Chapter 469 No Joking

So, with just the two of them left, things felt pretty chill.

After Daphne bounced, Austin was folding Molly's clothes and chatting with Daisy. "Hey, I grabbed some clothes and stuff for Molly. You cool with that?"

"Sure."

"I got some for you too."

"No thanks," Daisy shot back, not missing a beat. She was fine with Austin buying stuff for Molly because of dad duties and all. But for herself? Nah, they were done, no need for any of that.

Austin kinda saw that coming but still felt a bit bummed.

"Molly's gonna be out for a bit. You can go do your thing," Daisy said, clearly not wanting to hang with him. "I'll holler when she wakes up."

"It's cool. I'll wait."

Daisy couldn't just kick Austin out.

Austin was itching to ask something but couldn't find the right moment.

After a bit, Daisy caught him sneaking glances.

"Spit it out," Daisy said, not in the mood for games. "What do you wanna know?"

"When I came in, I heard Benjamin talking about proposing to Daphne," Austin finally said, testing the waters. "Is that for real?"

Daisy paused, still holding the clothes. "Whether it's true or not, it's none of your business."

"I'm just curious," Austin said, dragging it out.

Daisy didn't bite. She knew Austin was fishing for Charles.

If she spilled, he'd run straight to Charles.

"What do you think of Benjamin?" Austin switched gears. "Is he someone Daphne can count on?"

"I don't know," Daisy dodged, throwing up a wall. "But he's definitely more solid than Charles."

Even though Daisy hadn't hung out much with Benjamin, she could tell from Daphne's recent glow-up that he was good for her.

Daphne was usually pretty chill, but lately, she'd been all smiles and sunshine.

"Yeah, Charles is a mess. Good thing Daphne ditched him," Austin didn't hold back. "He didn't even propose when they got together. At least Benjamin's fixing that screw-up."

Daisy didn't say more. After sorting Molly's clothes, she ignored him.

Austin knew he wasn't wanted but stuck around anyway.

He had to be a bit of a pest if he wanted Daisy back.

For the rest of the time, Daisy was in the room reading a script, while Austin, the unwanted guest, sat downstairs.

Austin glanced upstairs, then pulled out his phone to text Charles: [Can you handle this?]

Charles replied: [Shoot.]

Austin sighed and typed: [Benjamin's gonna propose to Daphne.]

Charles froze, staring at his phone.

Austin shot another text: [If he pops the question and she says yes, they're in it for the long haul. You won't get another shot.]

Dating was one thing, but a proposal? That meant Daphne was serious about marrying Benjamin.

Daphne and Benjamin weren't the type to mess around. Once they decided to tie the knot, nothing could break them up.

Charles felt a pang reading those words. He'd never proposed to Daphne, never gave her the romance she deserved.

With a mix of emotions, Charles slowly typed: [When?]

Austin replied: [The 12th. No clue on the exact time.]

Charles texted back: [Got it.]

After sending that, Charles tossed his phone aside and leaned back in his chair, lost in memories of the past.

That news messed with his head, and he barely got any work done that day.

By the end of the day, he found Mark and asked him to cover for him in the meeting on the 12th. He'd never proposed to her, but he had to be there for her at least once.

Mark could tell something was up with Charles but didn't pry. He knew better than to ask.

Time flew, and before they knew it, it was the 10th.

Benjamin had everything set up, inviting all the key people in Daphne's life—Alexander, Lydia, and Gavin.

He wanted to get Daphne's aunt Lyla there too, but she said she'd only come back for the wedding, not the proposal.

Daphne, on her end, reached out to the important folks in Benjamin's life.

She thought about inviting Henry and Anouk but found out from Benjamin when she was trying him out that he didn't want his parents there for the proposal.

When she asked why, he said, "If they see you proposing to me, they'll think I'm a loser for life."

So, she didn't invite Henry and Anouk. Benjamin was cool with Chris and the others being there.

"Are you planning to propose to me?" Benjamin caught on after a few of her questions.

"Maybe," Daphne teased. "Just trying to figure out what kind of proposal you'd like."

"Something simple."

"Huh?"

"I like a simple proposal."

"What do you mean by simple?" Daphne started second-guessing herself. Her plan wasn't super complicated, but it wasn't exactly simple either. Was she gonna mess this up?

Benjamin pulled her close and said, totally unserious, "Like, in bed."

Daphne rolled her eyes.

"Or, right now," Benjamin added.

"I'm being serious here," Daphne said, suddenly doubting her plan. If he turned her down, she'd be crushed. "No jokes."

"I'm serious too," Benjamin said, his lips curling into a small smile. He meant it.

As long as it was Daphne asking, he'd say yes anytime, anywhere.

Seeing he wasn't joking, Daphne bit her lip. "Most people want a romantic setup for a proposal. Why are you so chill about it?"

"Most people you're talking about are other girls."

"Yeah."

"Am I a girl?"
