Chapter 428 I'll Keep an Eye on Her for You
Benjamin shot her a quick look.
Was she just asking, or was she hinting she had doubts about last night?
"Given how you were last night, it doesn't seem likely," Daphne said, all serious.
Benjamin chuckled. Since they got back together, Daphne had doubted him more times than he could count.
"We can find a time to test it out," he said slowly, with a bit of a teasing tone. "Don't back out then."
Knowing she couldn't win this one, Daphne just kept eating her breakfast.
It wasn't until she got to the office that she replied to Emma's message.
"Just let us know when you plan to propose. We promise to be there," Emma said over the phone.
"Don't tell Evan," Daphne warned, thinking Evan was a bit of a blabbermouth. "Coordinate with Kevin instead."
Evan was tight with Benjamin.
If Evan knew she was planning to propose, he'd definitely spill the beans, ruining the surprise.
Kevin, on the other hand, was more on Daphne's side.
Emma got it. "No problem."
"Cool," Daphne replied, feeling satisfied.
"Daphne," Emma suddenly called out.
"Yeah?" Daphne asked.
"How far have you two gotten?" Emma asked.
"Huh?" Daphne was thrown off; the topic changed too fast.
"How far have you and Benjamin gone?" Emma asked, curious. "Don't tell me you haven't done anything yet."
Emma was shocked by her silence. "Really, nothing?"
"We've kissed," Daphne admitted.
"That's it?" Emma asked, stunned.
"That's it," Daphne said, like it was no big deal.
"You should find a time to test him out. If there's an issue, better to know early," Emma said seriously. "As someone who's been single for thirty years, if he's not into dating, there must be a problem!"
Daphne coughed lightly and replied, "He's fine."
Even though they hadn't gone all the way, there were times she could definitely feel his body's reaction while kissing.
Daphne was sure Benjamin was perfectly healthy.
"You won't know until you try," Emma said, hinting at something.
"Aren't you looking for a boyfriend? How about considering Evan or Kevin?" Daphne changed the subject, not wanting to talk about it anymore. "One's a bit bossy, the other's super chill. One of them's gotta be your type."
"No way," Emma shot down the idea immediately. If she liked either of them, she would've made a move ages ago and wouldn't need a nudge.
After chatting for a bit, they hung up.
Daphne put down her phone and got back to work.
Feelings came in all shapes and sizes. Some were fiery, some were mellow.
Daphne and Benjamin were a mix of both. Maybe because they'd known each other forever and been through so much together, being a couple didn't feel all that different.
They'd always been teammates who could trust each other with their lives.
If there was any change, it was that they were more possessive and wanted to treat each other better.
Other than that, not much had changed.
But Emma's words did make her think.
Benjamin had been single for thirty years, and she couldn't let him wait forever. Once the proposal went through, she'd make sure they took the next step.
If Benjamin knew what she was thinking, he'd be over the moon and eagerly anticipating how she'd make her move.
But, sadly, he had no clue.
In the days that followed, they went about their usual routines. One day, Daphne noticed him burning the midnight oil on tasks for the Reynolds Group and realized he was juggling two jobs just to be with her every day.
Daphne didn't want him to be so worn out and said, "Starting next Monday, you should go back to work at the Reynolds Group. Jesse can handle things at HorizonTech Group."
HorizonTech Group had hit a stable phase and didn't need to push for more business right now. Jesse could manage it solo.
Benjamin shook his head. He was working overtime because Henry had dumped all the work on him.
Last time at home, while Daphne and Anouk were chatting inside, Henry had pulled Benjamin aside and played the pity card, talking about how tough things were for him. He mentioned that even though Benjamin was back, he still couldn't travel the world with Anouk. He even said he wished for a son who cared about him.
Benjamin didn't call Henry out and agreed to take over the Reynolds Group's business, letting him and Anouk travel.
Unexpectedly, after agreeing, Henry asked him to keep it from Anouk.
It was then that Benjamin learned Henry had promised Anouk to manage the Reynolds Group until their kid started kindergarten.
"It's just a busy few days, at most a week." Benjamin just wanted to be with her.
The Reynolds Group didn't have much for him to handle, so taking over later would be a breeze. But if he agreed to go there now, it would be tough to return to HorizonTech Group later.
"Going back is better," Daphne reasoned, making a lot of sense. "The Reynolds Group and HorizonTech Group are in completely different fields. If you stay here, people might gossip."
Despite being the heir to the Reynolds Group, Benjamin worked at HorizonTech Group every day.
It would give the Reynolds Group and outsiders the impression that he preferred tech and wasn't loyal to the family business, which could potentially hurt the Reynolds Group.
"Seems like you really want to get rid of me?" Benjamin teased.
"I don't, just giving you a reasonable analysis," Daphne said.
She had her own motives. If Benjamin stayed, they'd be together almost all the time, making it hard for her to secretly plan the proposal. Any small move could be easily noticed. But if Benjamin went back to the Reynolds Group, she'd have plenty of time to prepare.
Normally, Benjamin wouldn't leave.
But he was thinking the same as Daphne, about the proposal.
"The Reynolds Group is far from here," Benjamin said. He had already made up his mind to go, but he wanted to appear reluctant. "If I go there, I won't be able to see you every day."
"No problem," Daphne answered decisively.
She could separate work from feelings.
"Just because you're fine doesn't mean I am," Benjamin said, leaning his head on one hand and twirling a pen with the other. "What if my hard-won girlfriend slips away?"
"I'll keep an eye on her for you," Daphne thought for a moment and replied.
Benjamin pulled her onto his lap, wrapped his arms around her slender waist, and asked lazily and seductively, "How will you do that?"
