Chapter 380 Protect Her Well
"He doesn't want to run the company anymore," Lydia blurted out, throwing Gavin under the bus. "He told Dad to hand it over to you this year. Dad and Grandpa are on board, and he's even run it by the shareholders."
Gavin sighed, "I've been handling it for years. Don't I deserve some freedom?"
"No," Daphne shot back.
Daphne expected Alexander's support, but Sean always doubted her abilities. How could he agree to let her take over the Murphy Group?
"Daphne," Gavin said, looking pitiful, a far cry from his usual office demeanor.
Gavin thought, 'I just want to relax and enjoy life, not work!'
"If you really don't want to manage it, hire a CEO," Daphne suggested, setting a trap. "Let the secretarial department handle daily stuff, and you can make the big decisions."
"No way," Gavin refused immediately.
The Murphy Group was Daphne's baby; he couldn't just hand it over to someone else.
Seeing Gavin's reluctance, Daphne softened. He was like a brother to her, always looking out for her and Lydia.
"I'll have Jesse take over your position," Daphne decided. She had already discussed it with Gavin, Lydia, and Alexander. "With him around, you won't have to worry."
"No way, what about you?" Gavin didn't want Daphne to be overworked. "Let me think about it."
As they continued eating, Gavin's eyes landed on Benjamin.
"How about letting Benjamin manage it?" Gavin suggested, already scheming. "I'll train him to be a great boss."
Benjamin stayed quiet, knowing Daphne would speak up for him.
As expected, Daphne refused, "Benjamin has his own family business. Don't get any ideas."
"What family business? I'll handle it for him," Gavin insisted. "I promise I'll do a good job."
Daphne paused, "Are you sure?"
"Of course, what's there to worry about?" Gavin didn't realize the family business was in antiques, something he knew little about.
Daphne looked at Benjamin for his opinion. He shrugged, "I'm fine with it."
"Then report to the Reynolds Group in a few days," Daphne said calmly. "I'll have Benjamin inform his family."
Gavin was confused. 'The Reynolds Group? The low-profile one I know?'
"What's wrong?" Daphne asked when Gavin didn't respond.
"The wine's here; I'll get it," Gavin said, glancing at his ringing phone and quickly changing the subject. "We'll talk about this later; no rush."
Gavin didn't specify a time, and neither did Daphne or the others.
When the wine arrived, Gavin started drinking with Benjamin. Daphne and Lydia left them alone.
Just like last time, Gavin tried to get some info, but as they drank, he got a bit fuzzy.
At first, they chatted normally, but then Gavin, drunk, started threatening Benjamin.
"Daphne is our family's treasure, my most precious treasure," Gavin slurred, putting a hand on Benjamin's shoulder. "If you don't treat her well, I won't let you off."
Benjamin, completely sober, looked at Daphne sitting on the sofa with Lydia, his eyes full of affection.
After a while, Benjamin replied, "She's my most precious treasure too."
For the rest of his life, he would protect her well.
"Hey, Gavin," Benjamin said, opening his phone's recording app, setting a trap.
"Do you want Daphne to suffer?" Benjamin asked.
Gavin shook his head slowly. "No."
"Are you willing to let her be tired?" Benjamin continued.
Gavin still said, "No."
"Then how about you keep managing the Murphy Group?" Benjamin's tone was calm.
Gavin blurted out, "Okay!"
Satisfied, Benjamin put away his phone and stopped drinking with him.
Hearing no more noise, Daphne glanced over and walked up.
"Let him stay with me," Daphne said, knowing Gavin well. "When he wakes up, he'll probably think he's a movie character and cause trouble."
"It's fine," Benjamin replied. "Let him sleep here."
Since he might cause trouble, it was better not to let Daphne worry.
Daphne hesitated.
Benjamin helped Gavin up and took him to the bedroom to rest.
Seeing Gavin completely drunk, Daphne was still a bit worried. Just as she was about to speak, Benjamin called her, "Daphne."
"Yeah?" she replied.
"I'm your boyfriend," Benjamin emphasized for the umpteenth time.
"I know," Daphne nodded.
"You can rely on me. Don't worry about everything," Benjamin said, gently pinching her cheek. "Otherwise, it makes me look useless as a boyfriend."
Daphne paused, thinking, 'How does it make him useless?'
"You don't have to do everything yourself," Benjamin said in a lazy, deep voice, releasing her face. "You're not alone; you have me."
Daphne pursed her lips. She was used to handling things herself.
"I want to be someone you can rely on," Benjamin said slowly.
Daphne's eyes met his, seeing herself reflected in them. She finally spoke, "I'll try."
"Make good use of your boyfriend," Benjamin said, rubbing her head. "It's good for nurturing feelings."
Daphne felt a bit uncomfortable.
Benjamin smiled faintly. When he first met Daphne, she was more lively and talkative.
She had become like this because of her past relationship. People who had been hurt tended to hide their true selves.
He wasn't in a hurry. One day, she would know she was truly loved.
Lying in bed, Gavin felt his head spinning. In a daze, he opened his eyes and looked around.
