thinking about this, she suddenly wanted to know where Charles was and wanted him to regain his memory so they could have a proper talk.
Thinking of this, Daphne called Charles.
It was already dark, and Charles was not at home or in a hotel but in a rundown warehouse in the suburbs.
He glanced at the caller ID and hung up without hesitation.
To prevent Daphne from worrying, he sent a message: [Game hasn't started yet, so we can't talk rn. Eat well. Cya tmrw.]
After sending the message, he turned off his phone, put it in his pocket, and looked at the tall men in front of him.
The men trembled with fear, asking, "Mr. Lancelot, what do you want from us?"
"To talk business with you," Charles said straightforwardly.
The men didn't dare say a word. They thought, 'What business can we possibly have with Lancelot Charles?'
"As long as you do as I say, I'll give each of you $200,000," Charles said with a strong presence. Just sitting there naturally, he exerted immense pressure.
The men exchanged glances, still feeling it was unreliable.
