Chapter 35 Everyone Wants to Step on Them
Last time at the hospital, only a brief explanation was given. He wanted to know all the details, about what had happened in the past two years.
"There's nothing much to say, it's just a story of a substitute." Daphne's emotions remained calm, and now she could speak about the past events with composure. "The game is over now; everyone goes their separate ways."
Mr. Murphy was taken aback. "Why... didn't you tell me?"
"I'm not a child, I can handle these things," Daphne replied. "Besides, he has a nice face."
Mr. Murphy didn't feel any relief because of these words. On the contrary, he felt even more upset. "Daffy!"
"If there's nothing else to discuss, then let's stop here." Daphne didn't want to say more. "I didn't sleep well last night; I need to catch up on sleep."
"There's one more thing..."
"What is it?"
"Her daughter works at the Murphy Group. If you go, there's a high chance you'll run into her." Mr. Murphy said this without daring to look into Daphne's eyes, not even having the courage to meet her gaze.
She knew who she was referring to. Mr. Murphy was also feeling uneasy. "If you don't like it, I'll have my secretary reassign her."
"Whatever." Daphne had no interest in this matter whatsoever.
Mr. Murphy became even more uncertain. He didn't dare to disturb Daphne too much, afraid of truly annoying her.
Daphne slept throughout the entire morning. It wasn't until three or four in the afternoon that she finally woke up. Just as she was about to check the time, she noticed a text message on her phone.
[Miss Murphy, can you help me get in touch with Charles? I have something important to discuss with him. - Kayla.]
“Are mistresses nowadays this audacious?” Daphne wondered. “Instead of finding someone directly, they come to the original spouse.”
After crossing out the message, she got up and went about her own business. She wasn't a saint, so she couldn't possibly help convey messages between Charles and his mistress.
Moreover, there was definitely something fishy about this message.
With so many people in the Lancelot Group who could be contacted, it was peculiar that they chose to send the message to her, the person whom they least favored. It all seemed suspicious no matter how she looked at it.
With a buzz, Her phone vibrated intensely. She picked it up and saw that it was the same number that had sent her the text message earlier. In other words, it was a call from Kayla. She pressed the answer button and, just in case, opted to record the call.
As soon as the call connected, a gentle and slightly pained voice came through from the other side. "Is this Miss Murphy? I'm Kayla. Could you please pass the phone to Charles? I have something urgent to discuss with him."
"No." Daphne replied.
"Miss Murphy, I really have something very important!" Kayla continued with the same tone as before. "Please, I'm begging you."
"You have no shame," Daphne responded, wondering why Kayla always had a good attitude towards her. "Do you think it's appropriate for me to help you contact Charles?" Kayla remained silent.
Daphne added one last sentence, "It's better for people to have some dignity, don't you think?"
"Miss Murphy..." Without hesitation, Daphne hung up the phone. She also decided to block and delete this number. She really didn't want to receive any more calls from her.
Honestly, she really couldn't understand Kayla's way of thinking.
"Miss Murphy, please, I'm really desperate to see Charles. He hasn't contacted me or come to see me because of the agreement between you two, but now I really need him." Daphne looked at the messages from the new number, her expression becoming darker.
This was truly outrageous. "You wouldn't want to see double casualties, would you?"
"Miss Murphy, I'm pregnant with Charles' child!" Kayla sent one message after another, each one delivering shocking news.
Daphne didn't want to engage, but Kayla had become shameless to a certain extent: "Kayla, do you think it's worth declaring to the world that you're pregnant with a married man's child?"
Daphne added, "If you bother me again, I don't mind exposing your affair online, bringing your clandestine relationship to light."
After sending this message, Kayla no longer bombarded her with calls or texts. Regarding the words she had said, Daphne remained observant. Despite Charles being a scumbag, he always upheld his promises.
More importantly, Kayla had only come back less than a month ago, so how could she be pregnant already? Thinking about all of this, she took screenshots of the messages Kayla sent and posted them on her social media.
Let everyone see. As soon as she posted this update, someone commented.
lab rat: "Fuck! I've never seen someone so arrogant before."
Lydia: "Is this about that crush?"
Daphne had forgotten to block her family.
Laura: "@Charles, look at the mess you've made! The mistress has come to Daphne's place to show off!"
Charles had just finished dealing with some documents. Upon hearing the notification, he frowned slightly and grabbed his phone to check. When he saw the post Daphne made on social media, a barely noticeable furrow formed on his forehead.
Almost instantly, he dialed a number on his phone. Daphne saw that it was him calling and initially didn't want to answer, but considering Kayla's situation, she picked up the phone and said, "Hello."
"In your social media post; what does the screenshot mean?" Charles asked with a hint of annoyance.
"Having a child?" Daphne chuckled and replied, "Don't you understand the meaning yourself?"
"Explain clearly."
"It was sent to me by your crush," Daphne said without hiding anything. She wanted to see how he would explain, "I'm actually curious about how this child came to be."
"I don't know."
"Oh."
"Send me your address, I'll come over and use your phone to contact her and find out the situation," Charles wanted to know what exactly had happened more than Daphne. "I will give you a satisfactory explanation."
Daphne sent him the location of a café. Charles had originally planned to hang up and go, but his mother called and as soon as he answered, he was scolded, quite severely. Charles did not dare to argue back, he could only let her berate him.
In the end, she asked a crucial question, "Who is the person sending messages to Daphne? Did you divorce Daphne because of her?"
"I have something to discuss with Daphne, I'll tell you when I come back," Charles changed the subject and didn't answer her question right away. He was well aware that if his mother found out about this, she would definitely be very angry. She liked Daphne so much, treating her as her own daughter.
"You better handle this matter properly for me," Laura started getting angry and didn't have a good impression of the person sending messages to Daphne. "If you divorced Daphne to marry this woman, I won't agree."
