Chapter 418 What If We Can't Get Through This

During this time, Hayden had the butler bring him some fruit and snacks.

Charles remained in a mild condition, foreign to Hayden, Marcus, and the butler.

After the butler delivered the fruit to Charles, Marcus inquired about the situation: "What's going on with Charles now?"

"He's just sitting in the yard sunbathing, not reading or playing on his phone," the butler replied honestly, given his good relationship with Marcus. "Although his mood seems about the same, something feels off."

"What's off?" Marcus asked.

"His personality," the butler said. "Mr. Lancelot used to be polite and courteous to me, but it feels different now."

Marcus sighed.

Indeed, Charles hadn't gotten over his emotional setback.

"Now, where's Hayden?" Marcus asked, his frustration clearly aimed at Hayden.

"Mr. Lancelot went shopping with Mrs. Lancelot," the butler, who was generally aware of the family's whereabouts, said. "Before leaving, he asked me to convey a message if you inquired about him."

"What is it?" Marcus asked.

"Charles needs to get through this on his own. No amount of words from others will help," the butler recounted.

Marcus was infuriated and responded sharply, "Clearly, he's the one who's useless, using that as an excuse."

The butler wisely chose not to respond.

In the following days, Charles joined them for meals and conversations, appearing no different from before.

But those who knew him well could tell something was off. Marcus and the others, having been through similar experiences, understood that this was a sign of him suppressing his feelings.

After three or four days, Rex, who had been out, returned.

Though Rex often teased Charles, he was genuinely concerned when Charles seemed off.

On the evening of the 20th, the family gathered for dinner.

Charles seemed as normal as ever, eating without any noticeable difference.

Marcus, Hayden, and Laura had conspired, and when Rex was eating voraciously, they exchanged a look.

Laura promptly grasped the situation, taking a bite before putting down her utensils and looking at Charles. In her usual gentle manner, she said, "Charles, I have something to ask you."

"Go ahead," Charles said and paused his eating.

"Do you know any good single women around?" Laura asked.

Charles paused, his eyes immediately turning to Hayden.

'Wasn't it agreed that they wouldn't introduce anyone to him for a while? What's this about?' Charles thought to himself.

"If you do, introduce them to Rex," Laura quickly clarified to avoid misunderstanding. "He's not getting any younger; it's time for him to settle down."

Rex paused his eating, then quickly said, "I have a girlfriend already. No need for introductions."

"Since when?" Hayden asked.

"How come we didn't know?" Laura asked.

"Whose daughter is she?" Marcus asked.

Only Charles, with one look, knew Rex was lying.

To avoid future trouble, Charles unhesitatingly exposed Rex's lie. "He's lying to you."

"I'm not lying. It's true. We just started dating a week ago," Rex said quickly, his expression more serious than usual. "If you don't believe me, I'll bring her home in a few days."

"Do I need to show your schedule to Mom and Dad?" Charles continued to expose him.

Rex was on the verge of a breakdown, thinking, 'What's wrong with Charles? I used to cover for him, but now he's exposing me.'

Rex desperately gave Charles a look, hoping he would save him from this mess.

But unfortunately, Charles had no intention of helping him.

"I really do have a girlfriend," Rex emphasized again, trying to make his words more believable. He even made up a story. "We met online, and just confirmed our relationship last week. We haven't had a chance to meet yet."

Everyone gave him a look that clearly showed they didn't believe him.

After dinner, Rex went to chat with Charles.

Hayden and Laura didn't disturb them. They wanted to find a suitable time to talk to Charles together, but they knew now wasn't the right moment.

Rex walked with Charles in the backyard, complaining of his odd behavior, to which Charles listened silently.

At first, they talked about Rex's issues.

Later, Rex started talking about Charles. "Charles, do you regret not treating Daphne well back then?"

"Yes," Charles replied.

Not only regret, but he also wished he could go back and make amends.

"Mom and Dad are really worried about you. They didn't want you to brood alone, so they asked me to come back and talk to you," Rex said, walking beside him with a light tone. "But I don't think it's necessary."

Charles glanced at him.

Rex smiled warmly and said, "You're the most amazing person in the world. No matter what difficulties you face, you'll get through them."

"What if I can't?" Charles argued.

"You will. You definitely will," Rex said firmly.

Charles didn't respond.

He could get through it, but the things he lost would become lifelong regrets, and the emptiness in his heart would never be filled.

"Charles," Rex called softly.

"Yes?" Charles replied.

"Get out more when you have time," Rex suggested. Despite claiming not to worry, he hoped Charles would recover soon. "And don't let emotions cloud your judgment in future relationships. Use your brain."

Rex knew a bit about what had happened back then. With Charles' intelligence, those problems shouldn't have occurred. It could only be said that emotions made people lose their rationality, and feelings overwhelmed reason.

"And don't close off your heart," Rex said the most important thing. "If you do, others can't get in, and you can't get out."

Rex regretted that Daphne and Charles didn't end up together.

If possible, he hoped more than anyone that they could be together forever. However, life was full of regrets.

Daphne had Benjamin now, and Charles should move forward, too.

Charles had no intention of taking his advice. "Since you understand so well, bring your girlfriend home before the end of the year. If you don't find one, I'll arrange blind dates for you."

Rex thought, 'So all the nice things I said are in vain?'

Charles deliberately avoided his gaze and added, "This isn't just my idea. It's also Mom, Dad, and Grandpa's."

"Charles!" Rex called angrily.

"Calling me won't help," Charles said indifferently.

Rex started making things up to avoid blind dates. "I like men. How can I bring a girlfriend home? It wouldn't be fair to the girl!"
