Chapter 471 Selling Out His Son Without Any Hesitation
In the grown-up world, when folks said "next time," "another day," or "later," it all meant one thing: there wouldn't be a next time.
Gavin threw that out there, and he figured Hazel Silverwood should've caught on.
"Didn't your mom say you were free today?" Hazel asked, playing dumb. "She even said we could chill as long as we wanted."
Gavin thought, 'Of course, she's my mom. Sold me out without a second thought.'
"She meant they had nothing lined up for me today," Gavin clarified. "But I got some personal stuff to handle."
"No worries. I'll wait till you're done." Hazel flashed a small smile.
Gavin felt stuck. He'd made it crystal clear; why wasn't Hazel getting it?
"By the way, your mom said you dig musicals," Hazel added, clearly into Gavin. "I just so happen to have two tickets for one. Let's go tomorrow."
"Thanks, but I got plans tomorrow. Can't make it. Sorry," Gavin shot her down again.
He stuck to his rule: If there was no spark, he shouldn't lead anyone on. If he kept saying no, she'd get the hint.
"Then hit me up when you're free," Hazel said smoothly, pulling out her phone and opening Facebook. "Can I get your Facebook?"
Gavin felt drained.
If Hazel were rude or had a bad temper, he'd have no problem telling her off.
But Hazel was sweet, didn't push, and was easy on the eyes.
Gavin just couldn't bring himself to be mean.
What if Hazel really didn't get the hint and was just taking his words at face value?
"Gavin?" Hazel still had her phone out.
Gavin hesitated, then reluctantly pulled out his phone.
The whole thing was a mess for him. Adding her as a friend meant staying in touch. If she asked him to a musical again, how would he say no?
Plus, constantly turning down a girl made him feel kinda bad.
Just as he was mulling this over, Gavin's phone rang. Seeing it was Daphne calling, his face lit up!
Realizing he was a bit too excited, he cleared his throat and said to Hazel, "Sorry, gotta take this."
"Okay." Hazel nodded, still gentle.
But in her pretty eyes, there was a flicker of disappointment.
Gavin didn't notice and answered Daphne's call, "What? You were in a car accident?"
Standing at the restaurant entrance, Daphne was confused. When did she say she was in a car accident?
"Are the cops and medics there?" Gavin was really laying it on thick. "Are you hurt bad?"
From where Daphne stood, she could see Gavin.
With just one look, she knew why he had called her over.
"Hang tight. I'll be right there." Gavin kept up his act, feeling thankful for Daphne's timely call. "Don't worry; everything will be fine."
After that, Gavin hung up.
He was about to leave but paused and said to Hazel, "Sorry, my sister just had a car accident. Gotta go check on her."
"Mr. Murphy." Hazel stood up, even changing how she addressed him.
Gavin hadn't caught on. "What's up?"
"Even if you don't want me to add you on Facebook, there's no need to lie like that." Hazel's grip on her phone tightened a bit, her tone genuine. "I do like you and want to get to know you better, but that doesn't mean I'll cling to you."
She'd played dumb to his refusals at first just to give herself a shot, but now it felt pointless.
If he didn't dislike her that much, why lie?
"I..." Gavin was at a loss for words.
"Not seen for a few days, and now you're cursing me?" Daphne walked over, blowing Gavin's cover without hesitation. "When did I say I was in a car accident?"
Gavin was freaking out inside. He wanted to explain but had no clue where to start.
"Hand over your phone." Daphne held out her hand.
Gavin handed it over like a kid caught red-handed, even though he was the older sibling! Why did he always cave when Daphne got serious? It made no sense!
Daphne opened Gavin's Facebook and handed it to Hazel, apologizing, "Sorry, Gavin's not the sharpest tool in the shed. He freaks out over blind dates, so he freaks out over people who come for blind dates."
"It's okay." Hazel gave off a chill vibe.
"Let's add each other as friends," Daphne suggested, thinking Hazel seemed pretty cool.
Hazel hesitated. She wanted to add him, but her pride was in the way.
Getting shot down so hard just now, adding him now would make her look desperate.
Plus, it wasn't Gavin making the move.
While Hazel hesitated, Daphne caught on, tossed Gavin's phone back to him, and handed over her own. "Sorry, wrong phone. This is my Facebook."
There was only one reason for this.
If Hazel still wanted to add Gavin, she could. If not, Daphne would use her own account to smooth things over.
Gavin was confused.
Gavin wondered if Daphne had become more social. Didn't she hate making new friends?
"If you run into any problems, you can come to me," Daphne added.
Hazel smiled sweetly, like a little princess. "Okay."
The two added each other as friends.
Gavin stood there awkwardly, feeling like a jerk for his earlier actions. He awkwardly said, "How about I add you too?"
Daphne and Hazel both looked at him at the same time.
Gavin pursed his lips, feeling uncomfortable. "I lied earlier because I didn't want a blind date, but we can be friends."
Hazel held her phone, unsure what to do for a moment.
"I have several friends who got engaged within days of meeting on blind dates and married within a month," Gavin said honestly. "That's why I don't like it."
"What about you?"
"What?"
"How do you view marriage?"
"Fate, compatibility, and love," Gavin answered straight up. "All three are a must."
If it was just love but the two weren't compatible, they would break up even if they got together.
How exactly they were compatible depended on the individuals involved.
"What's your account?" Hazel decided to add him.
